Hmm.. not sure why batman was in this, other to extend the length. Anyways, I found the exploding head to be greatly disappointing. When relying on content from other places you won't always get a realistic effect... Cheap, yes.. effective? For a quick shot, sure.
Basically the exploding head was the same as the arm cut off in the other episode, except with throwing on a premade explosion and adding a gun sound. I would like to see cheap PHYSICAL stuff get made. Like burt says on pixelperfect.. it's not what you do, it's how you do it.
I did enjoy the arm break, that is definitely more along the lines of what I'm talking about above.
Again, I love the humor in this. These guys are natural. The girls -> boys, the awkward pause after the balloon on the noodle, etc. So enjoyable. I also like how the advertisements aren't just a prerecorded clip over and over.

I just wanted to say how much I am enjoying Film Riot, I had to keep rewinding because I was laughing so much. They even make the ads fun to watch which in today's PVR ad-skipping world is saying something.
Oh and longer episodes please!!

I really am loving this show, hilarious and informative.. what more could you want.. ? A longer show! :)
eminemdrdre00 do you have a sensitive gag reflex or something? This kind of gore is just funny. That arm break nearly cause me to spit out my drink as I wasn't expecting it :p It's not like 'Hostel' flesh slices, meat hooks and people drinking rivers of blood. I can see why some people would be averse to that, I am myself! But I'm fairly certain you won't see that hardcore stuff on Film Riot.

You guys are funny. Won't be surprised when you move to TV or Movies. Wouldn't be surprised if it's sooner than later. I hope you guys keep the band together, cause you've got something really great there.

Loved it again :D
Definitely one of my favourite shows on rev3 now.
The only minor complaints I have are:
1) It should/could be longer :p
and
2) although I found the head exploding interesting, it still seems like more of a comedy horror way of blowing a head up, but then again, I guess if you do it in a horror film kind of way, it's probably going to be dark, there's probably going to be a lot of changes of angle and fake blood too... (I'm no expert, but I'm guessing it's that sort of thing...)
Nice, another great episode, squaresapce ad wasn't as good but I'm glad they do a new one every week that will keep it fresh.
1) It should/could be longer :p
I don't think they can be remember they have more to do then any other Revision3 show, they have to do the sketches buy the props, do the tutorials and the editing all in one week. It's not like Diggnation with 2 guys sitting on a sofa.

It would be the same basic effect you would probably edit it a bit differently and yes it would be dark and a good effect to do is have someone watching and pop a blood full of fake blood just of camera where the head would be.
The effect they did was more of a Shaun of the Dead version.

Yeah, i will like to see how to do a physical head explosion, like making a head and then make it explod, but it is a nice and easy effect for fun and stuff!
It was fun and funny yet again, good stuff.

That's easy to do, hard to do safely and very expensive, you make a model of a head, or if you want a realistic one pay someone to make one and then fill it with explosives and blow it up. You might as well use stock footage.

Nah.. you don't have to make a photo realistic one.. just blow up some meat coming out the top of a sweater/t-shirt.. maybe with a wig on it. Then you mask off the face off the actor on the preceeding shot, overlay it on 'wigged meat'... then, if you can, shoot the explosion double speed (or more) go to a frame as close possible to where the meat comes apart.. then after that frame throw half the frames out to get it back to the right speed. Cut it together and you'll have yourself a pretty nifty gross looking effect.
To sell it further, if the character has glasses, put them on meat. And if you want to get your hands dirty you could use a side of pork with skin still on it and push in cocktail sticks to create face like indentation in the meat.. cut it open, put in some dentures. etc etc :p
Much more fun than stock footage. ;)

True but I don't think you will get any better effect then using stock footage especially if you are still compositing the face on, and stock footage is safer and cheaper.
Although that meat idea is good, how much explosive would you need, of course you could actually shoot the meat but then you would need a fake body and a whole load of health and safety forms.

Speaking on the ads, I actually didn't realize that the Squarespace ad was a commercial until they started talking about Squarespace... I figured that Tim was going to snap Josh's arm over that!

He probably did, of camera.
And yes Film Riot are best with sponsors, Co-Op is second best.

Awesome episode!!!
But I have to admit, you couldn't pay me millions to be a roommate with you guys. I mean the constant fights to the death between Josh and Tim, Batman walking around mumbling to himself, demon possessed computers, and Ryan Connolly..................'s evil smile (balloon around a pool noodle --- you know what I'm talking about).
I love your episode, but please, please don't visit my house..... I would like to live to see the age of 30 :D :D :D.

Another Episode.. Out of the park.. I was laughing the whole time. Plus the pool noodle was very interesting setup. Great all the way around.. Can't wait to start putting some of these techniques to use.

Doing effects in-camera on set is almost always more fun and convincing. With in camera effects you get things for free that you don't in post like accurate light, shadows, and perspective along with the tactile quality that just makes everything grosser.
Unfortunately, the real problem here is Film Riot can't show you how to make your own exploding head because then they will be sued by everyone who screws up the explosives part of the tutorial. :-P
Here's a link to one of the best exploding head gags I've ever seen. Note the reactions are just as important, if not moreso. Can you believe it's from a rom com?

Awesome job. I think I have a new favorite show on Rev3. They really chose wisely when they brought these guys onto the network. Not only was the entire episode funny, but was pretty informative too.
Personally I think the length of the show is fine. Any longer, like adding another effect, would make it harder to get everything done in a week. I'm sure it's hard enough as it is. And it's not super short for the content so that's not a problem.
Keep up the great work and I can't wait for next week.

I agree but I wouldn't call them in camera effects, practical or physical effects.
It's odd because I got into film making from a completely digital background and now mostly prefer practical effects.
Not all the time sometimes a mix works best and sometimes all digital does, a good film maker know when to use which.
lmao batman. hilarious. loved it

Hey guys, great show. Personally, I think you have the length of the show perfect - really well produced and funny. I love the tips - I think providing a 'how to' show can be overly criticised. In the case of visual effects, everybody trying to copy the effect will have their own film context and has to accept the tips for what they are....a basis to start from and get the effect right for themselves.
Here's a thought.
Maybe, a show based on lighting and camera set up would be as beneficial and important to users as a head exploding. FX are great, and have to be done well. However, its always worth remembering the other 99% of the screen time of a film requires subtlety of lighting to create the set up to make the FX work in the story. Erm, I'm digressing back to my film school days...you all know what I'm talking about. Keep up the great work ; )

One way to get a longer show without a lot more work is to invite viewer submissions -- veiwers trying out the ideas of previous episodes for themselves at home. Borrowing a page from Stephen Colbert, you can even supply some of the elements for the viewers to play with, like green screen footage.
This also has the added benefit of silencing the armchair critics. Let's see you do better.

You are joking right. I wouldn't think it was a bad idea apart from what has happened with TRS and the backlash ageist fan submissions.
Fan ideas could be submitted on the forums, I was thinking of showing some effects in more detail (if I ever had the time to make it) then only people who wanted to watch it could.
Padding out the show with submissions will mean you have the same length of 'show' just with extra non-show bits in (if that makes any sense).

That is an amazing idea though, just so viewers have the exact raw footage to try the effects on before they shoot anything them selves.
That would be cool.

Shit that was hilarious. Batman parts were funny and when he broke his arm for eating the cake was unexpected. Still loving to how-tos. Pretty much touched on everything I wanted to know so far and it's nice to have a professional and consistent tutorial resource.

I hope you guys DON'T make them longer, because as many have mentioned longer = harder.........(yes, I just realized what I said)....and that can take the fun out of it. Keep them fun and funny for you guys so that it shows on screen when we watch.

Show makes me laugh every few seconds. I love random batman, he should pop in eight episodes from now for two seconds. then never be seen again. until...
Anyway. What great hosts and actors, fun humor, nice vid and sound quality, fun starting point tips for new filmmakers. all around great fun show.

Not much to elaborate on, another revision3 show called 'The Totally Rad Show' (TRS) added fan submissions to the show and it's amazing how many people on the forum hate it, their have been loads of threads ageist them and even an online petition to get rid of them.
Here is just one of them: http://revision3.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28501

It could be something more like effects that people tried played at the end of the episode rather than bloopers. OR possibly used in-show for effects. I dunno.

when making this arm it is good to remember anatomy. if breaking a forearm there are two smaller bones in it.
