I've got a weird one - the NEC DVD+R drive in my desktop has disappeared from My Computer. It's got an error on it in the device manager. Removing it and reinstalling it just gives a generic "driver can't be installed" type error. I tried NECs firmware updater but it wouldn't detect the drive. I reseated the IDE cable with no luck.

The weird part is that I can boot an Ubuntu live CD from the drive, and it works just fine. It just doesn't work in Windows XP.

I'd rather not spend the $30 on a new drive if I don't have to, but I don't know what I can do next - optical drives just don't have a lot of options and there are no fresh drivers to download. Any thoughts?

Have you installed iTunes, SonicStage or any such 'music management' software?

Such software will often install a driver and brake certain drives.

I did have iTunes installed a while ago but I uninstalled it because I never used it on that computer. I don't know if I've used the drive since then. I'll try installing iTunes and see if that changes anything, thanks.

Yup, that was it. I installed iTunes again and my drive reappeared on boot. Thanks!

Damn you Apple. Damn you right to hell.

Exactly why itunes will never be installed on any of my machines.
