I thought I would create a nice friendly thread for everyone to show off their avatar and profile pictures and get feedback.
I've just got a new one, what do people think?

I don't like it, it makes me seem less sophisticated than the old one (then again, I am).
I could easily change any of these (http://www.flickr.com/photos/36127494@N07/sets/72157618640903399/) (or these (http://www.flickr.com/photos/36127494@N07/sets/72157615133223747/) old ones) into avatars if people think they are better.

What do people prefer, an image off the person as an avatar, a cartoon or random image?

I'm all for anonymity on-line but I think a real photo of the person makes the posts seem more personal and friendly (although it hasn't worked with me).

I have to agree with you about the old image being better.

Personally, I've got no real preference in terms of the kind of image used. I typically just try to go with a picture I like that I think sort of fits with my posting style.

I tried using my face once but I am just not comfortable with it.
I am a big fan of games and this is the only forum I belong to that isn't games exclusive but I still want to sport a pic of a games I love.

Got another one, better than the last but not as good as my original one.
The best avatar images I can find are really old, my last avatar was about 2 years old this one is a couple of months.

This avatar of mine is my 'logo'. I drew it up to place in my Flash Animations (which I won't spam the link here), and it's stood the test of time. That, and there's just something special about avatars one makes oneself.

I designed my Av as a tattoo I never got, but still want to. When I'm not broke. ;)

It's a definite improvement.

Also, I just realized I never pointed out where mine came from. It's Plato from The Death of Socrates (http://www.pima.gov/publicdefender/Assets/Images/Misc%20Images/Paintings/socrates.jpg).

Studied that painting in art history class back in HS. Tis a masterwork. :)

I've gone with anti-avatar for awhile.
Can't find an avatar that is representative to fit my mood at the moment.

I used to change my avatar everyday but I got bored with that.

I do love it's composition. Of course, I'm a philosophy dork which helps.

I'm married to my avatar. Maybe I should have chosen a more generic name rather than a specific capcom character. :D

Not too shabby, but I must admit that I am more of an Archimedes fan myself. Archimedes was the ultimate mathematician of antiquity and one of the greatest mathematicians of all time. He may have been the father of the first mechanical computer, the Antikythera mechanism, as well. :D

Also his determination of pi was just insane. By using 96-gons both on the inside and outside of the circle he determined 3+(10/71) < pi < 3+(1/7). He did this long, LONG before the decimal system had even been invented. He had to use fractions for everything, and he had to come up with an estimate for the square root of 3 for the computations --- an irrational number.[1]

These computations were the arithmetical counterpart of running the high hurdles wearing a ball and chain. Yet by marshalling his enormous intellect and perseverance, he succeeded in giving the first scientific estimate of the critical constant pi.[1]

if there is a guy willing to discover the determination of pi then it is safe to say there is a guy willing to do all the hard work...just gives me reason to kick back and relax for the rest of my life and wait for the day they introduce immortality to humans

Mine is me looking over my shoulder at the top of a staircase, taken by the 8yr old daughter of my neighbor. I'm not sure why I'm lookng over my shoulder into her bedroom, but I like it.
