One thing you're definitely going to hear a lot of is Puzzle Quest and definitely for good reason. Elite Beat Agents is a great rhythm game. Lately I've been playing a lot of Henry Hatsworth which is a really enjoyable game that combines a side-scrolling platformer on the top screen with a puzzle game on the bottom but don't doubt it, this game will kick your ass, mercilessly.

henry hatsworth is good but freakin difficult… not for everyone.
Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass considered easier then other zelda games but i found it soo much fun, i like that it's kinda easier.
Advance Wars, i've got dual strike, great fun.
Final Fantasy Tactics A2, supppppperr hard, but fun, loads of grinding involved.
Professor Layton and the Curious Village, logic puzzles i'm kinda lame though if i can't figure it out i have to gamefaqs it.
Elite Beat Agents \___ my two fav games
Rhythm Tengoku /
metal slug 7 old school side scrolling shooter, pretty hard and pretty much a button masher
-Trauma Center i've got the first one, pretty fun.
-Warioware Touched great first game i ever got, mostly mini games

also Ninjatown - i saw it reviewed (http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3170975&p=39) on 1UPvideo here (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3170566) and looks pretty cool but i don't have it

I'll also recommend Elite Beat Agents and Professor Layton. Also recommend Chrono Trigger. And I have to throw in Phoenix Wright/Apollo Justice because I love those games.

I'd have to recommend Chrono Trigger as well. Other games I'd say worth owning:

The World is Not Enough
New Super Mario Bros.
Fire Emblem (forget which one, but it's kind of FF Tactics)
Puzzle Quest is good, but I actually like it on 360 better. No option to use directional pad sucks when in a bumpy vehicle.

Professor Layton
Advance Wars: Days of Ruin
Phoenix Wright, Ace Attorny
Ninja Town
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
Rhythm Heaven

May seem like an odd game for the DS... but Civilization: Revolutions is pretty awesome. I find myself playing it all the time whenever I'm bored.

I also endorse all the above games. Professor Layton and Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow are 2 heavy favorites...

Mario Kart DS and Picross DS are probably my favourites.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
Rhythm Heaven

Definitely recommend these because it just feels like they don't get much love for being new DS games. GTA loses some appeal because the top down isn't nearly as fun as the console ones, but it's still has its charm and works shockingly well on the system. And Rhythm Heaven is just too easily recommendable because of its quirkiness.

As for older ones, most of the best have said. I'd recommend again any of the Castlevanias.

One I just remembered and need to throw out there is Hotel Dusk.

One I just remembered and need to throw out there is Hotel Dusk.

Great suggestion (and if you like that, the same studio made "Trace Memory" before Hotel Dusk).

The World Ends With You -- This game is the first game, and really the only game I've ever played that feels like it could not have been done without the dual screens. It may well break your brain to fight on two screens simultaneously, but once you get it....it's tremendous fun.

Fire Emblem DS -- the GBA versions were more fun (IMO), but this remake of the original 8-bit NES game (originally released only in Japan) is a great introduction to the series.

Puzzle Quest -- Try to find the first one, and not the sequel. The gameplay mechanics are simple enough, and the gameplay keeps iterating on the concepts in fun ways.

Chrono Trigger -- I don't know if you can really call it a "pile of shame" title on my DS, since I played the game on the SNES way back when it was new. I still need to jump back into this one, but it used to be one of my favorite RPGs ever.

Elite Beat Agents -- I hope NoA gets around to making a sequel here in the US (I'm sure the two 'Ouendan' games they released in Japan are great, but I'm not huge into J-Pop), as this was the first music/rhythm game I really got into.

Prof. Layton and the Curious Village -- If you enjoy logic puzzles, this game has plenty of them.

Bangai-o Spirits - think of it as an omnidirectional shmup mixed with a puzzler that you play in 20 or 30 seconds bursts and has console slowing bullet counts.
