so I ran into someone who backed up their hard drive with a disk cloning software. Doesn't remember what it was. Created about 10 large files with *.dig file extension. Naturally the hard drive is now toast.

Any thoughts on what was used?

Was this done with a Windows computer?

yep, windows.

not sure of the circumstances, but the laptop was thrown from the window of a car on the highway. no chance of recovering. platters are in many pieces as are the rest of the laptop.

2 minutes of Googling
- .dig file format belongs to DrvImagerXPFile
- Drive Imager XP 2.2 can be downloaded from here (http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Back-Up-and-Recovery/DrvImagerXP.shtml)

OK, now we want the story. Why did your gf/bf throw your laptop out the window of a car??

No more help until we get the full details.

This reminds me of the story where someone wanted to help fix a roomate's computer without him knowing it. It is beginning to smell like a fish market.
