Episode 3: JV's State of the Union Address [Discussion]

JV was super excited to join the team of shows at Revision3. His first episode of JV's World (Mad at MTV) was met with mixed reviews. His second episode received higher marks, but there still seemed to be a group of people that were not pleased with JV's performance. Watch now as JV identifies this group, addresses them, and then gives them a nickname. JV talks a bit about Brian Brushwood of Scam School in this episode and the definite highlight has to be the call that he made to President Barack Obama for advice.

I enjoyed the state of the union. I think he should do this every 5 episodes. He's not going to go on the forums, so that can be his way of interacting with the Rev3 community.

I didn't think the production of the show was that much better, but I didn't really have a big problem with episodes 1 and 2.

I loved JV's shot at Brian Brushwood;:D that statue of liberty reference was hilarious. Also, I have to admit that JV is excellent at what he does. He really knows how to make certain groups of people furious. That's why it is truly futile to get angry with a shock jock; they will just use your rage as material for their next show.

I know that some guys on these forums have been waiting for a response from Revision3 and JV about the geek rant. Well, I believe that this episode was the "official response".

Lastly, JV needs to work on JV's World. Its simply too short for a bi-monthly show. I mean, give us at least 30 minutes of material for the two week span.

Gotta remember though that this was his first episode that hadn't been recorded months in advance. So besides the "rant" on his website, this was the first time he addressed the initial response here. I doubt he really comes back to this.

Wow, thats a pretty harsh judgment for any Rev3 show. I think Ep3 is vastly superior to Ep1.

The production quality of Ep3 is superior to the first two episodes. The jokes are funnier, and strangely enough, they involve the Rev3 community. Make no mistake, more work needs to be done, but I'm seeing improvement.

I'm starting to wonder if JV did research on the Revision3 audience. Even I know that there are powder-keg issues on these boards (which most of them are found in the politics section). Some guys can get bent-out-of-shape for weeks --- especially if Crumbles says something. (I don't have anything against Crumbles).

It is not difficult to get a controversy going with the Rev3 community. It makes me wonder if this community is a mono-culture of people who are easily offended. I was angry the first day after JV's rant, but I wasn't angry after that. I just really can't stay angry for 6 weeks straight --- especially if the source of that anger is the internet.

I didn't think the production of the show was that much better, but I didn't really have a big problem with episodes 1 and 2.

I know that JV was joking about Brian Brushwood but I wish he would have taken his advice, and yes JV made fun of himself.

Brushwood is great because he offers him self up to his community, of course there will always be people who dislike you but reacting to the 'hate' will only goner you dislike from people like me. Initially I didn't like Brushwood (his hair is just too much) but although I have never posted in these forums, I am aware that he made a joke about it and had a poll on if he should change it.

JV on the other hand decided to take the jokes from a couple of people who can't form constructive criticism and make remarks that look poorly onto him and onto revision3.
I accept this is JV's nature and that I can't change that, I watched the recent episode to see his take on this 'scandal' and admittedly I didn't know anything about it other than comments about it on twit (I think). But insulting your community (and fellow network hosts) and obsessing over a declared few rotten eggs is no way to get me to watch the show.

First, I wanna quickly address this argument you keep making about those who enjoy the show just joined up. First of all, new members is the point.

Secondly, you're just flat out wrong. There have been numerous long-standing members who either enjoy the show or are open-minded enough to give it a shot. PLENTY.

You delight in the comments that are negative and just skip over or naturally assume that the positive ones must be from new members. This is a classic case of seeing only what you want to. (Do not make the simple-minded argument that most of those long-standing members don't like it, I will agree that a lot of them don't.) This argument is insanely incorrect. I've been here less than two months, but have taken the time to watch some of the other shows. Meaning, there are always sets where people fall into different regions based on diffferent topics or ideas. Ever heard of Venn diagrams?

By posting on various topics, I've also learned a bit about some of the "older" members' personalities and what we do share in common and what we don't. For example, Rabidbadger who really dislikes (lightly put) JV's show, and I share very similar religious beliefs or lack thereof. But he and I will disagree on other issues, such as JV's show. Guytheninja and I disagree on the topic of religion, but I really like some of the music he posts and we also somewhat disagree on JV, but he is open-minded and is in the "???" category (as JV put it). There's a member who I agree a lot with politically, but we can't seem to agree on mixed martial arts. I assure you there will be things JV says that I disagree with and I also guarantee that I bet there are some things he says that RabidBadger would agree with. Stop trying to draw a battle line in something as fickle as sand! The argument of polarity fails.

I will not deny i hate jvs show ... i can't say i hate him personally i don't know him but the persona of jv seems to be less of a persona than who he actually is and that is what bothers me honestly its his attitude, its so unlikeable.. i like rev3 and their shows because the hosts are people you like and trust for reviews ect. and you could see your self having them as a friend ect. this is what puzzles me about the addition of his show ... i feel they saw him as someone with an audience and felt it will/would translate to new viewers ect ... i had no idea who he was before this show and on first impressions he failed. i even gave him a second viewing to be fair.

Oh, I stop watching at episode 2.
I just wanted to see what people thought before I watched this episode.
Then I just posted the question as to what his motivation for the show is if he doesn't like the community.

I would imagine his motivation is that he understands that the Internet is the delivery mechanism of the future and that jumping onto the premiere Internet network is a good idea if one wants to stay relevant. It's smart.

I haven't watched for awhile either (it's just not my thing, the reactions here show that JV's good at what he does), but the reaction to it has been interesting.

What I don't understand is why the haters are still acting like haters. If I was a hater, I would simply stop watching or post a message like "Meh, this guy couldn't insult his way out of a wet paper bag" and then stop watching. Statements of indifference and apathy would be far more damaging to JV than rage. JV thrives on controversy.

I watched episodes 1 and 3 and I don't like it. I'll give it chance to improve but to be honest, so far, In my opinion, it sucks. I obviously don't have the same type of humor as JV, because he's not made me laugh at any point in the two episodes that I have seen. (also, for the length of his podcast, this really should be a weekly thing).

I agree with you that Freddy got fingered is amazing - I loved that film, I also loved Anchorman - Will Ferrell Movie. To me they are hilarious, and I'm sure a lot of people agree, and some don't.

I guess we have to look at the big picture, a lot of the current Rev3 audience (not all) are that kind of geeky stereotype - i'd say that I'm in that audience - I have no problem with it, I do do other things than just sit on my computer for hours on end though. - However, if I had a career change, I'd probably end up becoming something computer related, and then I would lol
The New audience has come from listening to JV's radio shows etc. They have different views than some of the rest of us do, and I don't mind that. The best thing to do is just to try and get a long with the other audience, and try and understand their sort of humor. Fair enough if you don't like it! Just don't get worked up about it. Sure, you can give feedback, and JV and Rev3 can listen to it if they like, but who really cares? Your life is much more precious than just to spend your week checking the forum, just so that you can argue with people whether you like something or not - because in the end, JV's World isn't going to change the world, it's just a show.
Leave it a month or two, If JV's world gets a good solid audience, then cool, Rev3 has done it's job. If not, then maybe it will get canceled or something, in the end, not everything that's out there is for you, take what you like and leave what you don't and that's it.

Also, people might not have liked what JV said on his radio show, fair enough, neither did I really. In the end, if someone says something like that about you at your college or work or whatever, you don't start arguing with them for hours on end, or you shouldn't at least. Just ignore them! You've established that you don't like JV, so why keep complaining? Just ignore it and see what happens. There's always some sort of successful idiot out there that you hate, whether it be someone from work, college, school or the internet etc. but you just get on with it.

Here's the thing. 1st episode was ok, not my thing though. Didn't watch the second after paying attention to what was being said back and forth between JV (and his army) and Rev3 fans. Thought both sides did themselves no favours, especially JV with that audio clip. However, I read how things may change from this episode onwards and seeing as it was only a few minutes of my time I thought I'd watch. Turns out it was pretty enjoyable near to the bone comedy that had more hits than misses. Well done JV.

I honestly think there are bipolar personalities at work here ...

JV the character. Shock jock (meh, whatever, that is an overrated term ... he does FM breakfast radio ... far more shocking on AM). He thrives on controversy.

Then you get JV the person. He creeps in occassionally. When he does, and it interrupts his "shock jock" persona, its a little jarring.

His online (podcast) persona should tread carefully between the two. Radio people thrive on direct feedback. They know whats working or not by the way the panel lights up ... that feedback helps them know when they have crossed (or bumped up against) the line.

You don't get that online. Sure, you get the feedback, but its not until after the deed is done. Its going to take JV awhile to figure out where the line lies.

I wasn't referring to hometown as in birth. I was referring to hometown in the sense that his show is San Francisco based.

As I suspected. The two are VERY different things. Beating Stern ANYWHERE is an accomplishment, but leaving out the details that it was only in a few towns is pretty significant.

John McCain may have won in Texas, but guess who won the election? Even that isn't the best example, because John McCain is a household name. JV isn't.

I honestly think there are bipolar personalities at work here ...

JV the character. Shock jock (meh, whatever, that is an overrated term ... he does FM breakfast radio ... far more shocking on AM). He thrives on controversy.

Then you get JV the person. He creeps in occassionally. When he does, and it interrupts his "shock jock" persona, its a little jarring.

His online (podcast) persona should tread carefully between the two. Radio people thrive on direct feedback. They know whats working or not by the way the panel lights up ... that feedback helps them know when they have crossed (or bumped up against) the line.

You don't get that online. Sure, you get the feedback, but its not until after the deed is done. Its going to take JV awhile to figure out where the line lies.

I am looking forward to the entertainment. I think he can deliver (based on a couple of radio shows I listened to online). But its not ready yet.

It must be difficult for JV to have a 2 week feedback period, but I think he did read the forums. He got rid of MTV, and he made his show relevant to the Rev3 community. He fired a salvo at Brian, called "Obama" on the phone, and addressed --- well you know. No one can say he is not trying to address the community :rolleyes:.

I've also listened to a couple of his podcasts. He is far more controversial on his podcast/radio show. One of his favorite activities is calling up businesses on the phone and enraging the people who work there, and boy do they get angry! I'm surprised that no one has gone down to his radio station and threatened him face-to-face.

I am also looking forward to future shows. I will watch this show every week if he makes the right improvements.

god token get it right. wings are for rear traction on the bed not for speed. Your making us sound like losers.I had a wing on my '88 CRX Si (second owner, back in '92). Anyway, with respect to the bed mods, I *was* going to suggest adding a coffee can fart pipe, because the louder the racecar bed is, the faster its gotta go right?

The content was still lacking. This episode seemed like more filler than anything. A taste of whats to come. "Give me a minute while I write some new material."

The Rev3 Forums, in general, have been weak the past couple weeks (maybe it's just me i dunno)

In my opinion JV has absolutely NAILED his target audience.

I think JV needs to be WAY more brutal towards haters like ArcticFox, and then really back up the rest of the community. Turning the forums against the haters, kind of like this most recent episode.

Hell, I could watch a show based solely on that.

Rev3 really needs more edge, and I think JV brings exactly that.

I didn't care for his first 2 episodes, and hell his 3rd episode wasn't perfect either but JV the character is more than enough reason to keep watching. I wasn't even a fan of the show until I found all of this controversy, and GOD DAMN is this shit entertaining.

I am not overly fond of the recent turn Diggnation has taken, and TRS is starting to lose steam, but if this show can stick it out and start producing the material I know it can, this will be my favorite show on Rev3.

A word on this episode specifically - it was a huge step up from the first two. Love the new intro, poo jokes were a little childish. They would have worked if the show were a bit longer and they weren't the main focus of the humor. The only constructive criticism I have is that I think JV either needs a daily spot or 1/2 hour long episodes weekly for the show to work. The potential is there for something great.

Oh..and shwood is way too much of a pushover to pick on....come on man. You are capable of taking on heavyweights - you don't need to pick daisies.

I pretty much agree. His show needs some more work. And it definitely needs work in the content department. If you compare his podcast to this show; it seems like he is punching people with a large pillow strapped around his fist. I know he could be way more controversial and insulting than he is in this show.

funny story. I work in Chelsea new york (gay pride central) and these hot latin women come to my check out line (back when I worked in the supermarket). tools needed:

1. battery powered drill
2. gear oil
3. high grade silicone

late at night creep to the dickheads house

use drill to make tinly hole in the muffler

squirt copious amounts of gear oil into the muffler

seal hole in muffler with silicone

that car will start to smoke really bad from the heat hitting the gear oil

hopefully the dickhead will take it in and try to get it repaired.

chances are the ywill never figure out why it smokes, but leaving the car with no damage

I haven't read the threat yet, since I don't want it to influence me either way, so sorry if any of these points have been addressed.

Overall, not a bad episode, and he def. has potential to be decent. I won't say great only because I simply don't think this is the type of show for me. I'm one of the seemingly few people who doesn't like Howard Stern, and JV seems to fall in to that same kind of genre, so I may be a lost cause, but I will give him until at least episode 5 before I give up.

I liked the new intro, really glad he did that, it's def. much better production quality now (I realise the first two episodes were all done on his own, so I gave him slack for that), and overall he was very reasonable about his speech and you can tell he thought it all out.

I say it may not be the show for me because the humour itself is a lot more crude than I generally like. The picture of "the turd" kind of grossed me out, etc. Although, I did think the Obama thing was mildly funny (though the "spending money we don't have jokes" are getting a little old).
