View Full Version : I wish i knew nerds
I have plenty of friends who like what i do but arent really into what is really important to me. I wish my friends were into more games than just the FPSes or like movies other than summer action blockbusters. I envy Jeff Alex and Dannys relationship cause it seems no matter what the idea is theyre all into it.
id love to sit and play a game of Catan with friends... itll never happen

I know how you feel, my man. That's how I felt for YEARS before I met Alex and Dan. And you know how I met them? I went to a game of D&D to play with a bunch of people I didn't know.
There are ways to meet like minds. You just might have to go outside your comfort zone a bit.

Hop on the chat! I totally forgot that Tux runs a Catan game online roughly weekly. Its not the same as in person, but you might at least make new friends. Plus, the chat is where all the cool kids hang out ;)

Well, there is Gen Con and NYC Comic Con, and of course Origins. We are in Con season, and I have met so many amazing people through Cons.
Also, ask your local comic book store guy. I had NO idea where there were local games for Pokemon for the kid, but my amazing comic book guy hooked me up. Plus, he hosts Hero Clicks games. There is a lot of cross over between comics and games, so even if nothing is being hosted there, odds are, they know of something somewhere. Then you just need to go and meet new people.

It took years to find people who are scarily like me. However, it's gotten kind of easier over the years. It started when I went to college. I went to clubs/organizations around things I liked i.e. video games, DDR, movies, anime, etc. Then I meet friends through my friends as well. This past weekend I went to an anime convention and met a lot of local people just the same. It's weird but you kind of may have to go outside your comfort level if you're shy. I was, but became very social at college partly from my job and such. It is worth it to push yourself and be open to new people you never know who you may meet.
Edit: Also, a band I follow now does 8-bit music locally so I'm trying to go their shows. I'd bet the crowds at bands like that are very similar. I found a website through them called Chicago Nerd Social Club (think that's the name). They do meet ups and such so I'll be looking to go to those in the future. So just kind of search the web/Facebook/etc. for similar things.
@diane Gen Con? Isn't that in IN or MI? Sounds very familiar and kind of local. Also, very awesome you have Hero Clix tourneys by you. I went to one, and the place is now out of business :(

Gen Con is in Indianapolis. Its not as big as Comic Con, but it does have a lot going on http://www.gencon.com/2009/indy/default.aspx
Here is some other midwest cons that are fun. http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=welcome/conventions
But in all honesty, the coolest thing I ever saw was the Star Wars Celebration in Indianapolis during 2002. A friend of mine from work was helping to put it together at the convention center. The only problem was she didn't warn me there was a parade. The most bizarre experience ever, Storm Troopers marching down Meridian. Thank goly Anakin was only 4 at the time or that might have creeped him out.
I know the next one will be in either 2010 or 2011, but regardless of who wins the bid to host it, I am so taking Anakin.

Very cool. I wanna go to GenCon a bit, I don't know much about it. I've heard good things. I just got back from Anime Central here in IL, which is a blast.
Thanks for that convention listing. I'll keep an eye on that list. Makes me sad I can never make it to San Diego mainly due to money and time to go.

Dude, you have WizardWorld in your own backyard. That is huge! Chicago has so much going on, that in all honesty, I have thought about moving there instead of LA after my ASA certification. It lost the win though because of snow, but living in a place that smells of chocolate all the time almost overcame the snow factor.

A lack of snow is overrated.. but a complete lack of southern californians is a definite plus. ;)

I go to the New York Comic Con pretty much every year, and always seem to meet people there. It seems whatever type of geek you are, there will be a place for your type to converse. Comic geek? Obviously. Gaming geek? There's a whole secion for all types of games, role-playing or video. Movie geek? Surely there are some there. Plus, the turn out for NYCC is always so super huge, its an amazing congregation of nerdiness from around the country.
...Dwarved by San Diego, of course...

You're on the right forum, if you're after new friends who are into the stuff you like.
