Console's have typically had a life cycle of 5 years (as in time on the marketplace) but recently companies have been talking about their machines lasting a decade. Could it be that they conspired together and agreed to make machines only every 10 years so that they don't have to deal with the hassles of launching a new systems or have other factors like being able to download from internet led to this development?

I hope they did, because it's annoying to upgrade every few years. Xbox lasted what, four years? PS2 is still going. No reason the current systems from Microsoft and Sony can't last quite a while. The Wii, on the other hand, is unpredictable... I'd rebuy an HD version, I think. Presuming some games I'm interested in come out, that is.
It seems like games on the PS3 and 360 are getting better each year by leaps and bounds. I don't think we've seen close to the best we'll see yet.
But alas, I expect Microsoft will bring out (announce, at least) new hardware in a year or so, in order to be the first to market. Brute force seems to be their way. Seems to be working rather well for them.

The xbox had GREAT looking games in its last year or so and even PS2 was still kicking out alright looking games near its uh downfall(its not dead yet but nothing worth while is out on it now)
I see PS3 and 360 just getting better as people use the power they hold.
I love that we have downloadable upgrades and stuff.
I do see the wii updating also tho...the graphics still hurt it honestly, so they might look into upgrading in a few years...
But like Dolly said I do see Microsoft annoucing something new at like next years E3 maybe...Then of course Sony would look into a new system(the PS2 is near death finally and sony loves two systems at once)
Bleeeh i always fall for their traps and buy whatever.

I was referring to handhelds also, I shouldn't have just used the word "console."

You know i have never been one to keep track of handheld life spans...Ive owned so many damn Gameboys...and i will be buying a DSi sooner or later if E3 shows something worth while
i guess PSP Go falls in that same area...But i do want a new PSP because mines broken.

I think the DS and PSP are fine. We don't really NEED much more than these in our hands, do we? Especially thinking of all the PSP does out of the box.. I like the hardware revisions, but it has taught me to wait and see what comes out in a year or two after launch in future generations.
I don't have an iPhone, and not a fan of touching (aka smudging) my screen, nor the DS' requirement to scrape and poke the screen with pointed objects.

I think the Xbox 360 & PS3 are still not being pushed to their limits. But the Wii needs HD. Games just look terrible on my HDTV.
Don't most console makers lose money on their hardware when it is first released? I don't expect any new ones to come out for a couple more years. Not in this economy anyway. Except for maybe handhelds.
Hey, BTW, 5 minutes have gone by...isn't time for another DS to be released?!?
