View Full Version : Edit Bay Computer Desk
Thought I share my current semi film related project with the group. Currently moving and will have a new space to set up as an office for computers and such.
I remember from a Revision 3 Gazette video from a long time back they toured the office and showed what their edit bays looked like there.
If I'm not mistaken they were using Biomorph desks (http://www.biomorphdesk.com/1-888-302-DESK/maxo/overview.html) for their setups.
Well they're expensive so I'm working on the DIY version of one of those desks. Found a good tutorial on the web here. (http://www.simplifiedbuilding.com/blog/2008/08/21/how-to-build-a-custom-ergonomic-computer-desk/)
Hope this is interesting but I'll also like to pose a question to the masses. What motivates you to get your editing done?
I'm hoping a cleaner working area provided by building this desk will help myself. I'm currently sitting on a 4 camera shoot from my a wedding from last November I can't seem to motivate myself to finish let alone start.

Them desks from Biomorph are sexy as hell!
I would love to have something like that and look into a new computer as well. I only have my laptop(MBP) but i think a new desktop and a place fit for it would allow me to get into more editing time.
Good luck on building your own desk..Not too sure how well that would work for me.
I bet I'd cut my hand off some how o_O

I am hoping to be home in time to help build one, or at least be able to help you build the one from the DIY site. That way when i make one for myself and christy i will know how to do so.

Maybe I am naive but at what point does a desk become an editing desk? I have been editing at my normal workstation for some time without feeling like I am missing something.

Couple things.
1. A movie I know VERY well and respect in terms of craft playing off to the side
2. Coffee
3. Deadlines
4. Rent
5. (AND MOST IMPORTANT) A good chair that helps maintain good posture and is at the appropriate level to the desk.

Editing desks tend to be extra long because of the amount of equipment (particularly monitors) an editor interfaces with. There also tend to be mid-size cubby holes for mixing boards, disc burners etc. They're built for heavy equipment, not papers and paperclips.
Do you need one to edit? No but you feel very pro if you have one, plus it makes you sexier to all the other people who may walk through, and in an industry that's built on appearance/image, that's not a trivial thing.
