Lightsabers, phasers, and a hand gets lopped off to kick start the Film Riot series! The age-old bout of Star wars vs. Star Trek, has led to this mind bending, mind meld of a first episode showing you how to make your own light saber and phaser effects.

OK, so maybe I shouldn't be blowing our own Revision3 horn (too loudly, anyway), but I've been helping prep for the Film Riot launch in various ways for *weeks* now - but I hadn't actually *seen* the show yet, or any part of the show except for the trailer.
Folks around the office were talking about how funny Ryan Connolly and his crew were, and how well-done the bits were. But it wasn't until helping put some finishing touches on the launch JUST NOW that I actually made 10 minutes to watch.
These guys are FUNNY. and their timing is GREAT. Diction needs a little work, but hey, you can't have everything. 8-)
I predict great things for these guys. I think you'll like them as much as I did.

Oh man, this took me by surprise, I had completely forgotten about this.
My thoughts are that this is surprisingly funny.
It's shorter than I thought, but if they can explain the technique in that amount of time, no problem.
It's a bit technical (precomp?).. never seen/used after effects, but this show still intrigues me
Hopefully after effects is not required for everything that is seen on this show (will there be old school techniques shown as well?)
Awaiting new episodes!

This show was a gigantic pile of awesomeness!
Please, please do not change anything! You guys are wildly hilarious. I'm not joking around, I think you guys are genuinely talented in the humor department. That was the funniest Squarespace commercial I have ever seen! I think that was the funniest Rev3 show I have ever seen!
Excellent timing, excellent show, I will definitely watch next week! (And you didn't even need the subliminal messages :D).

Thank you guys so much for the kind words. The response so far after only an hour or so is overwhelming. We are all so happy you guys are enjoying it, and if Ryan wasn't asleep right now I'm sure he'd be on the boards expressing the gratitude. Well, maybe not. He's more cool and collected, I'm the overreacting freak out type person. Make sure you spread the word, and thanks again!

I had planned to abstain (being a fellow rev3 host and all), but seeing that I'm not the one breaking the seal, I feel safe giving a huge high-five to the newest members of the rev3 family. LOVED the first episode, and DOUBLE-LOVED the squarespace sponsor read! Congrats, guys!
(and on a side note, I noticed the full-sail reference. My Bro went to full sail, and later worked on Alice, Wolfenstein, doom 3 expansion, and the ill-fated duke nukem forever. Plus, I shot an appearance on "the dailiy buzz," shot in their studios!)
congrats again, guys.

I like it a lot, also wish it was a bit longer, but, I'm sure longer episodes will come with time. Looking forward to seeing the Full Sail stuff, I almost went there for school, but regrettably bailed at the last minute. Still kick myself for that. Looking forward to future episodes :)

Now THIS I enjoy. First CO-OP, then ROFL, and now Film Riot, I'm falling in love with Rev3 all over again. I feel like when I first started watching Diggnation over a year ago, then TRS, Systm, and Tekzilla, and its a good feeling.

This was a pleasant surprise. Not only was the show informative but I don't know that I have ever laughed so hard at an ad before (Squarespace). Revision 3 seems to be maturing as a network. It has begun to evolve from two drunk guys on a couch (nothing against Diggnation) to shows like TRS, and now Film Riot.
Looking forward to the next episode.

What a flippin' fantastic show that was. Seriously, you guys are the best thing to come to revision3 since the Totally Rad Show. Amazing work. If you keep the quality at the same level, you will see awesome numbers and you will be able to sleep well in that you are making an awesome product.
My one suggestion...and this isn't really to you guys (And it could be) but it would be awesome to have a slower (more in-depth) tutorial for how to do these things. I am super new to After-Effects and don't know all of the terminology so if there was some type of tutorial...that would be even more epic.
Anyway, I am so so happy that you guys are at revision3. Honestly, with CO-OP, TRS, Diggnation, Scam School, and now this....I am a super happy consumer.
Awesome job revision3 and Film Riot members.

It's a very good show and a welcome addition to the Rev3 family.
However, I think your tutorials go waaaaaaaaaaay too fast. I had trouble keeping up with your Phaser tutorial, and I had to rewind it a few times because I missed some parts. You have "Patience" listed as one of your needs, so how can you be when you're doing it in a hurry?
Just slow those down a bit and you're good to go.

Adds something different to revision3 but not like random you know?
I hope to see longer episodes but ya kno i could live with the shorter length too since i bet a lot of people want that quick watch show.

Made a forum account just so I could say how awesome that episode was.
I will echo what a lot of other people said about not knowing a thing about After Effects, but I'm not really concerned about it; I don't expect to ever actually try to do the stuff that's done on the show. It was just awesome to see the scene (which was hilarious by itself), then a quick little behind-the-scenes peek at what went into making it.
I doubt you'll need me to tell you, but keep up the great work! Shows like this make me love Revision3.

I freaking LOVED this show. Like others have said, maybe slow it down a little (obviously depending on the difficulty of the effect) but not too much, and make the show just a little longer (maybe have an "intro to After Effects" episode or something for those of us who are complete noobs), but aside from that, it was PERFECT.

I think that this is going to be the nice thing about this show. You don't have to be interested in actually doing the stuff in order to watch it. It's a sitcom and a piece of entertainment on its own without being interested in what they are actually doing/using/etc.
Love it and I love this show now.
And the sponsors were done REALLY well, I loved the squarepsace one, I'll watch that every week.
I like the subliminal messaging at the end too.
I don't have after effects but I already know how to do the lightsaber effects in my package (Adobe Premier Elements 2.0 - around £50) and other effects should be to hard to translate from one program to the other.
By the way I'm watching the squarespace sponsor for the third time now, the other Rev3 shows could learn a lot from you (even co-op)

Edit: Now that I've finished watching I'll comment some more:
I love this, I really do, this is everything I want from revision3! I've been waiting for this show, but I never even expected it to be this good!
It's funny, interesting, informative, just everything. I do have after effects, but so far, (seeing as i've only just watched it) have not got round to trying the effects, but I can say, that if you're going to show us how to do them. Just take your time because I found it hard to follow, even pausing it to just take in what you said. Either that, or just have the basic outline of how to do it in the show notes - that would be nice too so that I don't have to keep pausing the video (unless it's necessary).
Thank you! This has made my day. please continue to make episodes like this one and you've got yourself a no.1 fan! :p

Great show! I'd love to see one about the process behind animating your title sequence. It looks super-polished but still all After Effects (right?). I liked the effects explanations. For people who need more in-depth guidance on performing the steps there are plenty of resources on the internet for learning the nuts and bolts of After Effects. If you've done the tutorials on videocopilot, for example, the tutorials here will make sense and be fairly easy to implement. For people who are interested in saving time, it would be good to see an alternative approach to the lightsaber effect using motion tracking. Since the yellow tape popped so well it should be easy to track even with the built-in AE tracker. Or did I just accidentally spoiler a future episode? Keep up the good work! The cinematography and color correction looked very nice, too. What kind of camera/color correct tools are you using?

If the rest are this good. I think so.
The breakdown was fine, but definitely not for noobs. A lot of people say it should be longer but I think more detailed show notes would serve everyone better. That way it's there if you need it and it's out of the way if you don't. I can see plenty of people who won't be doing these effects still watching because they're interested in the process and it's just plain funny.
BTW I think this is even funnier than the past two ROFL episodes.

I don't think you can motion track a light saber, I could be wrong, even the professional companies do it frame by frame (well key frames).
I did try using a green-blade on the lightsaber prop, keying that out then using a revers mat of what I keyed out as the base for the light saber but it didn't work.
Edit: that last part was probably very hard to follow, basically I couldn't get it to work without going though a frame at a time.
Trust me a fight with two lighter sabers is horrible, I normally try to script my fights so lightsabers are used for the minimal amount of time and just have force push, pull and lighting the rest of the time, as they are really easy to do.
A cool practical effect of you want to have someone use the force to force pull there lightsaber off the flour is just to have then throw it away and play the footage backwards ;).

I just had to say that this show is pretty fantastic. I have dabbled a bit in After Effects and I've always wanted to learn how to do stuff like that, but I do have two problems that could probably be rectified pretty easily.
The first is that the episode is too short. I would also like to see longer episodes. The episodes would probably be longer if (problem 2) you explained things a bit more. I'm totally down with hearing a detailed explanation of what's going on, but when you don't know that much it sounds like the Micro Machines guy when you're doing the tutorial bits.
The whole show was pretty hilarious and I look forward to more. I will most certainly be using your coupon code if I ever sign up for Squarespace.

[QUOTE=kzap;524742]I don't think you can motion track a light saber, I could be wrong, even the professional companies do it frame by frame (well key frames).
You can motion track a lot, but:
1 You should throw two distinct strips of tape at the top and bottom of the "beam" to get a cleaner track
2 Motion blur is your enemy so it would help to shoot your footage at a high shutter speed. It's a cool look but you can also add motion blur with after effects (this however, can be complex and varied)
3 inevitably an end of the saber goes out of frame and then you have to roto.
4 Rotoing allows you to add better saber action like a widened beam when the saber is whipping past the lens.
5. Rotoing is simpler than tracking if you are new to after effects.

Excellent first episode, better than I could have expected. The most pleasant surprise that educational factor aside, it's damn funny, but I agree, this needs to be longer. I see this as Pixel Perfect for video, and the fact that I could enjoy this even if I had no interest in video editing and effects is just a bonus, but you guys are really doing yourselves a disservice by not going slower.
I plan to take a short course on AE, just so I can know the basics and teach myself from there, but I think you guys have to find a balance where people who know nothing about AE can learn from the ground up while those who know how to do the white mask won't feel like they are being spoken down to.
I wish I wash literally shown where to click for different things, as I am sure others would have liked. The "here's what you do" really could be more detailed. Keep up the excellent work.
And how do you do this show AND a movie at the same time?

Stunned by how good the show was. I don't see the need to make a "longer show" but maybe this length of show with maybe only one of the techniques. With more explaining of the technique in AE. This was incredibly funny and well written. If each show was like this, I'd be AMAZED it'd be the best show online by a mile. Unless this is a monthly show and there was plenty of time to write.
The show I guess could be a little longer, but there's no need to give us our fill. Keep us wanting more.

I was overwhelmed at the quality. (downloaded HQ QT) Looked awesome, crisp filming lighting sound, etc.
The writing was quick witted and smart, and the editing for humourous effect was superb.
I don't think it needs to be too much longer, just long enough for you guys to talk as slow as regular humans. Haha ;)

Which 35mm adapter are you guys using? Is it a Red Rock or Letus? I shoot on the HVX200, but actually favor the filmic noise the Canon's produce! And I'm with yah on the EX3, very nice camera though the 5D MarkII's pretty sick as well (with a shitty formfactor).

Yeah the 5D is nice, but the shutter issues keep me from ever using it.
I use the LetusExtreme adapter. Though in this the only time the adapter was used was on the Square Space ad.

Yah, 5D, GH1, K-7...so many DSLR/Still Camera choices for HD video coming! Are you talking rolling shutter issues like skew and strobing? Which is something the EX3's sensors will have issues with as well. We may be acquiring a Pani HPX300 here, which records raster 1080p in 10bit AVC-Intra...very nice! Smaller cmos sensors than the ex3 though :(
This is one of my new favorite shows on Rev3.
But either release like two 10-15 minute shows a week or give us one longer show.

Loved the lightheartedness of it all. The slapping pranks/bloopers at the end were the cherry on top of it all. Incredibly funny and informative episode.
I'd definitely like to see more of the two "actors" contribute to the film conversation from there points of view, to build a sort of character relationship with the audience. After watching it, I think the slim one was named Tom?

Cool Show can wait to see more stuff
By the way if anyone wants more tutorials check out Video Copilot

They have a cool preset that makes the light saber a whole lot easier.

Overall an amazing show so far. Nothing much to say, hopefully you guys do get into some classic stuff like the actual art behind it, but I'm sure whatever comes out will be great. Thanks for a great new show.

Wow! This show really came out of left field. Knew nothing about it, then saw it on the Rev3 front page. I thought it was going to be an in-depth discussion about the meaning of movies and scenes. Kinda like a Directors' Commentary, with anyone but the director. Turns out it is more geek oriented. I like that more.
I have to back up Brushwood on this, that Squarespace read, funniest ever on Rev3, by any show. Squarespace should pay five times what they paid for that kind of commercial. Who ever wrote it is comically gifted and the guys reading it made a top of the line commercial. Literally, I would vote that high on the list of Super Bowl commercials, if it were on TV during the game. Good pacing on the edit too. (I wouldn't blame you at all if you replayed this as the Squarespace spot more than once.) I am gonna watch again just for that spot.
Although I hope you guys didn't blow your whole load on the first show, if you can keep this up, you have been hidden WAY too long.
I agree it may be too short but, if it were longer it may become boring. I guess you will have to learn as you go. I mean, you give all of the info, you are entertaining, what else can really be done? Can't wait to find out!

...that Squarespace read, funniest ever on Rev3, by any show. Squarespace should pay five times what they paid for that kind of commercial...
I was gonna say something similar, the film riot guys and rev3, by extension, should get paid more for that spot, not just because of the work that went into it, but because it, without the rest of the show, could go viral, and make folks who never heard of squarespace aware of it.
I'm sure they can't make a new one every ep, but once a month would be good, get the show, the sponsor and rev3 the type of hits they normally wouldn't.

that has got to be the worst lightsaber attempt i've ever seen
seriously put some tracker marks on it...after effects tracker is abit on the suck
but there's a fix for that..dont use after effects...shake nuke come on ... if your going to VFX do it right
and dont go into film making if you like effects....a nice Computer animation coarse or compsiting classes will do you good.
also turn to system (rev3 show) to wire in some LEDs to the saber or just put some type of light source on the prop to cast light on the subjects face as it moves around....
I go to fullsail university and I already I dont want this show associated with it

Hey dbag. Its not a full blown tutorial. If you want an hour long version and something you deem worth of the full sail name go to videocopilot and stop being an ass. They took a somewhat mundane tutorial and mixed entertainment into it. I look forward to more episodes.

How about leaving feedback that doesn't make you sound like a complete douche??

Loved The Show :D
And for the hellbent88-I don't think that AF could track light saber...LEDs wouldn't make any different - because they would get blurry anyway.
And yes...AF's tracking suck ass-at least they are free 0:B.

Great show!!!
No, the explanations didn't go into great detail and yeah, for a more professional result Apple Shake or D2 Nuke would be better but the most important thing about the show was that it was actually EXTREMELY entertaining while still showing you the basic concepts. There's an easier way using Andrew Kramer's plugins for this (found at http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to/video/how-to-create-a-star-wars-lightsaber-in-after-effects-18741/view/ in the "Download project files here" link).
I do think a bit more explanation would be good but the humor infused throughout the show was superb.
Keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to more shows!

Suggesting the show use Shake, a tool that has been unsupported by Apple (sadly) for years, or Nuke, a high-end expensive solution to show a general audience how to do general effects is overkill and doesn't serve the viewers.
You out there throwing around software names like buzzwords should know first and foremost its not about the tool, its about the artist.
Finally. It's a filmmaking show, so I believe effects is only one aspect of the process they will be covering, but if it's the only aspect I still stand by what I've written.

Maybe slow down on the tutorial bit, but talking fast in the other parts of the show is fine by me.
It would be nice if the show was longer as well. We want MORE! :p

Ryan said on last nights bbliveshow that he will be using all kinds of different software, different computing platforms etc.
He said, to paraphrase, that he won't be slowing down the turorial parts too much because the show isn't really ALL about that. Show notes will be coming with complete instructions, and you can always rewind and pause the video to figure out what he was doing. He really wants the show to be about WHAT you can do, not HOW to do it. And he wants it to be entertainment as much as possible. You can watch last nights talk with him recorded on bbliveshow.com

Film Riot's first episode is pretty pretty good! Love the technical details.... I know nothing about film making and I insist that you keep to your high technical standards and don't dumb it down for me or anybody. And don't worry about the software requirements, the viewers of Rev3 can often get their hands on any software like After Effects through the pirate sites, in fact it inspires me to use After Effects. And.... The Square Space promo was completely hilarious, it was just inspired, they could not have had paid you enough for that!

great show...like so many have said before it caught me off guard too.
I like the fast pace, and it seems to fit your guys tempo...but I still crave the tech detail. I like the earlier suggestion of a screen I can pause on, but heck just posting good show notes with screen shots would work too.
Between you and PixelPerfect, Adobe should be jumping at the chance to sponsor some shows.

i too thought the show was awesome, liked the fact that the tutorials were short as i will not be doing that sort of thing due to not having a vid camera, still found it interesting though.
LIke the structure of the show, agree it could be longer. Really like the 'non-crib sheet' style of sponsor bits (like in co-op) breaks up the show and makes it unskippable.
