my goal is simple. I want to talk into my mic and be able to hear it out my pc speakers in real time (without having to record then playback the sound). Back in XP all i had to do was go into the sound properties and unmute the microphone.

now in vista this feature is known as "input monitor." the problem is those bastards at microsoft disabled this feature by default. You can't unmute your mic so you can hear your voice in real time unless you use third party software. I've found that some people have done registry hacks to re enable the input monitor but I have yet to find one for realtek hardware. I've tried a couple of different drivers with no luck. this is quite possible the stupidest thing in the world. why would this feature be disabled.

If anyone can help me with this issue I'd be very grateful.

my system specs are an HP "tx2500z" realtek HD audio

Go to Control Panel - Sound. Go to the Recording Tab. Right Click on the white space within the dialog box and choose 'show disabled devices'. You'll see Stereo Mix as one of your devices. This is the one you want to enable. You can also enable the CD Audio player as well. Really if you want to record streaming audio, all you need is the stereo mix and the software for the recording. Free Sound Recorder is a decent and reliable option to do this. Let me know if this works for you...

thanks for the try but all I want to do is speak into the mic and hear it coming out of the speakers in real time. not speak into the mic, record, then play it back. I tried to use a third party software but I keep getting bad results, my copy of FL studios doesn't even work on vista (even with xp compatibility mode). I shouldn't need third party software for what I want to do.

The stereo mixer actually does the opposite of what I want to do. It takes your audio coming out and makes it look like a source in. I want my source in (my mic) to act as a source out... if that makes any sense. Damn vista damn microsoft.

I think we had the same problem, I found the fix. Go to http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/windows/en-us/search.aspx?=&qu=connect+a+microphone+audio+device

The first choice should be what you need. Or here's the direct link (as of today): http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/b0e3d7fb-1b4a-4926-8254-65da289209261033.mspx

Good luck!

Thanks for your input but sorry to say it doesn't help. My laptop only has mic in and audio out no line in (aux in on some machines). my problem is that for people who have realtek hardware that option under levels is not there at all. there is an entry in the registry that disables it. I've been all over google and they have found a registry edits for other big name audio card manufactures. I just gave up and upgraded to windows 7 and there is an option like tehBoris said that lets me do what I want.

and aperently the only way to get a mic to work in virtual box and vmware is to use a USB mic
