I've been hooked since 9th grade; Morrissey is a God and I was so surprised to hear that Jeff is a fan!
500 Days of Summer doesn't open here until August 7th - so I've been gnashing my teeth since the 17th, though a theater about 90 minutes a way does have a showing...

LOVE LOVE the Smiths.
One of my favourite bands of all time.
Also haven't seen (500) Days of Summer yet but I picked up the soundtrack and She & Him's cover of Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want is pretty awesome.

+1, I've been addicted to them for the past few years and can't wait to see 500
P.S. Johnny Marr is amazing.

The Smiths were great as long as they kept Morrissey from getting preachy (i.e. Meat is Murder...can't stand that song.)

I'm a huge Smiths fan, I have a hard time understanding anyone that isn't. As an aside if you like the Smiths you should check out the Dears. Murray Lightburn the singer sounds quite a bit like Morrisey, and Morrisey likes them so much that he's toured with them. Check them out here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRSDFBBlGp4&feature=related

I'm 17 and I'm a huge fan of The Smiths. I was supposed to go see 500 Days of Summer today, but my friend canceled on me at the last second.

+1 for the Smiths. AND Morrissey as well. Drove to New York last year (or the year before) to see him 2 nights and then drove right back. (To South Carolina) Also saw him this year in Myrtle Beach, SC. Great time every time. I also was surprised when Jeff mentioned he liked the Smiths as well. My girlfriend is into most of the same things as me, she doesn't completely understand me watching the TRS podcast though. After she heard him say that, she mentioned how great he was. HAHA. But yes, 2 thumbs up for the Smiths.

Just an aside, I saw Tux mention how much he loves the Dears now. For the love of God (...or whatever you believe in) have a listen. :)

I do in fact love The Dears...however I'm not sure I would call their lead singer "The Black Morrissey" as so many seem to have. They do share some small similarities with The Smiths, but I also see influences from Radiohead, Bloc Party, Blur and Pulp

I wouldn't mention colour, I think that's pointless, but I think it's impossible not to notice the similarities. Murray has no issue with it and neither does Morrisey. The more recent stuff has only a passing similarity, but the early stuff it's impossible not to hear it.

I've seen 500 Days of Summer twice this past week and absolutely loved it!
I saw Morrissey here in Philly two or three months back; the show was incredible. Now I just need to see Belle and Sebastian, Sigur Ros, and Sonic Youth. Then I can die <3.
Just out of curiosity - for all of you Smiths fans - did you all take the Belle and Sebastian/ Joy Division/ Beat Happening trajectory? I feel like most people have a similar progression music-wise; I only have two or three friends here who really love the Smiths, and before we knew each other we all went through the same genres (give or take a riot grrrl or two).

For me it was more like Ferris Bueller's Day Off > The Dream Academy > The Smiths.

Not so much a Belle and Sebastian fan, but I LOOOOOOOOOOVE Joy Division. Actually, I started out listening to Sonic Youth, then The Jesus and Mary Chain (who are now my all time favourite band), then Joy Division. That being said though...I've been listening to The Smiths since I was a kid, 'cos my Uncle was a huge fan (still is too. He bought me Morrissey's first solo album as a birthday gift back when I was in high school), and then I saw "The Craft" and heard "How Soon Is Now" both on that soundtrack and on the late night retro hour that the alt. rock radio station here did. That song was almost a staple for them, along with Love and Rockets' "So Alive" and "Killing Moon" by Echo and The Bunnymen...They played those tracks almost nightly.
Also I agree, seeing Sonic Youth is one of those things at the top of my "List of things to do before I die"

This is the best version of the best Echo and the Bunnymen song out there

I would put this on par with the best of the Smiths.

I don't actually listen to The Smiths but have always been interested in starting and getting in to them. I'm super excited to see 500 Days of Summer and have been since I saw the trailer. Can anyone recommend a good place to start with The Smiths?

The title track notwithstanding, their "Meat is Murder" album is a favourite of mine.

heheheh, true enough. I guess I'm just at a point in my life where I really avoid the torrents unless I own it to start with.
edit: oh and to whom ever mentioned Echo and the Bunnymen THANK YOU!!! I've been inspired to rip this Never Stop video onto an MP3. I'd only really listened to it on video long before I had a PC that I could transfer it with. God this song is so sexy! :D

I started with "The Queen is Dead" - but I'd say that's probably one of their weaker albums. My favorite by far is "Hatful of Hollow". I'd absolutely recommend starting with that. Or if you start with Morrissey and work backwards - "Years of Refusal" is a pretty weak album, but it's very, very approachable.
I dunno - The Smiths were definitely an acquired taste for me. It took me a year of on and off listening to get really into them - but once I did I haven't been able to stop.
I'm surprised you don't love Belle and Sebastian! They're probably my second favorite band of all time; I love "If You're Feeling Sinister".

You're welcome, as always. :D
Incidentally, Echo and the Bunnymen have a new album on the way...seems a lot of old bands are coming back. I mean, Sonic Youth have a new album out, as do The Lemonheads and Dinosaur Jr. The Jesus and Mary Chain have been working on a new album since 2007 (If you watch Heroes at all, you've heard the first single, "All Things Must Pass") Mazzy Star are planning a new record, meanwhile Hope Sandoval has some new solo stuff coming out soon.
What's next? Is Ian Curtis going to suddenly come back from the dead for a new Joy Division album?? :p

I love the smiths... I'm a big Morrisey fan but prefer the smiths as a group. Charming Man has and will always be on my sleep mix.

There is a TV show over here where they hunt out little creatures and stuff, it's called Spring Watch. One of presenters, Chris Packham, sneaks Smiths song titles in all the time...

Brilliant!! bonus points to him for the Jesus and Mary Chain t-shirt (Best. Band. EVER.)

Jesus and Mary Chain had a couple of good songs but I always felt they were more hype than anything else... their 25 to 30 minute shows were a prime example of why they sucked as a band.
Joy Division no, but the later iteration of Joy Division, New Order continues to put out music. I must admit that the last New Order track that had me hook line and sinker was from the Blade soundtrack, but I like that they're still around.
Gary Newman is still churning out the music, and for the most part he doesn't really go for playing nostalgia shows (although he does do it), he's mostly about playing new stuff.
I'd love to see Dinosaur Jr. play a show with music from their 80s stuff, that was the Dinosaur Jr I loved.
Hateful of Hollow<Meat is Murder

For the record Hatful of Hollow isn't an original Smith's album. It's a compilation of singles. The studio albums are, chronologically, The Smiths, Meat is Murder, The Queen is Dead, Strangeways Here We Come.
Anyways, The Smiths are my favorite band of all time and I was super excited to hear them referenced on the show.
The song in the trailer of 500 Days of Summer, There is a Light That Never Goes Out, might just be their best track.
And Morrissey's first solo record is amazing. If your a Smiths fan check it out.

ironic that, an individual ruled by his Id befriending someone who is well, the complete opposite. Russell Brand is a sex addict, Morrissey wants nothing to do with sex...just odd.

you should have a listen to the russell brand podcasts when he was on the BBC, you can still find them out there. He has Morrisey on quite a few times. Morrisey is not the same man it seems. He has quite the interest in the female form.
