While certainly not brand new, there is a movement in independent film making that seems to be picking up some steam. I think that sooner or later the guys, particularly Dan, will be interested in talking about it on the show. Although the subject matter of 2 great examples seems right up Jeff's alley.

The movement I am referring to is using current social and technological resources, particularly the internet, and combining it with fan zeal to create new independent film projects.

A recent example of this is "The Hunt for Gollum", which is a 40 min fan made movie, that actually has good music and fairly decent special effects. It is still fairly campy and it is somewhat a disappointment to see different actors than the ones we have come to love from the Peter Jackson movies. But when you consider that this is a fan movie, really you have to applaud their effort and the end product. And that it fleshes out on screen a section of the Appendices to "The Lord of the Rings", that is quite fun.

The second example that I would offer, and the reason why I am posting this today, is one that just came to my attention. It is a movie that is still in pre-production, but seems to have a lot of potential. It is "Iron Sky". While the premise is certainly campy (not only Nazi's... but Space Nazi's!). After watching the "motion poster" and the trailer inside the site at www.ironsky.net, I have to say that I am impressed. Even more than impressed, I am genuinely excited to see what this international group of independent film makers can pull off.

My first post here is starting a new thread, but hopefully the subject will find some friendly interest here.

Yeah I agree, the technology has really moved on to the point where one, or a couple of people can do some decent effects on their own computers. The improvement in cameras is the main thing though.

Actually the cameras are just about to shift forward to a whole new level.. consumer SLR's now have 1080p24 capability. That is going to change everything. I was looking at the Panasonic Lumix GH-1 video yesterday and for not much money at all you can get incredible looking home movies.

To put that GH-1 in perspective. It's a small micro four thirds camera, about the same as super zoom camera. Compared to the pro gear... The new $3000 3K 'Red Scarlet' camera has a sensor size about half as big and it's twice the price.
