So I just saw it and after it read alot of the reviews online, including IGN's and JoBlo's and Roger Ebert's, and including a few from Rotten Tomatoes. All were pretty positive (except for Ebert's, yet again) yet they mentioned all the same thing: That this film is severely dumbed down for the public audience. I guess since most of the episodes are light on action and more heavy with pseduo-science related plots and themes, the reviewers thought that the fact that this movie was so action heavy detracted from the film. They couldnt be more wrong though.
Let's do two quick comparisons: What do Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country have in common? They're fun movies which not only have plenty of action, but feature light hearted sci-fi themes that don't take themselves seriously. And what do Search For Spock, The Voyage Home and The Final Frontier have in common? Mostly unexciting action scenes and instead decided to focus on some faux-scientific and ham-handed preachy plots.
Its obvious that the dialog and pseudo-science driven plots of the TV series didn't translate well to the movies, and popcorn flick style movies like Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country are much more enjoyable. I'm glad the new movie followed in the footsteps of those two movies, and that it never took itself too seriously and was really fun!
Voyage Home was awesome! Well mainly just for it being full of humour, the "Oh shit we need extinct humpback whales let's travel through time to get them, wha wha environment" was ridiculous

I remember watching that when I was like 5....and the only thought came to mind was 'What is going on here? I know I'm a kid but this doesnt make sense at all!'

Just got back from seeing this. It was fantastic!
Everything I want a Star Trek film to be. The distinct break from mainline continuity is a genius move. It allows them to generate new and modern scripts using the ST archetypes legitimately within the franchise.
Pacing was excellent, dialogue was snappy, cinematography was gorgeous (art deco never looked so good) and direction was tight as fuck.
Every set piece forwarded the plot and moved along with a lot excitement and velocity. The callbacks to every era of Star Trek were incredible. A lot is there for the long time Trek fan. But the film doesn't use that as a plot device or get bogged down in nostalgia.
My girlfriend has never seen Star Trek in any incarnation. She loved it and was laughing and cheering the whole time.
The audience we saw it with were great!
Every one was excited to see it. The theater was buzzing. With the audience bursting into laughter or cheering loudly at the spectacular action sequences.
At the end we were all cheering, clapping and remarking how great the movie was. About 70% of the audience stood through the whole credit sequence and all we heard were people around us talking about this scene or that.
Just about as perfect as Star Trek has ever been. A rollickin' sci-fi pulp adventure.

It goes to show that there really wasn't much wrong with this movie, and that you have to be some sort of super pricky Star Trek fanboy-freak to really hate it

Though I loved the movie, Ebert levels some legitimate criticisms. However, as with every work of art, one should experience the art firsthand before debating the merits of the criticism of that work. It works best for me to watch the film first and then examine critiques.

I've just seen Trek and it really surprised me, in a good way. I liked everything about it. The casting, story, pacing, humour, everything. A really great movie. And I love the retcon aspect to the story. This could really work as the next phase of the franchise if it's handled properly.
God, lets hope so.

it was definetely the best Star Trek movie so far... but for me that's not saying much.
It still had a couple of not so serious flaws.
I say they're not so serious because I understand why they're their.
1. the young russian kid... he was just annoying and not funny.
i understand why he is what he is... it was meant to be funny. I just didn't find it to be that. whatever the reason it was just a couple of short scenes and I can live with it.
2. Underused Eric Bana and Clifton Jones Jr.
What the hell? It was like an episode of a tv show where they just have cameos or they're just some actors.
I'm more displeased with the use of Eric Bana because we know the guy can act. But I also like Jones and he always delivers on playing the asshole/bad guy.
I can understand though that maybe they wanted to not play them as entirely evil people because of the reasoning behind their actions but either way they're just underused and it's dissapointing.
There's probably a couple of other things but it all just comes down to the fact that there was a bunch of characters and things that seemed interesting but weren't really delved into. I'm guessing it was just time constraints but it still felt like there were these holes in the movie almost as if it were like half the movie.
I understand that they plan to continue the franchise and everything but even with the Star Wars movies and LoTR movies they left me satisfied with the story told. Characters were taken through their journeys and things were explored and I didn't really feel like things were left out.
It might just be me.
I dunno.
Either way I still had fun.
ps.
I wish I could've gotten some starfleet academy type stuff... like them in actual training or something.
but more than that I'd had liked more Karl Urban and of course Simon Pegg.

Saw it last night. Thought it was pretty much awesome. The only thing I can say about it at all, was that there was a serious infusion of Star Wars into my Star Trek. That's not really even to say that it's a bad thing, but it didn't really taste just like Star Trek anymore.
I LOVED that there were serious repercussions are a result of the movie. The the events that took place were serious, and that they'll have lasting effect.
I also loved that I didn't hate the kid playing Kirk. I really thought they'd just cast an annoying pretty boy in that role, but he really pulled through. He had the swagger of Kirk, but at no point did I feel like his performance was a straight imitation of Shatner.
All around, this movie was a blast and a half.

I agree with you that the movie was great fun, but I believe you're forgetting "Iron Man". :)
All in all it was an amazing movie, but my nit-pick involves a spoiler, which is why I am not going to mention it; it involved romance.
I couldn't care less about the romance.

Iron Man was probably the only time in my life I had more fun in a movie theater than seeing Star trek. And I am seriously biased, as I am a casual Trek fan but a huge Iron Man fan.

i'm thinking of starting at the beginning with the original cast.

I'm kind of a greenhorn when it comes to the Star Trek series, as my main exposure has been the movies. For everyone else with knowledge of the series, I ask this: was the Spock-Uhura loving acceptable/in character?

It seemed kind of out of left field for me, in context of the earlier characters, but I thought it made perfect sense in the movie -- and was a neat twist, since I assumed both from the publicity and the beginning of the movie that Kirk and Uhura would hook up.
Since I saw the movie, though, several people have pointed out that there are numerous scenes in the original series of Uhura and Spock being flirtatious. It was never taken anywhere on the show but (a) Spock never had a love life onscreen (there are complexities about Vulcan mating habits that you probably don't want to know right off) and (b) an interracial romance couldn't have been shown on TV at that time (Trek actually caused a big scandal for one scene in which Kirk & Uhura kissed, and that was under mind control -- many affiliates refused to show it though).

Haha if Leonard Nimoy described on the show AND in character the detailed complexities of Vulcan mating, it would surely be one of the funniest Star Trek moments ever. Is there an episode like that?

Wow! I just watched it and never realized that Futurama parodied it in the episode when Zoidberg goes to his own home planet to mate (right down to the music!)

Iron Man is a great movie, but I am not forgetting it. I don't think it is in the top tier of sci-fi/fantasy movies that Star Trek is now in

Finally watched this last night. Standing on its own, I thought it was really good. A fun action movie with all the prerequisites for a good film -- casting, directing, cinematography, script, etc. It's a movie in the same vein as Iron Man and Transformers.
But it's not really a Star Trek movie -- or more accurately, a movie in the Trek tradition. "Dumbed down" is a pejorative, but also a descriptor, and applies to this movie. Of course, alternate realities can create new traditions, can't they?
I really hope Kurtzman and Orci never get their hands on Dune.

I just saw this on Saturday. I attended with my Anti-Trek girlfriend and my Trekkie ex-roommate. I am a moderate Star Trek fan, so I feel like I have all the anecdotal bases covered here. All three of us loved the movie. My girlfriend wants to see it again along with some of the tv series. My friend and I could not find anything wrong with the movie. I particularly loved how there was a perfect blend of action, drama, and comedy. The fx were great as well. I'm looking forward to see it again. Additionally, if it were somehow possible to make a J.J. Abrams led tv show with the majority of the cast from this film, my deepest, darkest desires would be satisfied.
I'm not gonna lie...not only are all the major fights in the movie like this, but whenever there is a fight, the song played when Spock fought Kirk in Amok Time plays.
Not only is this true, but the dialogue of the entire movie consists of the following phrase: "Darmok and Jilad at Tanagra"
