I'm relatively new to comics and I'm looking for a good series that I can jump on to because at the minute I'm not reading a lot of books. I'm mainly looking for a Marvel/DC series because I'm not reading any yet.
These are the titles I'm reading:
Hellboy
BPRD
Invincible
Astounding Wolf-Man
see not a lot at all, but I am getting some old limited series like Y: The Last Man, Preacher etc.

Well what are you interested from the big two? Be more specific, what catches your eye?

Well I was thinking about jumping on to Uncanny X-Men seeing as Matt Fraction is quite new on the title.
And Blackest Night catches my eye but it seems like a lot of it has already been delved into so I don't know if it's good to jump on now so I was wondering if there's anywhere that I could jump on and get caught up.

Those are some great books you read. You might be disappointed in what Marvel or DC has to offer.

I'm jumping onto Blackest Night with the #0 issue.
I have no GL knowledge or anything but I'm doing it.
On the vertigo front, you can pick up Unknown Soldier #7 as it's a jumping on point (and you can get the first trade when it comes out for issues 1-6).
You can also pick up Madame Xanadu #11 this month (a trade of #1-10 is scheduled for july I believe).
All those Batman books in June (Batman and Robin, Batman, Rd Robin, Gotham City Sirens, Streets of Gotham) should all be excellent jumping on points.

I usually hear most praise about independent books there's usually just a lot of hype over Marvel and DC then from what I hear a lot of let-down, mainly with events but if what I hear about Geoff Johns writing skill is true then Blackest Night should be an awesome event.

I may aswell jump on with #0 then, how can that not be a jumping on point with a title like that.
I'll look into those Vertigo books and some of the Batman books.
Thanks :D
Geoff Johns writes GL so that people who have never read can pick up what's going on quickly. Miyamoto mentioned the Bat titles, which are all revamping in June, so those should be good.
Pick up Flash: Rebirth #1. It's new reader friendly and a great book. If you read this series and dig it, the ramifications of it will be played out in the Flash proper.
Really, any Marvel book is a good jumping on point because Marvel starts every issue with a recap page that fills you in on what you need to know.
Honestly, though, just buy something you're interested and start reading it. The guys encourage people to do it all the time, and it's true. You can figure stuff out or use these forums or Wiki if you're confused. Don't let continuity scare you away from titles. I came back to comics a few years ago after not buying them for many, many years, and it's pretty easy to get up to speed.

I would recommend getting the Johns GL trades to get the full picture going into Blackest Night. Plus those books are just awesome reads. As far as X Men I think you can just pick up the most recent issue and go.

Get Flash rebirth number one. Then, buy the Sinestro Corps war trade or HC's or w.e, and jump on for blackest night. Oh, also, pick up GL: Secret origin. If you are interested in batman, read battle for the cowl, and you will be all caught up.

Sinestro Corps War was how I jumped onto the Green Lantern bandwagon, it seems to be a good start for all the Blackest Night stuff.
Why not try Guardians of the Galaxy? Its one of Marvel's sci-fi action series that debuted in the wake of Annihilation: Conquest. However, I have read neither that or the original Annihilation, and I love it!

I think half of the praise of indy books over Marvel/DC books is just so people can feel elitist and superior, honestly. There is a ton of great stuff going on at the Big Two. I'd say grab Flash: rebirth #1 while you can. I'm also jumping on the Bat family of books in June. Spider-Man right now has been the best the title has been in my lifetime and the "previously on" page 1 gets you up to speed pretty well. Dan Slott's Mighty Avengers run has just started and has been old school 80s Marvel fun with a modern twist. There are way more, but I don't want to give you a hundred suggestions, just a few to give you a glimpse of what's out there.

Pick up Blackest night #0.
and if you are looking just for a fun out of continuity book I recommend Mike Green Superman/Batman. VERY FUN book. Right now it has only been like 2-4 issue arcs. I really do recommend it. Issue 60 would be a good jumping on point.

Hey!
I do read my DC and Marvel books (well to be honest, I could be reading more Marvel stuff but someone is sending me a shitload of Marvel issues so we'll see). But when I do look at my favorite books it is very indy:
Invincible
Walking Dead
Criminal
Scott Pilgrim
and just a ton of stuff over at Image and the non-Universe imprints at the big two. I have some mainstream stuff (I'm totally enjoying Geoff Johns right now) too!

I'm not saying there isn't a lot of indy stuff out there that is terrific, if not better than what the "big two" are doing. I'm saying that a lot of people automatically dismiss stuff BECAUSE it is published by Marvel or DC. There are a ton of books that are not Marvel/DC that I love. I think Invincible is the best super-hero comic of the last decade. The sci-fi stuff Warren Ellis is doing over at Avatar that i just read (the first Anna Mercury trade and the first two issues of Ignition City) were better than almost anything I have read at DC or Marvel in months.
I'm just saying there are a lot of people who need to feel superior to other people, and they do so by trashing the mainstream. I know a lot of people who always refuse to watch summer blockbuster movies and watch exclusively small, indy films. Now, I love indy film, but that doesn't mean I can't also love Iron Man.
I just think people should be open minded about what they chose to watch, read, liste to. if you limit yourself to one genre, or one publisher, or whatever, you are depriving yourself of a ton of quality material.
Just because I'm really enjoying things like Mouse Guard or RASL or Glamourpuss, doesn't mean i have to stop reading Spider-Man or Fantastic Four or whatever.

But see I think that number of people who read ONLY Marvel/DC greatly outnumbers the "dismissers."
That's why I made that comment on that bloke's presumed pulls a few weeks ago. He had like 30 items, he was a fresh reader, and it was all Marvel/DC.

Amen to that.

I think this is more because people who are just getting into comics don't realize there are things that AREN'T Marvel or DC than a kind of "this is small time so it must not be good" attitude. Back when i was a kid just starting out reading comics, i had no idea there were other publishers out there. I just knew Marvel and DC. If I had know there was other stuff out there, I would have given it a shot much earlier.

The measure that I always go by is that if I like the look of a book then I'll give it a try. It really wont take long to get up to spead with charachter and event. Just go for it, trust your instincts.

I picked up Blackest Night #0 on FCBD and I'm not sure if that'd be enough to get me into and through Darkest Night. So I'm wondering if i should get the Rebirth and Sinestro Corps. War trades to be up to speed with Blackest Night or if I'd be alright without them.

Rebirth and Sinestro Corps were both excellent. It wouldn't do you any harm to picking them up. GL has been pretty good for a while now. Let's hope that the Flash ends up the same way.

I also picked up #0 and feel the same way so I'm going to get them trades.
If you look on the iFanboy main page, Josh has posted an article about what to read in order to really enjoy Blackest Night.
