Just coming off of my fathers' last infection following a surgery. I get a call from my Brother. His daughter, and my niece, has paralysis on the left side of her face. She had been in an argument with her 5 year old sister about something and she came to my brother crying. Scared the crap outta him as only half of her face was truly crying.
He asked all the right questions, Are you dizzy, is your stomach sick? He panicked at the thought of some kind of stroke or something. With our family history, it was plausible. He and my Sister in Law called her Doctor, and he said, after recent contact with Ticks, she most likely had Lyme's disease and Bells Palsy, is common. As the nervous system is a common point of Lyme's. Confirmed by the ER.
With all of the info I have gotten from people that know people that have this, what are this angels chances of a full recovery? Does anyone know?
It would break my heart and kill me to see her have to live with this the rest of her life. If I could post a pic of my three nieces i would. I am stupid, I just don't know how.
Meghan, the sick lil' lady os the one one the left.

Once upon a time, both Lyme disease and Bell's palsy were considered to be things someone just had to live with forever. However, with some VERY recent discoveries, the majority of patients are making full recoveries from both! Treatment soon after onset is crucial though, so the recent discoveries have limited effectiveness for people who got either years ago. It is recent for her, and her doctor probably already has her on doxycycline. Since it's something new, she will likely recover completely. Try not to let the permanent cases, the older cases, worry you for your niece.

I was diagnosed with Lyme disease last summer. The doctor put me on some medicine for it and I've since made a full recovery.
It didn't really effect me that much. I didn't experience any muscle aches or anything, because at the time I was on pain medicine around the clock from my shoulder surgery. So that masked a lot of the symptoms.

My friend had Lyme disease last year and although it sucked for a while for him and put him out of commission for things, he made a full recovery.

That's so funny, because I had no clue I even had lyme disease. The only reason I went to the doctor was because my lymph nodes under my arm were swollen. I figured my body was fighting off some sort of infection but didn't know what (I was worried my incision was infected). My doctor suspected lyme disease, ordered some blood work, and sure enough the test came back positive.

before reading all the responses your post had me on the edge of crying. I have a niece to and it would kill me if anything happened to her. but then the responses cheered me back up so keep us posted on her condition. and its easy to post picks. at the top there is a square with what looks like mountains on it. you click that and a dialog pops up. in there you post a direct link to your pic and the magic of the internet does the rest. it goes something like this

When I was really little I came downstairs and told my dad: "my eye is broken!" I ended up having Bell's palsy.
I recovered 100%. No issues at all. I don't recall if I even required any treatment. Of course this was 1985, so who knows if there even was treatment back then.
I talked to my Dad about this recently (within the past few years) and I remember him telling me he was really scared that I wouldn't recover. So, I feel you when you are worried about it.
However, maybe it will cheer you up that I had no issues at all recovering from it.
The jist of it is what is causing the Bell's Palsy? You say: "confirmed by the ER." but I'm not understanding what was confirmed by the ER. If it's from Lyme disease, then nerve damage could be permanent. So, are you saying Lyme disease was confirmed by the ER?

Thank you all so much. Your posts did relieve my anxiety about my Niece. I love that kid, all of them.
Aria, you somehow remind me of me in that your post had info that seemed to come from research. I did that too, but, you just don't know my family. Bad things only seem to become worse.
You are going to be a great Mom. Your kids will be fine.
Thank all of the rest of you. You made the wait better. My Niece, she is fine, she did recover fully.
Thank you all again.
Now on the problem of me. Those kids will never know about my problem. I will just disappear. They may only remember the healthy Waffle.

As bad as things seem they could be much worse.
Its bites its not fair but your still alive and so are they.
Last year my mother in laws liver started failing.
She basically went nuts because of all the toxins that built up in here system and then the hospital gave her a blood transfusion without filtering the antibodies out.
Which made it worse and she eventually dies.
I went in for minor knee surgery at the same time and developed a clot in my leg.
A few days later part of it broke off and shot through my heart and into my lungs giving pulmonary embolism .
Dumb luck kept it from killing me and i spent the next nine months on blood thinner to stay alive.
A month after this my better half was diagnosed with cervical cancer.. we waited a month to find out it was stage one and fortunately easily removed with a laser.
Just 4 months ago my better half was told she had neuropathy (immune system attacks her kidneys) again we got lucky and its mild and her kidneys are undamaged.
Hell i meet her 10 years ago during cemo for Acute myeloid leukemia.. i was tossing my lunch and went on a chat room and meet her...lol.
See no matter how dark and unfair things can seem there's always a end to it and many things still to be thankful for.
If you forget the good and only fix on the bad it well destroy you and you well miss out on some of life's special moments.
I basically the poster boy for just how unfair life can be and it just made me realize just how important the moments we have are.
