Doesn't look too bad, I'm normal one of those people who has the opinion that if it an't broke don't change it.
But the new Rev3 isn't any worse than the old one, it does seem a little too flash for my liking but I have just changed my homepage to http://revision3.com/episodes and I could get used to it.
I do like the new episode pages though.

Site looks great!
It's going to take some getting used too but overall it looks pretty nice.
I'm really digging how the forum looks now.

Yea I like the forum and the video pages, although I agree the main page will take some getting used to, I have set my homepage to the main page again, I'm sure I will get used to it. Are there ads on it, because on my browser there is a some odd bits of empty space, but it could be because the ads are blocked.
The way everything slide I keep wanting to drag it with my mouse and move it like on an ipone.
I don't like the changes to the forum layout, it looks like you've taken a leaf out of eBay's book in regards to the topic listing layout, they're spaced too far apart now so you have to do more scrolling to look through the topic titles to find the one(s) you want to read. The cell padding variable is set a little too high.
The other thing I don't like is how you've changed the text colour from brightness level 132 right up to 255 whilst also darkening the background from 44 to 31, there's too much of a contrast now. Text brightness level of 190-200 would look better IMHO:
http://www.haku.co.uk/pics/Revision3ForumText.gif
http://www.haku.co.uk/pics/Revision3ForumText.gif
Why, oh why, did you make that image a gif?
I like the extra contrast, I would't mid if they turned it down a bit I'm fine with it how it is.
You're right, I should have made it a PNG, would've been half the filesize.
My proposal for the text is as above, just dim it slightly, there I've dropped it down to 191 from 255, the slightly lower contrast makes it look better than the original but not as harsh as it is now.
edit: there's a small bug in the new layout, everyone has a thin grey line above their avatar.

Well, I've been fiddling around with it and all I can say is that I, personally, am DI-Double G-ing it! It doesn't look cleaner per say, but it looks so much more beautiful and modern. I am really loving the new bigger screen to just the right format it seems for most of the shows without losing quality. Also, the theater feature brings a good bonus to it.
Keep up the good work, I'm lovin every second of it.

I think the new site design is looking good! And I have noticed some new tweaks to the homepage already. So it looks like it will continue to evolve a bit from here. The new larger video player with the theater and pop out modes is a nice upgrade for sure.

I kind of miss the forum stuff at the bottom of the page, though It may not be necessary anymore.
And the way the 'features' slider is narrower than the rest of the content seems off to me. Maybe there should be some dark gray rectangles on either side behind the arrows to keep the grid in check.
edit: I think the homepage either just changed on me, or wasn't rendered correctly the first time, because the twitter feed just jumped from the right to the left, which looks better.

Yea I've had a few things move on me too but I think it was just firefox downloading the graphics.

Great job. Love the new site.
Love the new site, some issues for show pages when trying to download, as in its hard to get the download links. But good otherwise :)

I'd like to still have episode numbers on all the front page links. That helps me keep my brain organized. Otherwise everything else is ok. Nothing seems to wow me, but nothing else bugs me either

i love the new revision 3 but there's two flaws with it that i think...
1. is the center fold that switches between show and news advert, this section needs to be stretched out so it fits the rest of the canvas
2. the top right where it has the signup or search feature... it looks lonely and out of place in that corner up there. How about you put a greyish silver background behind revision 3 on the left hand side to keep things even? or better yet make the search section itself in a darker more black background.
anyway, just one man's thoughts. Feel free to yell at my opinions but their still going to be here.

The new site looks fine, nothing like crazy new to me yet but i have not looked all around. I do like the bigger video deal.
Love the brighter color and such of the forums.

I dont like how the topics are suddenly centered. It's tough to read sometimes when they arent all on the left hand side.
Other then that it's a good layout.

Looks really slick, but my only suggestion is to make it quicker to get to download links. I think this was an issue the last time the site was re-designed, and they changed it back. I can't be the only one that downloads directly from the site, am I?
I think the "downloads" tab should automatically be chosen on the show pages, with "share" being the second option.

Also just noticed that if someone posts a new post on a thread....the link to the thread isnt bold like it used to. So now it's a little hard to tell what is a most recent post or a recently discussed topic. Is there any way to keep that design into this one?

Really like the new site but I agree the font is a wee bit bright.

WOAH!!!! everythings so shiny!!
the grey background thing is a bit bright, but the font is fine
On a wide screen monitor the main site looks poor. Everything is squashed into the center of the screen, All of the gray boxes are big and distracting and it makes the text feel smaller and harder to read. It looks disjointed, just many ugly modules stacked on each other, no cohesion. Also file sizes on download links would be nice. On the forum everything is so shinny and so much bright popping out from a dark background, it hurts the eyes after a few minutes. Also, why are descriptions of threads not showing up left justified, that's just so weird.

I noticed a guest poster over in the co-op forums (flight control thread). Is this a new feature? I can't remember seeing a guest in the past.
In my experience when forums opens up guest support they either get more active and draw in more active users, or it falls into spam and flame war central.

After using the new site for a day or so the only thing that stands out to me as annoying is the homepage carrousel where it isn't as wide as the rest of the page to make room for the arrows. I think a better solution would have been to integrate the arrows into the dimmed bar at the bottom of the feature images and making the overall feature image wider.
I probably didn't explain that very well, so here's a quick mockup:
http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/5918/change.jpg
One final suggestion/request: On the homepage you have the horizontal scroller for "Watch Revision3" - I like this, it's a cool idea. What I would suggest though is that as you scroll left and right it highlights the name of the date you are currently on and add a subtle white border for each of those shows, so if you select wednesday any shows airing on wednesday go green, likewise as you scroll right to the wednesday area the "wednesday" box lights up and the shows gain a white border. Also, it should ideally have it's start point on the current day, right now it's always on Monday but if it's a Wednesday automatically scroll it to that position so people can easily see what's coming out today.

The site is nice but looks to "busy" they should keep the top blocks and have it advertising each of the shows so users dont have to scroll down. This could be confusing to some users, either way its a nice web2.0 feel.
Anyone have a screenshot of the old rev3 site now that was good maybe even perfect

What a ridiculous statement. Maybe give them a suggestions? I remember seeing these comments just over a year ago and now people are proclaiming they loved the old one. Give suggestions and then give it time, it will grow on you.

What a ridiculous statement.
Agreed...that is all.
I believe i like the new revision3 redesign, but i have one slight issue with the homepage. (Forum text could be dimmed down a bit too... pure white is too bright for such a dark themed site) It doesn't flow as well as it should... it seems a collection of blocky modules with little organization.
btw, anyone think the new homepage redesign is slight reminiscent of hulu.com?
EDIT: Hmm, the homepage seems to have changed slightly... better actually. Their listening, lol.
EDIT2: Is there a way to make the topics block wider, instead of just a square block? That would make it fit in a bit better with the flow.

Oh hey the topics arent centered anymore. They're back to being on the left hand side on the page. I dont think it was solely based on my suggestion but thank you for bringing that back guys.
Now the indication there is a newer post (by being bold) would be brought back then this is a perfect update.

This is still implimented, but now the vertical spacing of the topic list is larger it doesn't stand out as much as it did on the old layout, especially with the light coloured line inbetween the table cells of the topic names.
I still wish they'd dim the forum text to 4/5 it's current brightness.
And vertically reduce the cell size of the topic titles so you get more topics onto a single page - not everyone has/uses HD resolution screens.

I really wasn't that crazy over the re-design at first but the little tweaks they have done to the front page have made it grow on me. As for the Forum text color I don't mind the bright white. The contrast makes it easier for me to read it.

A lot of media sites go for minimalism, I can't fault that, when displaying thumbnails of shows dark backgrounds are the best. However the font contrast is too harsh for me.
Homepage:
I liked the original design, a feed of new shows. That got incorporated into the last redesign after criticism. Now its been relegated to below 1280px of the page. Also the daily and weekly shows are mixed in a decision that I can't understand. The content is cluttered and not structured in a logical way.
Show pages:
Pretty much perfect.
Episode pages:
Do people use the share tab more than the download tab? Show notes could be better, but that's probably asking too much, perhaps a wiki would solve it.

Site homepages in general are best used as a way to guide new or newish users towards the best and/or most recent content. The "see all" links on the small list of recent episodes on the homepage go to http://revision3.com/episodes -- which is a better page to visit instead of the homepage for the style of episode lists it sounds like you prefer.

Do people use the share tab more than the download tab? Show notes could be better, but that's probably asking too much, perhaps a wiki would solve it.
It's actually a close call between those two tabs. In the future we may add a preference for you to set your default tab to Downloads (similar to how we added the autoplay preference), but that's just one of many ideas... it will take some time to gather more usage data and figure out the best mix of customization options and tweaks to implement.
We're always trying to make both viewing and sharing our content (and more specifically, only our content that YOU like) as easy as possible for everyone. I hope it's apparent that this new site is only the very beginning of a huge step in the right direction towards making that experience the best it can be.
Regarding the show notes tab, what exactly do you think is lacking? I'm not sure I can envision how a wiki would fit into that section.
boldfire
05-22-2009, 09:54 AM
Regarding show pages, ideally some shows would have detailed pages. Like Tekzilla would have a list of past "Websites we just cant get enough of", maybe partner with Viddler like Beta did to get an upload video form on the site which goes directly to them. Product review write ups maybe.
This said, I think most people understand that's a huge undertaking and Revision3 might not have the time and resources to do that.
I'm annoyed that the site background is an advert because every-time I try and block it the site looks HORRIBLE.
Still can't complain Rev3 have to make money somehow, I just have to choose whether I would rather look at a plain white background or have horrible beer ads all over the page.

Uhm, autoplay preference?! last time I checked autoplay could never be turned off, I've had to add the revision3 shockwave video player url to my Adblock+ list so it would never autoplay.
99% of the time I visit an episode page is to download the XviD file, moving it to a tab you have to specifically select before the download links appear is annoying.

I like the darker colors very much. If I had my way, everything online would have a dark background. The bright whiteness of most sites hurts my eyes.
However, I still can't stay logged in. Fix that or take off the check box for it.

When's the last time you checked? Before the update I'm assuming, because since the update there is a preferences page, where you can disable autoplay (it actually seems to work) at http://revision3.com/account#change-preferences. Granted, you have to be logged in for it to not autoplay, but I haven't been logged out like I used to be on the old site, so it seems to be working.

Do you hit revision3.com/forums directly when you come back to the forums and aren't staying logged in, or do you go to revision3.com and click one of the community/forums links? It seems to make a difference in how well the remember me option sticks.
We're still looking into it since it's pretty rare now, but should have a permanent fix soon. If you wouldn't mind PMming me some details about how you get back to the forums when the problem occurs, and what browser + OS you're using, that would help too.

I come straight to the forum. Let me try a few different ones and I'll PM you.
Have to say the new system is actually remembering who I am, the old system had serious alzheimer's and would forget me in about an hour, meaning I had to log in every time I wanted to post - so for that reason I never bothered looking at the preferences further than setting my avatar/sig/location.
I'm still going to leave the revision3 web video player blocked in case the system forgets who I am and tries to autoplay - that player is very taxing on the system, much more so than YouTube's video player.

I guess there's nothing wrong with blocking the player if you're never going to use it, but I assure you that the new autoplay preference works very reliably. As long as you're logged in, episode page videos will not autoplay once you've set that preference :)

I've just had to login to post this reply, the forum still occasionally forgets who I am (even though I'm on a static IP and don't clear cookies) so I'll keep the block on the player. I can temporarily turn off the block if I want to watch a revision3 show in the browser anyway.

Here's the thing: I liked the new visual. But I really, really hated the layout for displaying old episodes. Before the redesign, I could easily download a bunch of diggnation, tekzilla or ifanboy episodes all at once because they were all in one single page. Now, they're splitted in groups of 15 episodes with a crappy javascript that freezes my firefox everytime I'm changing pages. It's annoying!
I know, it probably saves bandwidth and because of that it costs less money this way, but I really disliked it. IMHO, the older way was better.

Could you please ad an episode number in the rss feeds?
I usually subscibe to a couple of shows i like, and watch them on my Xbox 360,
but since there is no episode number and the XBox (via tversity) tend to sort by title name, and i have a shot attension span, i always get confused if there is a new episode out, wich episode i saw last and what it was called.
Since i dont really remember the title all the time, this gets a bit annoying.
Sure i can go to my computer and se what episode is the latest, but its just that extra step that makes me not bother watching at all some times...be cause I'm a lazy bastard **Lol*
..maybe its just me, but seems it ought to be a rather simple thing to ad.

That's really odd, I've never seen it get sorted by anything other than date (most recent first) which would be the equivalent to sorting by episode number. We'll play around with tversity and check it out...
