So, there's the trailer. Shit. It's a shame, because I was really looking forward to this. I thought Robert Downy would be perfect, and I was willing to give Guy Richie a chance. IMO, I believe that this movie will be to sherlock holmes what batman and robin was to batman.
Thoughts?
But, Rachel McAdams is really hot.

It's certainly an interesting take. I'm a Jeremy Brett guy, but this looks like it could be fun.

Hey, samsies. I love Jeremy Brett. But for me, Sherlock Holmes should not get hit in the nuts. I mean, it seems like they are almost mocking him.

Sometimes that happens in a fight. I dunno, I think you're looking too hard for insults. Is this more or less outrageous than having a cryogenically unfrozen Holmes in the present day or the wildly divergent Young Sherlock Holmes or Gene Wilder's take on Holmes?

No, but I was all excited for this to be a faithful intelligant Sherlock movie.

I think that notion went out the window when Guy Ritchie was brought on to direct.
I also don't think that a faithful Holmes movie is going to get made anytime soon, as much as I'd like to see one.

I think this movie will be more faithful than it appears at first glance. In the original Doyle stories, Holmes was pretty bad ass. He was very athletic and one of the best boxers in London. There's no reason why he can't come out of his drug addled stupor long enough to kick some ass. Batman isn't the only person who is a great detective plus a damn tough guy. Plus, Ritchie is supposedly a holmes nut, so I'm hoping he knows what he's doing. I won't mind small changes if it stays true to the spirit of the characters and produces a fun movie. Then again, maybe it will be horrible. Either way, I'll go see it for sure based on this trailer. Hopefully, I'll have a Star trek reaction and not a Wolverine one.

I don't know. I tend to try to judge things within the actual context of the movie, not as a 3 second clip as part of a trailer. Maybe it will work, maybe it will be totally out of place. We won't find out until December.

i know nothing about Sherlock Holmes and I'll see it. looks like it could be good
You know, Holmes has been done in so many different ways throughout the years that I can't get riled up about any film being true to the spirit of the books. This looks like fun to me.
But maybe the Star Trek reboot has me optimistic about such things.

it looks ok to me.
I agree that once it was announced that Guy Ritchie would be the director for the movie I didn't think it would be a "serious" movie.
but if they can make it a cool action flick with some great actors based on a character i love... then so be it.

Remember, guys, that this is a trailer, and its supposed to make the movie look exciting to the general public. There have been plenty of misleading trailers throughout the years, both for good and bad. Adventureland is probably the most recent example, as it looked in the trailers like a screwball comedy, but instead was a touching coming-of-age story. I'm not counting this movie out yet.

This does indeed look like a really fun Holmes movie. At least, I hope that's what we'll get. To be honest, I love classic, intelligent Holmes without a doubt, but so far this new direction isn't bothering me.

Exactly. I'm glad somebody mentioned the renaissance man that he was. I saw the preview on T-Salvation with 3 other guys and they just said, "that doesn't look like SH at all". Then I proceeded to ask if they had read the books. Resounding "no".

Big Brett fan here too, i have two big Jeremy Brett Holmes box sets that I rewatch regularly. As a fan of the original stories, I can honestly say that Brett's incarnation most captured the peculiar character of Holmes most faithfully; it may have something to do with Brett himself being manic-depressive. He played Holmes like someone suffering from that condition, and it just slid perfectly (and surprisingly, perhaps) into the contradictory character that Doyle wrote.
In a way though, that almost makes me look forward to this version more; the Brett era was just so spot-on as an adaptation, so faithful but so exciting and convincing, that I really don't envy anyone trying to do that kind of adaptation again. It's almost guaranteed to pale in comparison. Whereas a good reinterpretation that doesn't try to compete with the almost-perfection of that era could well succeed in creating something as memorable, just because they have the licence to be a bit different and try their own thing.

I understand it's a trailer, and we cant really judge a film until we see the full version.
But after seeing the trailer; this looks really bad. Almost as bad as the GI Joe trailers have been. I hope this is just the case of bad editing on a trailer and the end result is much better.

Because Marlon Wayans sucked in "Requiem for a Dream", right?
Of course, I thought the G.I. Joe trailer looked pretty good.

Keenan Ivory has been the producer on each of their parody movies since "Scary Movie". The family is hella tight.
