View Full Version : DVD shelf
After Dans video tour of his house on the last TRS I thought it would be cool for fans to do a tour of there houses but then I thought it would be boring and I don't want to watch loads of video tours of people's houses so I thought it would be cool if you posted picture of your DVD and books shelfs here instead.
I won't post my family book shelfs because I don't read and I want post my DVD shelf because it is tiny but here are my families (I borrow DVDs off them all the time as they have more than the local libery)
We have lots, I'm actually amazed we have more than Dan:

If you are wondering the blank disc are rev3 shows from I used to burn several to a disc before we retired the old family PC as a media center PC. I can't believe how recently I lived there that the discs are still lying around.

Ubuntu sticker = awesome.
Oh yea, I forgot about that, the media center PC did have Mythbuntu on but now has my personally modified Xubuntu (actually using LXDE or fluxbox can't remember) with XBMC (XBox Media Centre unfortunataly the best open sourse thing I could find) set to auto-run, my family can now stream stuff from one PC to the other when I'm not even there. I've shown them how to use Po-Ru's iplayer downloaders as well (a command line tool for downloading DRM free programs off Iplayer).
What would they do without me, eh?
And the TV is only SD :(
If you noticed I tried to arange every thing in some kind of order but it has just gone back to chause.
It was Us and PGs top shelf, 12-18 second top, Box sets bottom two.
Then I had a systems like Dan's of having the genres fade from one to another, genres take president over rating so all the HPs are on the top shelf.
I would love to see other fans DVD and video game shelfs.
Our games our just in a pile gather dust, we have a big enough hard drive to have them all installed at once (I remember when we could only have 2/3 installed at a time) and
my mum didn't want a duel boot on the PC because she didn't want to restart to check here e-mail in Linux, so everything that can run in Wine is installed with a no-cd crack so we don't need to bother with the discs.

Yeah, but then The Bodyguard cancels it out. :D
I'll join in the fun and take pictures once I get home so I can be mocked too.
Yeah, but then The Bodyguard cancels it out. :D
That's not mine, actually none of the discs are mine, these are the families but I didn't choose that one (I did choose the Ubuntu ticker), if you look it's still in it's shrink wrap so either it was a present or it was another my dad picked up for £3 at Tesco.
Edit: it was £3 from Tesco (still has the sticker on), my Dad (and other members of my family) have a horrible habit of buying stuff because it's cheap my Mum says (and I agree) "it's not cheap if you only watch it once, it's a very expensive rental", I'm the opposite I will just save and save until I have enough money to buy what I wanted then realise if I just save a little longer I can get the next thing up which is twice as good.
We have a larger DVD and fiction book collection than our local library, then again our local library is tiny.

I love mystery shows as you can tell.
I also have about 1153 movies but i keep them in large binders to save space.
Smallville FTW!
Not seen many of the others but you have quite a collection there, mainly TV shows or do you have a separate shelf for movies?
I find some TV shows have more re-watch value than films, not always though.

Sorry missed that bit about the movies :o, my sister does the same thing although she left all the cases on her shelf which I think is odd.
Anyway wasn't sure if it would be a good thread or not (didn't know how happy people would be uploading photos of the inside of there houses). Anyway glad you thought it was a good idea better than trying to convince every fan to do a video tour of there house.

Alot of people seem to have HD-DVDs. Which I think is cool, I'm glad Blueray won the war (my understanding is they were the better format) but on Amazon UK you can pick up HD-DVDs cheaper than normally DVDs and a Blueray / HD-DVD combo player for PC isn't that expensive (Under £60 in some places).
Of course I think it's too late for me to get one by the time I do HD-DVD will be gone. I could buy as many as I can now and get a player later but I don't want to do that.
@joeyrock (http://revision3.com/forum/member.php?u=63375) me like most of what you got :)

Fry's sells all hd-dvd from like $7-$9 and like you mentioned, on amazon marketplace you can get most of them for under $5.
and with WB doing the trade in program you just trade in your hd-dvd to blu-rays for $5 it does not make me feel as bad about originally choosing hd-dvd.
I thought compared to Dan my family had a big DVD collection, obviously not. :o

Yeah things are different now but back at the start of the "war" HD DVD was the better format. That's why I went with it. My HD DVD collection more than doubled after they killed the format :p I got a load of releases from Australia with the then great exchange rate. I think I got Heroes season 1 for £5 when a couple of weeks earlier they were selling it for £30. It's still pretty expensive on blu-ray and it's the same video quality on the super cheap HD DVD.
You've just got to look after the player, because you won't be able to get new one. That's why I have two of them. I can always rip all the discs down the line. Or even sell them, HD DVD prices have picked up again slightly.

Yea we buy less now we rent DVDs (we change companies every few months to make use of all the free trails), but unfortunately all of them get REALLY bad after a while and send you stuff from right at the bottom of your list so we make sure we keep it just 2 discs over the minimum.
So when they don't send us anything we want my dad will just buy what is cheap at Tesco. We also buy movies know we will watch more than once.

Here is my room of stuff, yes my things occupy a room all on their own. Camera angle/flash hides some of the stuff, and some is out of focus, I might do a video run-through of everything 1 by 1 if anyone is interested.
I make no apologies for anything I have, some of it might not be hip to have, whatever. I honestly haven't even read or seen everything I have. I'm the kind of person who will just pick up something once in a while because it sounds good, and then save it for later. Plus, I can't even bring myself to get rid of anything once I get it. I might want it back later!
This is my graphic novels on the top 2 shelves, under that is PS3, PSP, DS, and PSP on the left.
PS2 and a couple PC games with a few strategy guides on the right.
http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/9885/dscn0023.th.jpg (http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/9885/dscn0023.jpg)
The main shelves, the whole top 4 rows on each bookshelf are TV/anime seasons, bottom left has some cult/grindhouse/B-movies and a couple books I got as gifts, then the other 2 are my Blu-Rays.
http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/6136/dscn0125.th.jpg (http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/6136/dscn0125.jpg)
I didn't want to open all the cabinets, cause there would be too much covered up, but inside the 2 on the left and the middle bottom one are my favorite CD's (I used to have a lot more before I started collecting this other stuff), top right is some of my leftover DVD's, bottom right is a bunch of miscellaneous stuff that doesn't fit anywhere. Then of course I have a couple weapons with which to hurt people should they decide to try to make off with my stuff.
http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/3843/dscn0027x.th.jpg (http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/3843/dscn0027x.jpg)
My TV from my computer (different room), I keep both very close, so I can watch something and surf at the same time. There's only a PS3 and a PS2 there, but that's all I need. I keep whatever I'm playing on the right side by the stand, usually a couple GameFly games and Rock Band 2.

Honestly, for me, the exact same thing can be said about collecting vast amounts of DVDs. Understand I am not anti-DVD or anything, I am just not able to rationalize purchasing loads of DVDs that I know I will not be watching more than once, such as television seasons (especially with the addition of Hulu) or just spending the money on any old general release. Obviously I am generalizing, but again, in my opinion, I ask the same questions when I see collections of hundreds of DVDs.

If someone stole all my families (and my) DVDs, it wouldn't matter as we have them all backed up and if we lost the back as well, I would just Torrent them, I've paid for them I'm gonna download another copy.
We buy so many DVD's because
A: We will watch them more than once, remember we have 5 kids in our family house so they normally watch a couple of films a night.
B: Or they are cheap and the DVD rental didn't send us anything the whole family can watch so my dad will nip out and buy something.
C: We don't have a TV licence, in the UK you have to pay something like £140 a year to watch livd TV, plus cable costs plus adverts, so we watch everything online or on DVD.

I agree, my DVD collection has been amassed over 10 years. I've gotten rid of a 1/3 of it. I've brought about 2 or 3 DVD's in the last 2 or 3 years. I switched to HD DVD and brought about 25 of those in 18 months... before buying up the rest super cheap. Went a bit crazy on those :p Then I switched to blu-rays and have gotten 14 of those in 10 months. But the difference with DVD's that you can actually do something with a film, watch it :p. There is absolutely nothing you can do with an oranment.
We don't have netflix in the UK, we have lovefilm. They are basically the same (you can get games though.. don't need a gamefly type service).. but they don't do a streaming yet. I think they are launching that in a couple of months. I currently get loads of blu-rays, games, DVD's from lovefilm. When I can stream stuff from them, and hulu when they start their UK service, then no doubt my DVD/blu-ray getting will drop further. Lovefilm's streaming service is rummoured to have a more extensive catalogue that netflix so it should be pretty awsome.

Nice!!! Do you need a TV License though because loads of services claim to be free and actually they just assume you are paying your license.
Just checked and you have to have license even if you are not watching BBC shows :( Unfortunately I had to make an account to find this out, the link to the T&Cs was broken, I know I could watch without a TV license but if I was going to do that I could just pirate the shows it would be just as illegal.
A TV license is a redundant concept, I understand you need to pay it for BBC shows as they don't have any advertising but you HAVE to pay it to watch other stations as well even once not funded by the license, the law states that if it is physically possible for you to receive the station then you have to pay for it, anyway enough of my rant, thanks anyway.

Probably the wrong thread to get into it.. :p But the TV licence is worth it. The BBC is the best broadcaster on Earth and it's mere presence has a knock on effect to keep the volume of advertising on all the other UK TV down. You only have to watch US TV for a short period to see how lucky we are. Plus shows like Top Gear just wouldn't exist if the network had advertisers to worry about pissing off. Then there's the "economically un-viable" educational and nature programming that just wouldn't exist. You should be proud of the BBC.. it's truly unique. That's not even counting the freeview and HD free satellite we get that's funded from the licence. Certainly the libertarian in me fully understands the disliking of being "forced" to buy a licence, so it's a tricky situation for sure. I look at it like this.... "do I get the value out of that £140?".. yes I do. So the licence is a necessary evil.

I'm not ageist the BBC as such although for us there is only about 7 BBC shows we watch:
Doctor Who, Torchwood, Ashes to Ashes, Spooks Robin Hood, Merlin and Top Gear
That works out at £20 a season! more than buying the DVD boxset! That is why we buy DVDs you get more for less.
What I am really ageist is being forced to pay just for being able to watch, not for watching yourself. If you are physical capable of watching you have to pay, so I could watch the station by standing in the electronics store does that mean I have to pay, in which case why not just make it a tax at least don't pretend we have a choice
Anyway that's enough of that here, I'm making a topic down in the politics section, if you want to debate it more go down there,

Why bother with relationships if there's the chance someone will fall out of love with you? Why go out downtown if there's the chance you might be mugged? Why take a trip if you might get into an accident? To me it's not worth stressing over the "what ifs". There are so many things in life that might go wrong that I'd rather do the things I enjoy and deal with the problems when something actually happens.
If someone came in I'd be more worried about things that are difficult to replace and things like jewelry with specific sentimental value. Most of the things in my media collection are easily replaceable, and I would only feel the need to replace a subset of that collection.
To specifically answer your question, if I were robbed I'd make an insurance claim and receive the money to cover replacing most of it, and then use that money to replace some of it and use the remainder to upgrade my computer and home theater equipment.

Plus, who would spend the time to come in and steal a bunch of DVDs when they can easily go for the single items with more value and are easier to sell. Used DVDs usually don't fetch much of a high price.

Maybe we should consider a monthly "gaf style" pickup thread. So we can pimp our purchases rather than our whole DVD collections. I ashamed to say that my collection would eat up too much bandwidth (just thinking of all the *wasted* money makes my head hurt).

Done that, we watch them all as they came out but the 3rd extended one was just too long and the scenes didn't add anything, I would have hoped that they added in more scenes of them back at the shire but didn't think they would.
I also think Peter Jackson didn't want to do character like Tom Bombadil from the books, which is a shame as I liked those characters they made book lighter.
Still the extended films are worth a watch if you still haven't seen them and I think the first one adds in an important scene.
Nothing will stop me doing my 24 days, season 7 of 24 will be the first one I watch in one day for the first time.I can't decided whether to watch my friends recordings (with the adverts cut out) or to wait and buy the DVDs.
I'll buy the box set either way, I could never watch 24 from renting the DVDs it would be too hard to wait between episode but then again it's not the kind of series you can just re-watch one episode.

Back in the old days we had to wait a whole week to watch the new episode, and at would take us 9 months to finish the whole thing! You young whipersnappers don't realize how easy you've got it. <grumble>

I could wait a whole week to watch an episode I just chose to wait till all of them have been shown ;). I honestly wouldn't bother watching if I had to wait a week between episodes it would be too hard and not particularly fun.
Edit: I would say waiting till the very end was harder as you want to avoid as many spoilers as possible (it's impossible to avoid them all).

Some massive collections here. Between online renting and the cost of Blu-Ray I hardly buy any movies anymore, but to be honest I do enjoy not having the extra cost per month, and having the extra space. Great collections though, guys!

Yea I heard from a lot of people it was, most people agree that season 6 was a bit of a let down, it wasn't bad but we'd seen it all before, I'm glad it's moved to a new location (and the color scheme finally changed).
So far my favorite seasons have been 2 and 4, 1 (espaically because it was the first) and 3 were good.
