Hi guys, I loved the first show.

I currently watch all of my Blu-rays via my PS3 and also use it to stream other content using PlayOn.

I am disheartened that the PS3 cannot send a bitstream Dolby True HD/DTS-HD to my Onkyo SR-706. This limits my ability to tweak speaker-by-speaker settings. (And have the light display on the Onkyo saying it is an HD uncompressed stream)

What are some of the best Blu-ray players out there have bitstream output ability and also have ethernet connectivity.

Also wondering if you’ve heard anything about this being fixed via a firmware update or maybe included in the rumored PS3 slim.

In the meantime - will output using Uncompressed PCM still be better than Dolby Digital/DTS even though I will have limited ability to change volumes, delays, etc.

Thanks!

Try this. In the PS3 go to "Video Settings" and change "BD/DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI)" from "Bitstream" to "Linear PCM".

It is my understanding that it is a limitation of the PS3 hardware, so it can't be fixed.

Not sure why you would have limited ability to change those things, your Onkyo isn't that old. As near as I can tell, my Denon AVR-3808CI works fine using Linear PCM output from the PS3.

many people are disheartened about the ps3 it's a game machine after all playing movies was a after thought the player you really want is a oppo bdp-83 you will get much better video and audio if price is a issue get the sony bdp-s360 the ps3 can not ever bitsream dts-hd-ma or true dolby hd ain't got the chips for it, setting the ps3 for pcm is the only way to get not great audio but much better audio as the internal decoder is just ok but if you must use a game machine it's your only option you have to hear the dts-hd or dolby true hd tracks gamers will scream foul but hey they compromise on video and audio quality for the ability to play games. if your serious about the home theater experience then a stand alone player like the two listed is really the way to go.

Actually the audio quality is exactly the same whether your receiver decodes it or the ps3 does then sends it to your receiver as PCM.

Its the same because its all digital. The TrueHD or DTS-HD is lossless compression... kind of like a zip file or a flac audio file. All the ps3 is doing is "unziping" it to PCM and sending that to your receiver instead of having your receiver unzip it. While it would be nice to see the HD logo in my receiver there is absolutely no difference in sound quality.

Yep. Like you said, you may not have the logo light up on the receiver, but as long as "BD/DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI)" is set to Linear PCM, you'll get the full sound. I'm also not sure where dargo gets the idea that the video lacks on the PS3.

keep telling your self that game boy, the onkyo does a superior job decoding the hd audio tracks as for video try your game machine on a 108" screen then try the oppo it's night and day. ps3 did the job sony wanted killing hd-dvd time to upgrade now

You should do some research about HD audio because it is impossible for the Onkyo to do a better job decoding the audio.

"PCM is basically the digital master form of the film's audio before it is losslessly "zipped" into Dolby True HD and DTS HD MA. When True HD and DTS MA are decoded ("un-zipped" either by the player or receiver), it becomes PCM again. All three are essentially the same thing in the end."

keep telling your self that game boy,

Name calling? Wow, you appear desperate. I'm done with you.
