in episode 1 of the broken, kevin shows how to hack a wep encrypted wifi access point. I downloaded the specified iso image and found that it doesn't work on my computer. It needs a wireless card like one he shows, but mine computer is a ibm thinkpad t60p and it has a 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Express Adapter. Knoppix doesn't seem to recognize that device and requires a wireless card.

Also, I found out that the windows port to airsnort (the program kevin rose was talking about) called winairsnort turned out to be unusable. Is there any way to crack a wep encrypted wifi access point in windows without having to buy a wireless card?

Dude, just google it. Cracking WEP has gotten a lot easier in the last few years.

There is a much better linux distribution for doing this. Check out BACKTRACK on remote-exploit.org. For hacking WEP see the tutorials at the aircrack homepage. What wireless card d you use (Chipset)? Today youŽre able to crack WEP within 15 minutes. So just ask, what you donŽt understand. IŽll be waiting.. :D

The trouble is, many people who are interested in protecting their WAP don't use the old WEP anymore.

In any case, that broken episode is horribly outdated.

Oh, I wouldnŽt say that. I can only speak for germany, but 1 month ago a statistic said, that in germany about 50 percent of the wireless-routers are WEP-Protected. 35 percent are unencrypted and 15 percent with WPA. And no jokes about Germany at this point! In my freetime I do wardriving, and its still fun since I started in 2005

That's sad. using WEP is like hanging a sign saying "come use my network." Of course, you see these "Free Public Wi-Fi" Peer-to-Peer networking clients trying to lure people in from hotels and stuff. Sometimes free wi-fi isn're free.
