So how different are these two programs? Or do they roughly work the same?

They are very different. Final Cut is editing software and After Effect is effects software. Though a lot of what I show can be accomplished on Final Cut as well as After Effects.

Yea I just use Premier (from the company that makes After Effects) it's editing software just like Final Cut. I can't afford and effects program at the moment, especially considering all the work I get paid to do does't need special effects. But I've found you can do a lot of stuff in the editing program (even light sabers!).

Ya, i have Final cut (which has Motion) but no After Effects. But like Kzap said before you can do alot. YOu can probably do anything you just have to be creative in how you do it. The effects programs just make it easier

Exactly. And Motion is actually a pretty good effects program. I use it every now and again.

So...if we want to thoroughly learn all of these bits of software....where do we go Master Ryan?

There are a lot of tutorials online for all of these programs, which is why I don't get to deep into their functions. Basically you can just google "After Effects tutorial" or whatever program you are using, and you should be able to find some good stuff.

After Effects is for both Mac and PC - http://www.adobe.com/products/aftereffects/?promoid=BPDDW

You could also use Motion (which is Mac only).

Another suggestion for those who want to learn Final Cut, After Effects, etc... is to check with your local community colleges. Many offer classes that teach the software, or filmmaking in general. And it's cheap too. In my area it costs $60 for a 3 unit semester class (16 weeks).

Yep one of my classes a few semesters ago was for final cut pro, would love to take it again to refresh and learn more about it.

I had no idea what After Effects was until I saw Film Riot and f'ing LOVED it! So I started looking for more too. VideoCopilot was the most in depth I found. It is a little more technical, but definitely alot of fun to watch.

Ryan, Tim, Josh and the gang, keep up the great work! I love your sketches, they're HILARIOUS!
