Just listened Pick of the week #183 and just thought I'd chip in on the Batman: Cacophany debate.

I love Batman but I'm not a fan of Kevin Smith at all, Well his films anyway, way to crude for my taste.

Having never read any Kevin Smith comics due to the fact i only started reading comics after The Dark Knight was released.

But I have to say I LOVED THIS BOOK! The first Issue was good, maybe a little "low" in places but the next two issues were truly great. I loved the dialogue and the art blew me away.

Being new to comics this is no expert opinion and I should also point out that I LOVED FINAL CRISIS but I urge everybody to check it out.

And they say Final Crisis wasn't new reader friendly :)

I'll probably pick up the 3 issues at a con, when I'm picking up millions of other old issues I normally wouldn't buy on my weekly spending spree.

I am a huge Kevin Smith fan, I even love his Daredevil run. However I cannot stand Cacophony. I thought it was uninteresting, the art was sloppy and inconsistent. I just didnt dig it, but to each their own.

Apparently Kevin Smith is doing another Batman mini with Flanagan.

No offense to all Flanagans but I groan when I here he's still doing art. Cacophany was one of the worst looking comics to come out this year.

Final Crisis is the best thing I've read since I started reading comics last year, I loved it!

I also loved the first issue of Run.

I'm a Smith fan, I've enjoyed almost all his comic book work. I will say I didn't like Cacophony and the art was a big part of the reason, but every artist improves with time so Ill give a look at the next work like I did the last

I am pretty much as big of a Kevin Smith fan as you can be. I love his movies. I loved his run on Daredevil. I loved his run on Green Arrow. When this book came out, I snatched it up, despite being burned in the past by things like Daredevil: the Target. But as a huge fan, I HAD to get this.

And I hated it. Seriously, this was one of the worst comics I have ever read. I don't remember if it was Josh or Ron who said it, but they described it best when they said it was "wordy fan fic." That really sums it up.

This was also the WORST Joker I have ever read. Smith took the most maniacal psychopathic madman in comics history and turned him into a fruity movie buff. He was written so out of character it was embarrassing. I would avoid this at all costs if you are a Joker fan.

Or a fan of good comics.

but hey, everyone makes mistakes. I would probably pick up another Smith mini, based on my enjoyment of most of his past comics work.

Eh, you listen to some podcasts and interviews Smith did right before working on Cacophony and it really sounded like he was having geekasm due to the Dark Knight. I can see a writer seeing someone else's rendition of a character and think to themselves "That was awesome, I should write MY take on the character" and it just coming out like a sloppy fan fic. I like Smiths movies and comics, so I'll be willing to give him another chance.

And call me a total comic noob or whatever (for the most part I kind of am). What was bad about the art? I've never been one to pick out good comic book art vs. bad. One thing I think is ugly everyone drools over, and other times I won't even notice the art and fans will think it's hideous. I didn't think the art was good or memorable, but I just can't see what's bad. And it's not just Flanagan, it's a problem I have with all comics.

I didn't think the art was bad at all. It certainly wasn't the best thing I've ever seen, but it was solid artwork that got the story across and had a unique style to it. I have no real complaints about the art at all.

Cacophony, to me, wasn't even a Batman story. It was a Joker story. And this one seemed to go more with the theory that each Joker is a different Joker. Apparently this one is way into pop culture references, and though he wasn't the dark, sadistic Joker we have all come to love, he was a nice change of pace from, say, Azzarello's Joker.

To me, the interesting part was Onomatopoeia (the villain who spoke sound effects). This is a villain Smith has been seeding into other stories for a while, and I hope eventually we get a story where it all finally comes to a head.

For 3 issues, I didn't feel cheated or like I had wasted my money. Any longer and it probably wouldn't have been worth the $$$.

Cacophony is actually the very first comic I read that was wrote by Kevin Smith. I must say that going into it I was a little put off. I knew that Smith had written comics before, and I enjoy his movies as they are. I figured the comics would be a long the line of his movies but truth be told, I was shocked to see that it turned out to be a very good read. I enjoyed the story a lot and have recommended it to several of my friends.

Smith has went from silly toilet humor to much much worse toilet humor. I find nothing in his last four movies to be funny whatsoever. If your going to be crude and vulgar, you better sell it. Smith can't sell shit.

The Daredevil run with Kevin Smith was pretty stellar. I enjoyed it a lot. Green Arrow was decent. Cacophany, lame. His comic career seems to be going the same way his movie career did.
