I want to test the transfer speeds on my home network and am looking for advice on what software to use. I also want to test the speeds and performance of my hard drives so I can figure out which ones I need to put in what machines. Thanks

That is a can of worms. Start with a web engine search.

A good bench test will compare components in ideal circumstances varying a single component at a time. So, you will need the same Mobo, RAM, OS, etc., and just change the hard drive.
SiSoft's Sandra used to be good. Not so sure about it today, since it has been awhile since I have done that sort of thing.
Since you are talking about networks, your bottleneck wont be the HDD anyway, it will be the LAN connection. Pretty much any HDD will be able to keep up with the LAN.

One might be better off designing their own tests. I.e. take a large file and then using some kind of time masurement transfer the file beween systems to measure the results.
