I realize you talked about it quite a bit on the last show, but I'd still like to hear your thoughts after you've had it for a week or two. I *seriously* want one, but at the same time that's quite a chunk of pocket change and it doesn't even come with a few books.

It could be a perfect accessory for my academic wife ... except it screws with the formatting of PDF files, and that can be kinda important to her. It COULD get rid of a filing cabinet's worth of journal articles. Pity. Maybe Kindle 3.

I saw one of these on the subway. I got to admit it was lookin' pretty sweet. But, not $350 sweet. Sorry Veronica. :(

Why are you apologizing to me? Who am I, Amazon? ;)

Pretty interesting news that Amazon has bought Stanza's developers. Big user base now, I just hope they don't cut features.

WHEN ARE WE GETTING IT ON THIS SIDE OF THE ATLANTIC?

I am limited to the Sony PRS-505 (which actually does a good job with PDF's, which I read a lot of. And calibre (http://calibre.kovidgoyal.net/) syncs feeds automatically). We don't even get the PRS-700 over here.

What gives? Home of printing on this continent ya know. We're more lite... litera...litilery...you know, that being able to read thing, over here.

Oh, I just didn't want you to think I was invalidating your purchasing decision.

I think Amazon is looking into it but because it runs on a CDMA network in the US, it would require a change in hardware and finding a cell phone carrier to give them what they need. I'm pretty sure it isn't even available in Canada because of this.

Don't worry though. I'm sure Amazon will figure out some way to bring it to everyone else.

Already done it. The Kindle 2 is highly modular (http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/First-Look/Kindle-2/624/1), and going from a CDMA modem to a GSM modem would require no more than plugging in a different card and programming in different drivers.

But is the Kindle better than the Sony E-Reader. Ok, it has wireless but other than that, is it really worth it?

It is when my main computer is a Mac, which the Sony e-Reader doesn't work with!

Anyhow, the Kindle 2 is amazing so far. Definitely glad I went for it.

The Sony ones have more space and better .PDF support. The wireless isn't an issue for me. I'm still going Sony at this point because of space. I need to be able to read/access my data without having to go to a PC every little while. Being able to convert .pdf manuals over without having to deal with Amazon is biggie for my uses.

As I mentioned, calibre works - and is what I use across the board (Win/Mac, because as is very usual for Sony, i.e. that software seems to be beyond them, that the shipping software doesn't even load on Vista 64 ). It has scheduled feed sync / upload (provided of course the device is connected), and book management. There is even a Linux edition for computoman and everyone else using 10-year-old PC's :p
