So this past weekend, my girlfriend and I were hanging around at her place, having a bit of a quiet movie night in, and she popped in this movie called "One Week". An hour or so later, I had found a new favourite movie.
The movie stars Fringe's Joshua Jackson as a school teacher, burning out and wanting more out of his life. He finds out he has Cancer and has 2 years (at best) to live. He ends up buying a motorcycle and against his family and fiancee's wishes, going on a trip across Canada in the hopes that he will finally be able to see and do all the things he feels he has missed out on in his life.
While this sort of movie isn't my typical faire, I found it wonderful, funny, and both myself and my girlfriend found ourselves really relating to both Josh Jackson's character as well as that of his fiancee. It's entirely Canadian-made, with a soundtrack comprised of many Canadian alt-rock and folk-rock luminaries such as Sam Roberts, Sloan, Joel Plaskett, The Tragically Hip (Gord Downie makes a cameo in the movie. In fact his scene is one of my favourites in the entire film.) and many others. I would easily call this movie a wonderful homage and tribute to my "home and native land", and I encourage EVERYONE (not just my fellow Canucks) to seek it out.
In fact...Jeff, Dan, if either of you are reading this...rent this damn movie and thank me later, it's totally right up your alley. I'd love it if you guys mentioned this on the show too, because this is one of those little-known movies that really deserves more attention.
