I used one I really liked back when I was in IT several years back, but the name escapes now. I did find this one with a quick search, I no longer is Microsoft products except when I am fixing client machines.

I also used a MS supplied driver to mount ISOs in the past, but I can't find it.

PowerISO is pretty good. Altough it does come at a price. If I condoned software piracy I would point you at any number of cracked versions you can find online.

I have to ask though - why do you want to mount linux ISOs in XP?

VirtualCloneDrive works great to mount images and is free. Although it can't burn or copy.

I get weird problems when using virual drives. my normal drive sometimes doesn't work properly so I just unpack the iso using winrar. its free and you don't need to install any virtual drives. this works if your just using the iso to install some software off of it.

+1 for Daemon Tools. This is the defacto virtual drive software for Windows. And they have a free version that is updated along side the paid version. It just limits you to 4 drives.

PowerISO is not free. If you feel like paying for ISO software than check out UltraISO or Alcohol 120% first. MagicISO does not appear to be free either.

I also use VirtualCloneDrive. It's been pretty good, but I don't ask much of it.

Daemon tools is the one you want, for sure. Freeware.....

MagicISO is indeed not free. However, their very simple MagicDisc is. It does not copy or convert or anything else, it simply allows you to mount an ISO. I've used it for so long I can't remember how long I've used it. Works great.

My objective was to overcome some stuttering playing DVD over 11g wi-fi on a little netbook. Mounting an .ISO as a virtual drive and playing it with VLC or WMP is flawless. Daemon Tools is elegant, light on resources (about 14 meg) and doesn't have to run at all if nothing is mounted. It's integrated into Windows Explorer. On install you have to avoid some of those tacky "use our toolbar, use our search box, etc." options - just stay awake to uncheck them. There are paid versions for more tricks that I don't need.

I personally like Deamon Tools. The only problem with the lite version is you have opt-out of installing their browser toolbar and setting them as your home page.
Alcohol 120% only comes as a 15 day trial, but they do have a free version called Alcohol 52% Free Edition which is basically just the virtual drive and their disc protection database.

UltraISO for me. I find with Alcohol and PowerISO, among others, it's really tedious to mount and unmount. There was one I installed that put in a big menu bar on desktop, Daemon I believe and othersputting icons in the tray. Ultra ISO is perfect - after install there is a virtual drive in My Computer, just right click on drive or iso to mount or unmount, without need of running a program, as with Alcohol, though I do like Alco.

Before Daemon Tools I used Alcohol 120%, great tool set but overly complicated and not a lot of updates for the price. I do like Ultra ISO. I remember when it used to use Daemon Tools for virtual drives. Now that it does that on it's own the only issue I have is that it does not (last I checked) let me use Imgburn to burn discs. I don't mind using CloneCD but I would like to use some of the popular free software and not paid software for everything.

DaemonTools++;

The lite version of daemon tools is all you need. I registered my image file extensions with daemon tools so all I have to do is double click on the ISO file to mount it. To unmount it, I right click the virtual drive and select "EJECT"

Don't have to deal with any applications.
