Wow, way to take a totally normal request and turn it into a political statement.

The guy was just asking of a favor (with a smart reason listed at that). Even though it will probably never happen. :P

he does have a good point with it, but that's why I listen with head phones... and since you know there is going to be cursing, don't watch it with children around... I mean who do you think would sponsor it is they did stop cursing so children could watch? Would we be over ran with GI Joes and Elmos?

The show was designed with adult content in mind, I think it should stay that way... Plus I work in an IT department at a company and what the guys say in my office on a daily basis is WAY worse than any podcast Alex and Kevin have EVER done...

A couple got through. It got slapped with an "Explicit" tag on iTunes ... so they said "**** it" and did the show as they want.

Its not like the show is riddled with ****, and ***, and *****. It is a show that talks like their primary audience talks. And that occassionally results in cursing, but when it comes down to it, it you think that the cursing is less than what you hear in a workplace lunchroom, then you must work in a church, and kids have heard far worse words in the school yard.

I'm not sure, but messing around reading interviews and watching them, I'm pretty sure that I've heard Kevin and/or Jay say that their audience is 18-35 year olds. So yeah, no kids there.

And do you ever watch public television? Lots of things on there have more profanity.

Mainstream or niche. Those are the choices. It CAN be a wise business decision, but rarely when you started with a niche. You become a sellout.

No, they need to keep to what they're about.

Tokenuser is absolutely right. The decision to not censor the show was made a long time ago, if you don't like it then don't watch. Kevin and Alex brought up the fact that little kids could be watching the show, but what parent would be soo offended by the language, but not enough to not let their kids watch a explicit tagged podcast? Personally, it doesn't bother me that they say stuff, and really their wasn't a lot of cursing in the recent episode. They just said cock a lot as it was relevant to the story.

Not everything in this world needs to cater to the kindergarten set. Billboards and signs on buses, okay. TV shows, movies, and podcasts? Absolutely not. Parents have no control over their small children seeing the former, but complete control over the latter. Quite making filmers responsible for the parents' job.

I really hope this doesn't sound like a bash towards Diggnation or anything because my life wouldn't be complete without it, but lets be honest:

If you want to see the cool stories they talk about its all on Digg and you can check the diggnation profile. Diggnation is about 10% talking about the story and explaining it, 10% giving opinions, and 80% about Alex and Kevin being themselves and being funny. If you don't like who they are then I suggest you don't watch the show. I know it sounds harsh but thats the way it is. These guys aren't exactly looking for the money all the time. They'd rather keep Diggnation what it is.

The point is that Diggnation is more of a fun show than it is informative. Without Diggnation the stories and info are still out there, but the entertainment isn't.

I hate all forms of censorship. I just started watching DiggNation and love it! So I have been watching the old episodes and was really PO'd about the censorship in some of them. The only way I think they could please everyone is to release the videocast with two audio tracks, one censored and the other not, and it would take up less bandwidth then separate videos. Plus if they could find a video format that had parental controls built in so only adults could listen to the non-censored track that would keep the kiddies safe.

It's not their job to make the show kiddie-safe. It's the PARENTS' job to decide to allow or disallow their kids to watch.

What next, taking the sex out of porno so it's kid-safe?

Some things are for adults. That's all there is to it.

You know, swear words are still words with meanings, and only the taboo of saying and the intent behind them makes them "bad."

Has anyone heard of "George Carlin's Seven Dirty Words"?

Shit, Piss, F*ck, C*nt, Cocksucker, Motherf*cker and Tits

Once upon a time those words were considered so filthy that they weren't allowed on TV. And back in 1939, MGM was fined $5,000 for indecency because Clark Gable said the word "damn" as Rhett Butler at the end of Gone With the Wind.

But, as time has gone by, half of these words have become mainstream and are routinely said on TV, and not always even just in prime time.

To many people, the intent behind the word is what makes them good or back. Sometimes I like a quick f*ck. Okay, it's an acronym for sex. But if I called you a f*cktard, it's an insult. Or take the work "jerk." You can insult someone with it or jerk or a rope. "C*nt" is still used primarily as a derrogatory word, as are "motherf*cker" and "cocksucker."

So as long as people give these words the power to be bad words, then they will be seen that way. But if you don't see them as necessarily bad and instead just as words, which is really all they are in the whole scheme of things, then they lose their power.

If we wanted censorship we would watch TV and not download web videos.

1. Got kids? Don't want them to hear swearing? Don't let them watch the show.

2. What kind of boss allows you to watch videos instead of doing work but doesn't want any swearing in it?

I think one of the best things about Diggnation is these guys act natural, like they would act if you were around them - that is cool.

Cursing or swearing or not, is not the issue for me, its honesty; and i value that so much in this show.

As soon as you start modifying their natural behaviour it adds an extra layer of seperation between the viewer and the 'cast'.

So yeah, if you dont like it: F$%k off!!!

I'm reminded of one episode where they received an e-mail along these lines, asking them to at least censor the audio version with dubbed-over faux-curses like when movies are shown on network TV. To which Alex answered, in dubbed-over, TV-movie fashion:

"Forget you."

Hilarious.

(Could someone remind me on which specific episode that event took place?)

phool
12-29-2006, 07:28 PM
i got it.. we as the audience make up new words or use other words that mean the same thing as the old swear words
for example:

"I think that churching a girl in her pudding factory would be fun with my friends"

then we can use them until they become mainstream, then we just create a few more.

Since words only have meanings because we give them meanings and use them in the context of those meanings, they are bad. words. grammarrr not working... overload

Its sad that in every community there is always one person screaming "stop cussing." Why is that just a spoken word can offend in such a stong manner. I personally think that in order for humans to move foward we need to stop all this silly banter about words offending people. Something is always going to offend someone, why make a few words add to that list? In closing I'd like to say that I doubt that Diggnation will ever censor itself, and if they do it will be a sad day.

Seriously, this is the internet FFS! If you want to watch something kiddie safe, stick to PBS. Its not Kevin and Alex's responsibility to babysit your damn kid because you're too lazy to. I swear, people like the individual that started this thread remind me of this ***** in wal-mart that told me to watch my language because I said "well that sucks!". (to which I responded with a good old-fashioned 'go **** yourself')

If you don't like the language, then take responsibility for a change and either close the player window or put on a pair of headphones![/rant]
