Great Episode! I love the PC building ones!
Also its great to see Patrick try to break something on Tekzilla, reminds me of time's past, although I don't think Veronica is used to it yet! ;)

It would have been priceless if Patrick had opened the case after he beat it and threw it around and pulled out an HP netbook and, at least for a few seconds, the lovely and talented Bearonica thought it was hers.
And Pat, thanks for the recommendation on a video card. I need to upgrade a system but am not a gamer either, and I wasn't sure what the best values were. I'll be picking up an HD4770 on my next pilgrimage to Fry's.

Next time I build a computer its going to be in that awesome looking case.
Next time I build a computer its going to be in that awesome looking case.
I'm very anit-awesome-looking-cases just because they can be very expensive and don't add anything to the computer I would rather buy a super cheap case and spend the difference on RAM or better parts.
I shall be building a new PC (for me soon), although I always find when I build them they end up cheaper than Tekzzila's, I built my family a super-gaming-PC for £250 (would cost the same in $ because of price of parts), it wasn't great but it does everything it's needed to.
I never pay much atention to the looks of a computer, probably because no one apart from me sees mind, I did have KDE (a nice looking GUI) installed but I got rid of it for something more lightwieght as I relised I had no one to show the computer looks off to, not saying I don't have friends just that I don't spend all my time with them showing of my computer.

We liked the professional lool and dress of this episode. We like that the hosts are very amimated in their presentation. Though I do hope that Pat may consider getting advice on anger management. We like the fact that the hosts tried to control the use of expletives (excepting near the end). We like the fact it did not take the whole episode to put a puter together. There was plenty of content. We like the fact that there were detailed show notes.
We respect the Veronica may not be ready to use linux, The linux on the hp nettop was a poor example. The whole linux community was up in arms about that device. We wish she could see some real linux systems. I remember when she would only use Apple computers. It is just a matter of time before she expands her techiness horizons again. I do hope people do not have to pay an arm and a leg for w7. Just using a $300 device just to do web browsing in slow motion is a shame.
Intel plans to drop at least two of the i7 processors, so caveat emptor. That makes me leary about getting a newer system. That is especially true with the fine Intel was just handed by the EU, We have no problem still using our older equipment with the operating systems we have. I did buy a used two dollar socket 478 motheroard and a ten dollar p4 cpu to upgrade my desktop. Works quite well with linux. It worked wihout even having to reinstal linux on the drive that was used from the old amd cpu that died. By the way, W7 would not even install on the new drive I planned to use.
Anyway, we did save this episode.

Why are you talking about your selves in plural?
Don't you mean 'I' or is it a joint account?
Or are you just being crazy?

Vista have very simple tool for Disk Part. Diskmgmt.msc you just shrink volume restart and install W7 over there and thats it...simple as that.
Hardware is fast enough, Core I7 is fast but 300$ its a bit high you can get E8600 with half the price and the same preformance...or go for AMD Phenom II 4x cores if you are coder maniac.
64bit use it with what WinRar is now 64bit mybe some hardware diag like HWMonitor from CPUID thats it mybe some decoding/encoding stuff and thats it...
Hardware this days its in a stall like it was back in the day of first Pentium era.

Yes, but that sure made it easier to reuse parts for upgrading systems like shadetree mechanics swapping out automotive engines. Now there are motherboards for every minute of the day. When you upgrade, you have to almost reinvent the wheel.

Anyone taking bets? Just kidding....
Veronica you can say "that's what she said" to something you say yourself :( That's not allowed. Also you made a sound loop (something I use alot) sound realy complex all you do is have one wire going from your headphone port to your microphone port and then record it in Audacity.
Alternatively you could have on end in the microphone port and the other in a record or tape player, for getting all your old music files onto the computer.
Also if you have an S-video input it's not to hard to back-up all your old VHS tapes onto the computer.

That's one of my favorite movies, and Jimmy Stewart was/is one of my favorite actors. His movies didn't have to be filled with nekkid women just to get people to watch them.

Does anyone have a link to the memory that patrick chose for his system? These will work the same if not better. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227421
And OCZ usually has better latency than Corsair.

Patrick,
Check out Toms hardware site. He did a shoot out using HD 4770"s in
Crossfire mode and they blew past the ATI HD 4890. The HD 4770 costs around
$100.00, that's $200.00 for SLI. ATI 4890 is about $250.00. You can save
$50.00 and and still be at the top of the heap.
Here's the link to the article: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-4770-crossfire,2288.html

Here is the link for the Corsair XMS3 6GB DDR3-1600 they showed on the show. This script said the price was $110, but the screenshot of the web page shows it as $95.

Do you have a link to test of memory latency and how it effects performance? I don't remember seeing anybody, Tom's HW, ExtremeTech, PCPer, etc, testing this specifically?
What I wonder about is why they are always showing Core i7 920 for $280ish? MicroCenter has it for $230. Admittedly, MicroCenter only wants yo to buy just one, but I am not going to build more than one Core i7 rig for the foreseeable future.

It does not show up searching the MicroCenter web site until you select a local store.

Half the price? Really? Where? Newegg currently sells the E8600 at $270. Best price I could find with Froogle was $266.

Same performance? Maybe, only if you have some older software that does not take advantage of the quad core 8 threads of the i7. Back in January 2009, ExtremeTech did a big round up of a ton of processors, Phenom II x4, e8600, i7, and a bunch of quad cores. The i7 kicked everyones butt.

If you want to build a cheaper box than Patrick's estimated $1200, then there are plenty of $500 gaming box recipes. This means using a $70 processor, either a e5300, or a Athlon X2 7850 BE, and cheap case with included smaller power supply.

Or you can go a slightly different direction and pay $167 for the E8400, which easily overclocks to well past the performance of the E8600. My E8400 has been running 24/7 at 4ghz for several months now...on cheap ($30) air cooling.

It doesn't have to be "older software". At present, 4 cores/8 threads on the i7 is a marketing gimmick. In the future, yes, it will be a great advantage. But right now, there are only a handful of games and a few other apps that truly take advantage. This applies to dual cores also.

You're forgetting the most important software the OS. Both Vista & Win7 are able to make use of all cores & threads. This already gives a large performance boost especially if you have the memory. Core i7s with 6 or more gigs of ram do not notice any lag during normal use.

Yes and no. If you run multiple applications or have a lot of background tasks running while you run one main application, yes Vista and win7 can split them up between cores to balance the load. But even Vista and Win7 cannot take a single application that was not written for multiple threads and/or multiple cores and like magic make it do so. If your app was only written for one core then one core is all its going to run on. All your OS is going to do is pick which one core that is.

The easiest way is just to save the file as a standard .m2t file. (no need to convert to mp4).
.mt2 is the default HD stream format that all sony hd camcorders use and is a native sony format. so if you just drop it in there by way of a USB drive or memory card, it will play.
You can also save your video inside a DVD. A standard dvd disk can hold huge amount of video in m2t format. But you have to save it inside a folder labeled "VIDEO" (with all caps)burn it onto a dvd disk and just insert the disk on your playstation. Its like a poor mans version of a blu-ray disk. You get the full HD but on a regular DVD disk.

Because the video is an hour long, wouldn't a Blu-Ray disk have to be burned instead of a DVD?

According to Antec, its fan has a diameter of 250mm (9.84 inches).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Eclipse-N503EA-060825-33comp-12.jpg
According to Wikipedia, the diameter of the fan is 14.5 inches (368.3 mm).
When Patrick builds his computer, please have him demonstrate the Antec Skeleton's fan including noise, volume of air displaced, and heat produced. Oops, just kidding on the last item!
Thanks!
If you want to install windows 7 and you're already running windows on another partition, you can mount the ISO and install it right from there. All the installation files will be copied to the new partition before the first reboot so you don't need to burn a DVD. I've done this myself while running xp for both the beta and the release candidate.

The rpm's will be completely different.
Is it that people are getting dumber, or that more dumb people are finally figuring out the Internet - while believing they have a clue? Either way I'm not overjoyed. Would certainly explain the Apple resurgence as of late.

So this episode of Tekzilla looks much better than previous episodes, and I don't mean the set (Which is also nice BTW). In fact, most revision 3 shows seem to have better lighting. Did you get better light kits? Better lighters? A better color corrector? I would like to know. Thanks.

No time doesnt matter. The ps3 can basically play the files as if it were a bluray disk. your only limit is the actual file size, you can only fit about 4.something higs on a standard dvd. ;)
There may or may not be a 2gig filesize limit per video.
