DO NOT - under any circumstances - allow your friends or the bartender to buy you a "mat shot." Designate a close friend scheduled to be more sober than you to get your back should your "guard" be down.

WOW!!!
I just realized in the USA you can't drink till you are 21?!?!?!
How did you survive that long?
Or do you drink before it is legal to buy alcohol, in the UK you can drink at any age you just can't buy it (rob, cheat and steal is fine).
Because I only drink Alcohol and caffeine. (Admittedly more caffeine than alcohole)

I hasn't always been this way. I bought my first *legal* beer when one m 18th birthday w/ my birth certificate.

You have to remember the car culture here in the the U.S. In European counties with better bus and rail systems, teenage drinking is much more of a family matter since drinking teens aren't automatically endangered. The perception is that teenage drinking leads invariably to teenage drunk driving.

The real problem is the morally repressed nature of a lot of American parents in society. Teens who are curious about alcohol are forced to do so out of their homes by stupid parents who think that abstinence policies are effective.

Instead of being properly educated in the homes about safe and proper social drinking habits, teens are being sent to college completely ignorant, often binge drink and end up in dangerous situations. Anecdotes of this dangers reach the ears of legislators eager to pander to frightened parents. It's a very old story.

Since teens don't vote and nobody wants to piss-off the anti-drunk driving lobby and frighten parents, we have to live with this preposterous drinking age.

The drinking age chased me. I was 18 when eighteen was legal, they changed it to 19 a week after I was 19 (too many 18 year olds still in high school, I guess) Then I was just barely 21 when it moved to 21.

It's stupid 18 yr olds can vote, fight and die for their country, get married, (and kids and all that implies) but they can't have a toast at their own weddings, graduation, Or return from war. Stooopid.

tea?!? tea?! You're a Linux geek like the rest of us. You should be drinking coffee! I hope you at least eat our favorite food -- burritos.

None of my coworkers drink coffee either. Must be some sort of epidemic or something. Just joking, tea is cool I guess, 'spose it's healthier.

The best way to stop drunk driving is to take a young driver to the emegency room and let them see the results of drunk driving. There are no words that can replace that horror in their eyes. Personally I never acquired a taste for alcohol. I have had to drive my share of adults home who were drunk. It does not take much to make a driver not as sharp, no matter what the age or body build. I think people who drink and drive should have extremely higher insurance rates. What is one life worth that was lost to a drunk driver?
Tea and burritos good! I prefer juice over tea.

I don't think the scared straight stuff works. I know people that were required to do it by court order and still choose to drive while intoxicated. Some people just never learn. :(

I know, crazy isn't it? then again all age limutes are, why are you able to do something one day when you couldn't the day before. That said, there has to be a cut off somewhere.

I appreciate your point of view. But, driving drunk isn't the only trouble a drinking young adult can get into. A person needs to develop a tolerance for alcohol and recognize that they're impaired. I'm not saying people should turn their teenage sons and daughters into power-drinkers. But, parents should accept responsibility of preparing their children for drinking in social situations.

The best way to stop young people from driving drunk is to have parents that can be relied upon not to be douche-bags if their children call them up for a rescue.

Brewed Tea (imported - the good stuff) - 7.5 mg/oz
Brewed Tea (regular US) - 5.88 mg/oz
Coffee (Brewed) - 13.44 mg/oz
Coffee (Drip) - 18.12 mg/oz
Coffee (Espresso) - 51.33 mg/oz
Coffee (Instant) - 7.12 mg/oz (and lets face it, who drinks instant??)

For reference ...

Coca Cola - 2.88 mg/oz
Mt Dew - 4.58 mg/oz
Red Bull - 9.64 mg/oz

(talk about mixing your measurement standards ... Americans still resist metric ... what next km/gal??)

Another factor to consider is that if you make the age too high people will just do it under age.
Everyone I knew at school started drinking at 14 and going to pubs at 16 (you borrow your older brother / sister / friend's ID) I never did that (I HATE social outings).
But children should have alcohol education lessons like Sex and Drugs ed. I think we had alcohol covered in our drugs education but not much.

Well I could be wrong I was going by sources like this:
Good point:
Tea actually contains more caffeine than coffee by dry weight but because more ground coffee than tea leaves are used to brew the drink in question, a cup of coffee contains a higher concentration of caffeine
Still I hate it in American sitcoms (AKA Scrubs) when they say "I've got coffee but I know you can't have caffeine, do you want tea instead?"
Anyway I have WELL over my daily allowance of caffeine in a day, I once had 18 cups of tea, 2 cups of coffee and 2 coffee shots* before 10 AM in the morning, bare in mind I did wake up at six and there was no one awake a free coffee and tea maker with instant access to boiling water - "Oh those church camp days"

* some thing I made up myself 4X instant coffee 6X sugar and a drop of water, you have a cup of squash on stand by to take the taste away

Earl Grey FTW!!!
They had it when I went to an editing studio for work experience, gosh that cost my family soo much, I love earl grey.
I had to go on caffeine free red bush tea for a while, that stuff is AWFUL I was going caffeine free for 6 months, it's harder than you think, you get into a routine of making cups of tea or ordering tea and it's hard to remember not to.

You are right about that, but I would do it before someone becomes addicted to alcohol to begin witn. Once the addiction sets in, it is too late. Back in elementry school the FBI came in and did a demo on drugs and what it can do to you. I never have touched the stiuff. There is a reason why it is called dope, You have to be one to use it.

They all do, they all do, one moment you are wishing someone a happy birthday the next you are traipsing through pages to google results to find out which has more caffeine; tea or coffee. And debating the benefits of age limits and the daggers of drink driving.
I've always wondered if I should make a new thread or let the conversation naturally evolve.

If we were to limit postings to a thread to strictly what the title indicates, then the conversation would be very stiff, limited, awkward, and short.

And, NO, that is not what she said! (cue banging of the drum)
