Today I am having a yard sale where I am selling a huge portion of my dvd collection. Its so bad I might even have to start selling some of my Batman and Star Wars collectibles. No I didnt type this to promote my yard sale but to ask...

Have any of you ever been a position where you had to get rid of some of your collection of whatever you collected or something that meant alot to you to make some money?

Saddly, yes, back in my early adulthood had to sell a ton of beloved CDs to a used music store to pay rent. :(

This might be a good email question for the show.

Have any of you ever been a position where you had to get rid of some of your collection of whatever you collected or something that meant alot to you to make some money?I sold some apple shares last year to buy a new engine for my car. I scrimped and saved so that I could buy them as a long term investment.

Not the same? Seriously - I think it is. Whether its an investment for pleasure in things that give you pleasure, or if it is a financial investment, selling because you have to and not because you want to sucks.

I am getting ready to move, and find myself giving things away (furniture, pots/pans) to places like Habitat for Humanity (I like them - they really help people get themselves together and break the poverty cycle). I hope that is adding karma points ... because until our current house sells, we will have two mortgages and be living on Ramen noodles (actually, no - I'll make soup or other econiomical meals instead, but it conveys the nature of our finances).

Yep selling stock is similar, not "beloved" stuff, maybe, but just having to rid yourself of anything to make ends meet just sucks. ... but still, the OP was wondering about "beloved" stuff. Like my whole U2/REM collection. They got me through a lot of mindfuck back in those days, selling them broke my heart.

We've had to get rid of all sorts of hard collected geek items in order to make room for the kids. My Warhammer 40k army was first on the chopping block.

I sold my original Xbox, as well as all my good N64 games, probably to buy some new Madden game or something like that. Woe is me, although I'm finally re-getting episode 1 pod-racer for n64 from a friend via ebay in a couple weeks.

Er.. not sure selling one old vid game for a new one counts. That's just "being broke (tm)" ;)

Selling the console/computer would count in this conversation, I guess.

Well it's selling something that means a lot to you to get some money, is what OP said. Episode 1 pod-racer is one of my top10 games ever, as is super smash bros, both of which I sold for less than $10 each.

k, if you love it, it counts.

but for what? another vid game? That's not sacrifice, that's "trade"

Getting to that point. I don't really have video games, but I might have to unload some comics or DVD sets soon. You gotta do what you gotta do I guess, though, if it comes down to it. No matter how much it sucks. D:

Trust me sugar. Do all you can to not lose what you love. I regret it to this day. I woulda rather have suffered the lack of comfort than to have lost some of the things I lost. (not the CD's, other stuff I loved and can NEVER get back) Think first, always search for other options, Make good decisions. Don't let $ run your life. Trust me on this one.

Oh man, this girl (maybe 13 years old or so) had a yard sale and she was selling The Wicker Man on DVD. I felt so sorry for her, although I'm not sure why. Maybe because she had spent money on The Wicker Man...

i feel you 100 percent.

I sold alot of dvds and it was kind of painful to let them go. Thanks to Jeff and his idea of not having to have a vast collection, I am not as upset as I thought I would be.

Only a few more hours to go and it looks like I might have to sell my Arkham Aslyum LEGO set on ebay to make rent :-\ which I got a couple years ago on sale at TRU on Black Friday. That will be painful haha.

Thanks for the replies!

During the age of Genesis I traded in my NES and about 18 classic games including a gold zelda cartridge, power pad and gun. Only got $18 for that all and still costed a lot to buy Aladdin. I say trading up is just as bad when you feel cheated out of it. I can never get that collection back now and can't find aladdin now cuz I do still enjoy it.

The things you own end up owning you. It's only after you lose everything that you're free to do anything
