I need to reformat my brothers PC, because it doesn't recognize the restore CD.
Does anyone know what to do to restore it? I looked at www.killdisk.com but not sure if it deletes the operating system with it.

DBAN (http://dban.sourceforge.net/) will Do it for you, or else you can use a Windows 98 startup disk (http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm). DBAN (http://dban.sourceforge.net/) is easier though, at the prompt just type in quick and it will do a fast format.

Um... well, you'll need a Windows CD in that case. Boot from it and reinstall Windows. Since you don't have the restore disk, prior to that it's of course advisable to download all the drivers for the PC that you need and keep it on another CD or a USB key.

Alright I got it. What I ended up doing was reformatting it with KillDisk, and then I it rebooted and said something like "operating system not found" so I put the Windows CD in and rebooted and nothing happened. I found out that the PC doesn't boot CDs for some reason with the new Disc Drive. So i had to take out the HD and put it in my PC and restore and put it back in his.

Probably because you had the boot order set to HDD > CD. A quick peek at the BIOS would have corrected that.

Well it must not have been selected as a boot device at all because if the hdd failed to find a bootable thingy it would have fell over to the cdrom, ie press any key to boot from cd-rom..........................

I hope that everything worked out putting the hard drive on your computer, installing it with your hardware, and putting it in his computer after the install. Unless the machines were the same I probably would not have done it. I would have checked the bios out first, and started with a different optical drive in his next.
