What do you guys think about that?

I can see it working, it could actually work pretty well. I just hope they capture the jerk part of Tony Stark's character.

Yeah I think it was a good choice. He's a good actor just depends on the direction really.

pff, and the script! he's a convincing alcoholic, that's for damn sure. also, though, i don't like it too much. he seems right for the part in a lot of ways except for him being a superhero. he always has this weird, lost, delusional look on his face that makes him seem like he just did something wrong. i think tony stark has some non douche in him eventually, although i'm not so sure about that b/c of civil war, but i don't see downey as being a moral compass for anything. sure he learns his lessons, but the look on his face at all times bothers me (like collin farrel's) only that unlike collin farrel, he doesn't look confused, but like that one uncle who always hugged your little brothers and sisters for slightly too long.

i just heard... his acting is good, but, he doesn't really look like tony stark...
but, as always the thing that counts is the acting.

I think it's a pleasantly unexpected casting choice. Good for Favreau.

I like it, im not sure what I like about it but I like it. But I dont beleive they are dealing with the alcoholism in this movie, they are going to set it up for a sequel I guess. But atleast hes starting with the Gray suit!

I love Robert Downey Jr.! He'll bring a very interesting, excentric quality to any superhero alter-ego, plus he's sexy as all get out. Great choice.

I think, as Tony Stark, he will be awesome. I have always loved the work that Downey Jr. does and think he can bring a great amount of emotion and depth to the character. However, I don't know how well he will be able to pull off the physical aspect of Iron Man. It may just be me, but I don't know how well he will be able to pull that off. Still, I think it is an excellent casting choice, and one of the better comic book movie castings made in a while.

It's a daring choice and it could work out very well. He is a great actor. I do agree that he doesn't really look the part, but neither does Tobey McGuire look like Peter Parker. I do think Downey Jr. will be engaging in the bits about Tony's alcoholism, which to my understanding will not be a part of this movie. But if they do decide to go that route in future movies he will do that part of the character very well. Hopefully they at least tease to Tony's excessive drinking in the first movie.

I still think George Clooney should be Iron Man.

I think he'll do well. One, from what I've read he's into yoga..good core strengthening. He's done physical comedy, which means he knows how to work is body in an elemental sense. He's got a nice build, not too big so once he gets that training with some weights to appropriately buff up....

...and he's been in jail where he's had to fight :)

It's going to be interesting, but I think he can manage.

Now, knowing very little about Tony Stark...which actor do you think looks most like him?

Hmm I would have to say, based only on looks, that he almost looks like Ben Affleck. I may sound insane, but look here and tell me that doesn't look like Affleck with a goatee http://www.electricferret.com/battle/contenders/tonystark.jpg .

But about Downey Jr., I didn't know he was into yoga and such. That definately makes me feel a lot better about the physical aspects of Iron Man. BTW what suit design are they going for? Certainly they aren't going to go for the first suit? *prays for an ultimates esque version*

We had a discussion about this on the IRC channel and I have to say that I think downy is the wrong guy for the part. Sure Tony stark has a dark alcoholic side, but he was a pillar of a man before that. Downy has always been broken and has always acted the part of a broken man. I would think any first Iron Man movie would explore the alcoholism and if it does I don't think that Downy has the chops to be the guy that Stark was before the booze.

I was watching one of the late night shows and they had Favreau on. He was saying how robert Downey Jr. was going to be iron man.
I just can not picture him with the little tonny stark mustache.

I was reading and it sounds like Jim Rhodes may play War Machine. That would be cool I always like War Machine more.

And there going to have Famke Janssen from xmen maybe in it also

what do you think of the casting ??

i think he will do a good job. i don't think you need to look like the comic book version to be good in the role...michael keaton prooved that in '89.

just having him as the role suggests it will be more serious than it could be.

...and yet, I am still uneasy with the choice, despite liking Robert Downey, Jr.

I'm not a big Iron Man fan to begin with, although I liked him a lot as a kid before I figured out Tony Stark is an asshole. heh. Civil War has only strengthened my dislike for Stark.

However, as with all movie adaptions, I go in with as clean a slate as I can muster.
