Are making gyros at home more effort than it's worth?

I love them so much. But seems like a hassle to season a bunch of lamb, make the sauce just right, etc...

They is the awesome sauce, when made by authentic Greek methods. Other wise they are just lamb tacos.

Yes. Complete PITA (heh :) )
However, you can get frozen strips of gyro meat that all yo need to do is heat/brown in a fry pan. They look like Steakums, but are the seasoned lamb/beef combo you get in a good gyro/souvlaki/doner kabob.

Make some tzatziki sauce (yoghurt/cucumber), some sliced tomato and lettuce (or tabouhli), throw some of the gyro meat, and wrap in pita. Yum.

I used to live on those things in Melbourne.

Melbourne (Australia) has the largest greek community outside of Athens (Greece, not Georgia), so gyros (and the variations on spelling) were real good. Best in Melbourne? Lambs on Chapel.

If I was still back in Melbourne I could take you to 10 places that did a good doner kabob (gyro) within 30 min of where I worked/drank (downtown Melbourne CBD - the pub we drank at was under the building I worked in ... convenient on a Friday afternoon :) ).

Best ones assembled the gyro, then put the whole thing in what was basically a big pannini maker, and grilled the outside of the pita. Really added to the texture.

Melbourne is an awesome city for foodies. Yet to find anywhere else in the world to match it. I could be eating an Ethipoian curry one day, japanese vege pancakes the next, awesome chinese from china town the next, and some of the best italian south of the equator the next (Lygon St, FTW). Miss Melbourne ... definitely the town I call home back down under.

the most best, most awesome Gyro I had was in the little greek fishing village (and tourist trap) (but legit greeks) in Florida. Town called Tarpon Springs. I will never forget it, and doubt it will ever be matched on this continent.

In Salt lake city there is so many Greek places I have had so many Gyros and my fave one is at a place called Yanni's.
I remeber when it was just Yanni himself in this tiny box of a place no bigger than a bathroom as he straight from greece made each one himself, then he got so much business he had a new place built and became afull fledge fast food greek place. They still taste great but not as good as when It was Yanni himself in that box way back when.

Oh and while spelled "Gyros" You say it more like "yeeros" although some one is from greece will prob bash me on that version haha.

One of my fave foods.

Are there any chain restaurants that make a good gyro? I'm just curious.

I know of Crown Burger but think that is only in 2 states Colorado and Utah.

But to be honest I would search for a genuine greek place that does not serve them off a heat lamp.

Not sure if they're "chain-chain" but I had a pretty decent gyro from Daphne's Greek Cafe. Not sure if they'd be in your area, but here's the website: http://www.daphnesgreekcafe.com/

Also! One dollar hummus/baklava.

Good Eats has a episode on how to make Gyro.

OH MAN, I think I know what I want for dinner tonight when I go out with my friends later. I love going to Astoria, Queens, NY. Greek communities FTW!
