A thread for everyone to make suggestions/requests for the show! I figured this was needed...
1. Energy Blast: This is a familiar effect for viewers of shows like Dragonball Z. Basically, the user creates a ball of energy and then out of that ball, he fires a blast. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0tV9kVHJTY&fmt=18
2. Energy Ball: This is similar to the Energy Blast, but in ball form. Inspired by the effect made by Ryan Wieber (of Ryan vs. Dorkman) http://www.ryan-w.com/ryan-w/clips/energyball2.mov
3. Cloning: Simple enough, make it so that there's two of the same person in the shot. Possibly talking to each other or fighting?
4. Teleportation: Again, simple enough, make one person disappear and reappear somewhere else.
5. Matrix opening screen: Hard to describe, just look at this http://www.ryan-w.com/ryan-w/clips/camptrix.mov
6. "Obi-Wan Kenobi" Effect: The Star Wars Effect with the spirit-form of Obi-Wan... you know? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aIZZyIgpco&fmt=18
7. Star Wars Communicator: The hologram-y... thing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSALt3ZOtOk

3 & 4 can be easily done by cropping the video.
6 & 7 If you were on a green screen it would be easy.

I have some requests. At some point I think it would be neat if they did like an animation special. Get some people who work on hand drawn and maybe stop motion animation to talk about their craft.
Also would like to see something talking about camera control and tracking systems.
How to create and add convincing green screen backgrounds to a scene.
How to do good lighting.

Rocket/Big explosion? That would be neat.
Can you please cover the construction of a DIY on-rails crane? Particularly one with vertical leveling of course. The less expensive, the better.

I think an episode or 2 about actual production would be cool.
Where you buy lenses and what each are used for, how to build DIY rigs for shots, and general information about the equipment used.

I would like to see some of the editing side... like when to do double cuts or jump cuts and when to not do them etc.... That stuff seems more difficult..

I think the general consensus here is "more than just effects"
lol

More than just effects is on the horizon. Effects is just the kick off. Once Triune goes into production on TELL I will be showing everything that goes into making the short film, from script writing to editing and even festivals.

I thought a good quick but very important thing to talk about would be some of the rules of shooting like the rule of thirds, 30 degree rule, 180 degree rule. etc. I guess people could just read about these online but they might not be aware of the rules or their purpose. What do you guys think?

How about low-budget bruises and cuts? ...short of actually bruising and cutting yourself...

Time freeze! ...... Like that Philips 21:9 video or on Heroes. Be cool to see how that could be done budgetless. :)

I believe that is the same effect as bullet time (except bullet time has an animated bullet), I would love to know if it could be done on the cheap but I doubt it could.
Apart from getting your actors to stand still, running round them with the camera quickly and slowing it down, that's what I do.
Some actors our really good at just standing stock still in a pose, I think that is what they do on Hereos.

Nah... I bet they could. Smart people these :) Be a really good episode.
Maybe this is more of challenge.. but Jurassic Park-ish dinosaurs or some tricks to make it look like there are massive movie monsters hunting down Josh and the other one... now that would be awesome. :p

Film Riot you Are so Awesome, you have great tutorials and shorts. However I think it would be better if you made a tutorial on Camera and lighting techniques and how to use them in films, because these are the basics of making videos, and i dont know them.

Thank You, and you guys ROCK!

Would it possible to go a segment on doing a sort of mirror reflection shot? You know the sort, where you can see a person from a first or third person perspective in a mirror but the camera/crew cannot be seen. Obviously this could be done by just using clever placement of the camera/s but id like to see how to do it with a camera close to the subject. I'm guessing this would be easy from a first person perspective as you could motion track and then use the mirror shape as a mask or something? I'm just guessing really.
Keep up the good work.

that's probably one of my favorite special effects pieces ever, besides film riot of course ;)
I want to see some super slow motion action / bullet time, that would be awesome. Thanks
