Over an hour long... with beer!

I'm not even done watching the show yet, and I had to come here and comment on how much I'm loving this episode. It feels like I'm watching an older episode. I love how they spent 10-20 minutes talking before they switch to another story.

Is Diggnation finally back?

When the episode first started i was worried b/c of the coors light ad that popped up, but this has been the best episode in some time.

if they keep the shows like this it would be great.

I think someone talked to the guys about the forum suggestions...

in this episode; more tangents, over an hour long and funny!
For some reason the video quality looks better this episode (or is it just me)

lol. I think someone definitely told them about the complaints in the other thread.

1) More beer
2) longer
3) Kevin being responsive (Well the episode is about him)

etc.

It is very enjoyable

Best episode I've seen in a long time. Kevin and Alex seemed more energized than they have been in the recent past

Awesome, long, fun and tangent filled episode :D Back to the diggnation of old with lots of tech goodness as well with just the right amount of general news stories. I don't know what made this so great, maybe the new company with Kevin and Alex but it's worked and it's mucccch better!

Wow, this episode is epic. I was a little worried at first since looking at the stories I figured it was one of the "tape two at once" episodes, but it was freaking epic! This is what Diggnation should be! Even the stories were all technology related.

I do have to say though, Kevin is very trusting with his number. Calling a fan without *67ing it? He's done that three times so far. I'm actually surprised it's never been leaked onto the internet. While I'd like to say that Rev3 viewers are more respectful than that, I remember what happened when Leo accidentally put Mitnick's number on the air during TWiT Live.

This episode was EPIC! I hope that this is a sign of things to come. I hope Diggnation will return to the tangent filled, beer fueled, tech-centric show that I know and love so dearly. Thank you Kevin and Alex for a great show and keep up the good work.

Pretty good ep, was definitely long! Had on old feel to it though. I totally want to go camping now, Kevin described it all perfectly. I think they got lost in the camping talk though, it wasn't until like halfway through the ep I noticed they hadn't started with the stories yet. Now I'd just like to see them talk this long about weird stories. :P

I knew this was going to be a great episode when i saw the 24s sitting on the table. Even though they weren't drunk this was an awesome episode. It's the old diggnation resurfacing. The hour show is win. Both of the guys seemed very into it and the tangents were flowing wild, just the way we like it.

It occurred to me that maybe part of the problem is hippie and prager. don't get me wrong, they're awesome to have on the show, but I think it puts kevin and alex in the working state of mind because the "crew" is there (even though there was a crew for this episode). The two other people chiming in, while usually entertaining, breaks the flow of conversation between the guys and gives them a chance to get back on track with the show, something that is not a good thing IMO. i dunno... but this show was amazing. maybe get more drunk before the episode to help with the tangents, but definitely keep em coming like this...

Wow, this was definitely the best episode of Diggnation I have seen in a loooong time. Though when I saw it was an hour long, instead of the ~30 minutes that have been typical as of late, I knew it had to be good.

There were two times I was yelling at my screen though:
1. Talking about Hulu: NBC is on iTunes, Alex! They pulled out for about a year, but they're back on there! Stop making stuff up about them pulling out because they could make more money on Hulu!

2. Talking about Apple TV: They were both all "oh, maybe Apple's giving up on Apple TV because it isn't linked to on the front page." But... It has never been on the front page. You'd think they'd both be on the up-and-up on this sort of stuff.

But even through those two misguided conversations, I absolutely enjoyed an episode for the first time in months. Hopefully they'll keep this up!

1. He was saying this could be a move for all of the networks (excluding CBS) to pull out of iTunes as to get away from having to pay Apple a fee for each download. He wasn't saying they have already pulled out.

2. I have seen it on the front page for a good bit of time. It was a product they were hoping to revolutionize TV viewing. Why would they "never" promote it on the front page? The only reason they would take it off would be if it hasn't been doing as well as they anticipated.

I am glad to see everyone enjoying this episode but, I also don't agree with past criticism. I am sure they will do this when they can. But it isn't possible every week. Both guys have other things going. Sometimes they will have to film back to back episodes. They can't run for three hours at a time. You have to understand.

With that said, I am surprised that Coors Light hasn't been a sponsor before now. It actually fit the demographic. I am sure the Michelob sponsoring successfully lit the fire. Oh, I have had my share of the Coors Light. Oh, Have I. MetallicNitro, I am ashamed that you have not carried on the legend of Albanys' record of being the biggest party school. OK, you don't go to SUNY, but it was the biggest for years. I never went to college, unfortunately, but I did contribute to the alcohol consumption that made the legend. Years later, my Brother and I set a record in a bar. Sharing 22 pitchers as well as having ten shots with our buddies. Everyone bought a round of shots that day.

Even the Bartender, whom no one liked, told us he was worried about us. He thought if we didn't die from the alcohol, we would certainly die in an accident. Never drink and drive. That is too stupid. Listen to the "Click it or Ticket" thing too. They do work and I, as well, feel naked or too loose with out a seat belt. Wear'em.

Good show. When I saw the 1Gig size, I thought there was something else going on. But, it was all show. Nice job. MAYBE, less production structure was the key. Or just good timing.

Really enjoyed this episode. Reminded me of the old Diggnation I knew and loved. Like some others have said (and no offense Prager and Hippie), but the 'substitutes' did a great job. This was shot very well.

I *loved* the tangents and randomness. So funny. The old chemistry between Alex and Kevin seemed alive and well. Please, please, please have future episodes be more like this one. :D

Great episode guys! love the show...

But :) Alex's rant on the AppleTV was full of so many errors, I had to respond.

1) NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, Showtime, etc, etc are ALL on iTunes. NBC was gone for a few months, but they're back just as before. There is no way in HELL ABC would even consider leaving iTunes, it's a huge revenue stream for them, same with NBC and all the rest... none of them will ever leave, they need the exposure AND the money. The Disney deal likely means Hulu is coming to the AppleTV, and iTunes since Steve holds tremendous sway over content providers.

2) The Mac mini is "okay"... but FrontRow is very weak compared to how the AppleTV operates. It sounds like Alex hasn't used a AppleTV recently, and certainly not enough to know its deep abilities... it blows the Mac mini out of the water on several fronts, better video quality, better TV interface, far less cost, etc.

3) Both Kevin and Alex goofed on this... The AppleTV is right on the front page of the Apple Store, a big white huge box, $229

http://store.apple.com/us

4) AppleTV has HDMI, Component, Optical Audio, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11n, so there is no need for a Mac mini.

5) No downloading needed, it simply streams... you just click on the show or podcast you want, wait 3 seconds and it begins to play. I'm wirelessly streaming Diggnation on my 50" Sony screen via an AppleTV right now. You can also download it of course, but there is no need unless you want to archive the shows.

6) I have Boxee on my AppleTV and it works great... (google for direction of how to install it, it's easy) The interface isn't as polished as the AppleTV, but it provides the rest of the open source content like Comedy Channel, Hulu, all my files on my local network, etc.

7) Use a Harmony Remote and click between TV and AppleTV, sweet. Throw away the included, tiny Apple Remote... it's worthless! The AppleTV will sync with any TV remote (it's under settings) it makes all the difference.

Lastly, Alex... you need to realize the AppleTV is still an evolving device, the 2.0 software is miles ahead of 1.0 (which is probably what you saw) So the direction is AppleTV will continue to become far more robust over time... while the Mac mini will remain positioned as a traditional computer, just as it should be.

As Steve Jobs has said:

"We think basically you watch television to turn your brain off, and you work on your computer when you want to turn your brain on."

So the future of the AppleTV is strong within Apple, it's just there is a lot of public ignorance about the device since it's "new" and few people understand how it works. (Alex is a prime example in episode 202 - smirk)

This is how Apple sees the AppleTV internally... It's the product that is going to "atomize" TV, Movie and Podcasts worlds... NOT the Mac mini...

Please be sitting down... this IS the AppleTV's future...

http://www.markleshark.com/macrumors/Intro.mp4

Okay, my rant is off... if you have other questions about the ATV, let me know...

---

Here is a quick video on how to add Boxee to any AppleTV... you just need a USB stick / drive and the app shown here:

Yes, if you are in the U.S., the HULU service may be wonderful... but until the rest of the world can view videos there, it's boring to keep hearing about it.

I can watch any of those U.S. networks with the commercials intact on my cable but not at HULU... WHY?

I know why... but it's just a royal pain.

It's too bad Alex and Kevin didn't note this issue though.

Also, guys, there is an simple port adapter dongle to take the video out of the new Mac mini and change the gender to a traditional HDMI socket. Get it here as an example:

Freaking awesome episode. I don't post on the forum regularly, but this episode warranted a special trip to the forum. 30 minutes is WAY too short, an hour long is PERFECT. I love them just taking a moment before starting the episode to just go on a long pre-story tangent about boy scouts. I could definitely relate to both Alex's and Kevin's experiences with camping.

PLEASE keep this episode's format for future episodes.

You guys need to pick like 50 people who can listen to you record the show live and you can bounce questions off of and get real time feedback. Then you won't have to spend 45 minutes re-inventing Boxee.

Everybody, HipHip! Hurrah!

I haven't watched yet, but judging by the length, the stories and the forum response We're going to see Diggnation beginning to turn back around! Hey, maybe Glenn and Prager were subduing it, I know i'm in a minority here, but I always think Prager sucked the life out sometimes. Maybe the boys got up to some fun because Daddy was away

lobasuu

Hippie and Prager are obviously NOT the problem.

Just finished watching. So happy to see this episode back to the Diggnation I fell in love with. One of the factors that contributed to this, in my opinion, was the fact that all the stories seemed to genuinely interest them (not necessarily just picking the first couple stories they saw) and they weren't afraid to actually DISCUSS the story, their thoughts, etc. It was also great to hear them talk tech again after so many episodes of showing videos, pics, and "regular" news stories.

Great stories of their own, too. I agree with Alex about that type of camping. Going out to a campground where you pitch a tent and sit there with another group of people 20 feet from you isn't the kind of camping I want to do. A lot of them don't even have tents, they bring campers or something. Give me a nice clearing in the woods just off a path with no one around. That's the kind of camping I want.

I really hope next week and from now on is back to the old ways. Thoroughly enjoyed this episode.

I do think someone from Rev3 must have read our forum posts on how to improve Diggnation and told the guys. How odd is it that everything we've been asking for (that's been missing in the last couple months of episodes) *finally* appeared in this episode?

Beer = check
Tangents = check
Longer episode = check
More witty banter = check
Genuine interest in the stories = check

It was all back in this episode, and I'm sooooo thankful for it. :D

And someone said something about the video quality being better? I thought it looked like it was 24p instead of 60i or something?

And I hope the show being better has nothing to do with prager and hippie glenn not being there, because they're both cool.

Has no one heard of the Logitech DiNovo Mini. I love this thing... it's got the little backlit keyboard that you can type on a la blackberrys and such, but with bigger keys, and pc funtion/media keys. plus it has a trackpad on it as well. (not glass though). It's bluetooth and works with both mac and pc.

The EeePC keyboard thing "sounds" intriguing, but the PC in the keyboard seems fraught with issues. A media center with only 16/32GB of storage, not to mention the heat generated by a sufficiently powerful cpu, which means that this will be another Atom powered unit like my beloved EeeTouch, and therefor not really suitable for anything HD.

Alex you know with the new embedding code hulu has tagged to each video. You could build a square space front end. Then set up a desk top and keyboard short cut on the msi wind. Then you package the the msi wind with the Alex Awesome Keyboard gesture pad thing. Then your done.

After you do all that you can send me a nickel for every one you sell. Then flex your internet skills to get revision 3 on the x-box 360.

I've seen every episode of Diggnation. I think this may be the best one ever. It was nice to see them get genuinely passionate about something again instead of just pretending to have polarized oppinions on a subject they obviously don't care very much about. (Usually happens with some non-tech related picture or video which proceeds into Alex saying something like "First off, bro what are you kidding me?" and then Kevin being uninterested. I realize it's hard to have engaging discussions under pressure each week. I think this episode is a testament to their success with technology related material.

Keep it up!

Also, props to the substitute film crew. Well shot and well edited.

I just finished watching ep 202 and it was great as usual. I like the stories and i understand that's the point of diggnation, but with that said, i find that my favorite parts of the shows are when kevin and alex are going off on a tangent. Just the random stuff they talk about is so funny and that's just the best part. I would like to see longer episodes with more banter back and forth. Now i know kevin is on "Random" (which is a talking show) but no offense to tim, i think alex is just way more interesting and funny; they just seem to mesh better. Has anyone out there seen "Random"? I'd like to hear what everyone else thinks about this.

Yup, watching Rev3 shows (and movies, etc.) on a 60" HD TV driven by a new Mac Mini, using Boxee (which supports Hulu again, BTW).

Still not sure if my mom could navigate the system, but for even slightly tech-savvy people, it's a great solution (can even go to CBS.com, if need be :)

Keep it going!

I really like Diggnation, but I was disappointed when I saw them talking about the TV idea. Boxee is what they described and when finally they talked about it (Alec did not know what was Boxee about) and Kevin thinks Boxee only works in Apple TV.

Come on... we believe you guys, you used to be aware of more things than beer. Now it seams that you are far away from the place that you used to have when talking about trends and technology.

I know you can not be aware about all, but really.... Boxee? you did not know about it?? and Kevin did not know that Hulu has movies???? these are not small things or too new...

Is anybody else able to get the Large Quicktime version of this ep from iTunes? I keep getting "err = -39".

I tried un/re-subscribing, but no luck.

EDIT - Nevermind, I just found the problem. I had to delete some temporary files from the iTunes Download folder and then it worked.

Haven't watched it yet.. I'm subscribed to so many.

But I saw that it's an hour long.. we need more like this!
30 minutes is too short!

Really intrigued by the quality of this video. Anyone know what kind of camera was being used? I have a feeling it wasn't all just lighting. Excellent work by the subs!

Yeah, the lighting was really good. One hour is much better because it goes off topic.

I used to use a laptop with my 1080p tv but now I use a dedicated htpc, with blu-ray and hdmi out. I have a panasonic tv and when I set the resolution on the htpc to 1080p there is a border around the urrrrr windows. I need to use the overscan settings to get it fullscreen and it looks shoddy. Any ideas?

Thanks,
/Dante

The HD quicktime download looks better than it has in a _very_ long time. I remember there was a while back when it used to look great, then lately the quality seemed to degrade as the show went on, but now this one finally, once again looks awesome! Big props to the filming crew.

Yep, Glad I watched it after skipping several. Totally the way I remember loving diggnation back in the olden days. Except better sound and vid quality on top of it.

Loved the email/phonecall snafu. Yeah, when a woman wants to deal equally with men, she gets advice from a man to "put her cock on the table" HAHAHA. Both funny, and ironic. (though hardly helpful) :)

fantastic episode EXCEPT for Kevin hating on Ghostbusters. How can you hate Ghostbusters? Just lost some respect

Best Diggnation episode in a long time. Seemed like they both enjoyed doing it, and didn't rush it at all. Keep this up.

Man it's really cool to see it wasn't just the normal crowd getting a bit meh'd out with Diggnation and thinking that this is it back on form. For a few weeks now I thought we were just looking for things to moan at :P

So Alex Albrecht twittered that he was shooting Diggnation this morning. I really hope that's tomorrows Diggnation and not next week's Diggnation. I really like it when they are up on things.

yes I too was one of those posters a week or so ago, with some unflattering things to say about the show, despite the fact it still entertained me and I returned week after week. It is very obvious our posts were conveyed to both Kevin and Alex. They have returned to the show we all remember and knew was still there! The change was startling and hit all the great things we have come to love from the show. I had no idea it would be such a rapid response.

Now, I'm feeling a bit guilty about being so critical of the show. Heck, who am I to complain and make episode suggestions. I can honestly say that I don't always give 100%, there is wear and tear and repetitive fatigue.

Thanks for an awesome show

First hour long show since Xmas, all because of drinking and childhood stories. We won't be seeing anything like this in a while since they'll think we don't want it, even though we say we do, so enjoy it while it lasts.

Is it just me, or is the new Hulu Desktop exactly the idea Alex was talking about in this episode? http://www.hulu.com/labs/hulu-desktop
