I like the show so far, and I absolutely love Robert's reviews of HDTVs and other HT stuff. The one beef I have is that he doesn't seem to promote the less expensive HDTVs (sub $2000 market). I (like most of America) don't have $3000 - $5000 to spend on an HDTV, nor would my wife let me even if we did. I would like them to review some mid-range HDTVs; I know there are some good sets out there. Thanks for all the great HT advice.

Suggestion - Building an HTPC (yeah, I know you already did that on Systm)

along that same line a comparison of the different HTPC software packages availible. Media Center, Myth TV, GBPVR, SageTV, Beyond TV, etc (there's more I just can't think of them now)

Just a few episode suggestions:

An overview of the new dedicated devices that are available, Networked Media Tank, Xtreemer, AMD Maui.... (what ever is new at that time) and of course build one from a specialized HTPC MoBo

The preferred method of connecting all the many sources in order to get the best audio and video.

Universal remotes, what can they do to simplify my home theater for my wife and how do I set one up

Keep a "recession buster" segment for each show highlighting low cost home theater components.

Setting up a HTPC to include PC gaming on the HDTV. Keyboard/mouse may be best for FPS but to play a platformer I prefer a game controller.

Build a home network with the HDTV as its it's central Video port. Include one by one every imaginable perifial (one per show) like a home security system, NAS, home environmental control, I'll bet you can star gaze for you couch if you wanted.

Thanks

High end Blu-ray players, is the cost worth it? Denon has a machine that lists for almost $2,000. What about a $600 player vs a $300 machine?

Reviews of surround sound receivers and speakers. Don't forget the less expensive systems as well.

Here is where the show merges with Tekzilla and things get complicated keeping the two show concepts separated.

i'd like to see them talk about room acoustics. proper use of dampening materials, bass traps, etc.

discussion on projectors (cheap, mid-line, and fancy) and using a screen or special wall paint.

discussion on projectors (cheap, mid-line, and fancy) and using a screen or special wall paint.I saw the smoke leak out of a projector that had been running 8 hours a day for 3 days. The bang was like a firecracker going off ... followed by the smoke leaking out. This was a mid-priced data projector (inFocus).

If the discussion is going to go to projectors, then room size gets important too. I will be setting up our system in a new (to us) house next week ... and suspect that a 60" TV might not be large enough for the viewing space.

A discussion on optimal size screens for room dimensions would be good. You might think that you can never have too big ... but that just isn't true.

South Park Season 12 Blu-ray. It's in 1080i and the interlacing looks terrible (tried in several players). Probably because they are solid colours and the animation is not smooth. It might be worth warning people.

I have quite a nice overclocked, water cooled computer. While most Blu-ray takes about 25-30% CPU to play back, this took 100% which caused it to jerk when played in a PC regardless of playback software or whether it was ripped to a hard drive or played straight off the BD. I don't know if this was just because it was in 1080i or what but needing LN2 to watch a Blu-ray can't be right!

It would be nice if this was confirmed and warned against on the show or just mentioned.

Have people send in pics of their home theater setups. Also maybe do some comparisons of the best places for free/cheap "HD" online. Maybe spotlight an HD podcast or HD webshow of some sort.

I'd like to second the motion for a round up or comparison of front end software for htpcs. MCE, beyond tv, sage, gbpvr, etc...

Everything in that list seems to be quite different to me. SageTV seems to be the closest thing to a frontend there.

Media Center, SnapStream Beyond TV and gbpvr seem to be backends (in that you plug a tuner card into the machines running them rather than streaming into them from an external backend)

Surely a frontend is something like XBMC (http://xbmc.org/) or just the plain old Xbox 360 as a "Media Extender" (Microsoft's name for a frontend)

Its true that XBMC is the only strictly front end piece of software of that bunch, but most of the others in the bunch offer front and back end services. DVR functionality, placeshifting, local streaming, basic media center functionality etc... Whatever you want to call them I think it'd be interesting to see some hands on comparisons as far as ease of use. Or even have an htpc segment where you could focus on different pieces of software or hardware. Plugins, hacks, tuner cards, remote control software, etc.

I like the HTPC idea a lot of people have floated here, but wait until Windows 7 is out or use the RTM version! Maybe review some ATSC/QAM tuners for windows or mac and linux if there are any.

Or better yet! Show us installing the ATI cable card equipment to a custom HTPC using the "special" BIOS, I guess you would need someone from the cable company though... sigh.

A comparision of video and audio quality of the streaming or downloading services such as xbox 360, iTunes, netflix, hulu (Well maybe not hulu).

Compare the service, a/v quality, price of Direct TV, Dish Network and one of the cable companies (which I guess would be whatever you have in SF).

Let's see some reviews of some audio equipment, from entry level to high mid range, which is what... $300 to $800? Maybe explain that audio is just as important as video quality.

How about a showcase of your home theaters? Maybe some tours of the local home theater enthusiasts in the local area? Or have some viewers send some pics and video tours of their home theaters?

For God's sake go do a live show in CEDIA, or at least have a show dedicated to what's coming up in the future from CEDIA.

How about pick some complete home theater sets within certain budgets? You know, tv, reciever, speakers, blu-ray player with set budgets: low, moderate, high end and then Bill Gates budgets.

I too would like to see home theater room design information... discussing room acoustics (what is ideal and what can be done about less than ideal), discussing room lighting (bias lighting and ambient light control), proper placement of speakers (including subwoofer... size & shape of room are variables), suggested viewing distance from screen, and I would love to acknowledge the placement of tactile transducers.

In my dream theater, I'd like to mimic a real commercial theater with a projector and invisible speakers with sound coming out of the screen. What is there to look for in front-projection systems and screens (with mention of acoustically transparent screens).

I would also like to get opinions/review on Mitsubishi's LaserVue and the "skinny" on Samsung's "LED" TVs.

I just remembered a few other items... control integration... Logitech remotes, Creston or other single interface control units to control all aspects in rooms... including the possibility of screen control and lighting. I realize that this will NOT be on the "Recession Selection" bit, but many of us are dreamers too.

There are two topics I would really like to see addressed on HD Nation.

I have approximately 200 ripped DVDs stored on my NAS in video_ts structure that I play in MCE. It works very well and provides me with cover art, cast and plot synopses, and searchability etc. My main problem is noise from the HTPC. Can you take a look at the Nvidia Ion computers such as the Acer AspireRevo in terms of performance and audio/video quality using MCE? I would particularly like to hear how an ion based system compares to the various media streamers currently available such as the Popcorn Hour systems – mostly in terms of audio/video quality but also in terms of the user interface.

The other topic I am interested in would be your real world test of the Hauppauge HD PVR for capturing HD material from various sources such as satellite or cable.

I'm enjoying the show and hope you start rolling up your sleeves and getting your hands dirty<grin>

Thanks.

I suggest minimizing the new releases section, since those lists are available online. Perhaps just briefly comment on new titles you've actually watched, and quickly review the sound and transfer quality.

I also suggest getting slightly more technical or in depth. I know Robert really knows his stuff, and I know he is pretty opinionated about what's good and what isn't. For example, obviously not HD related, but I know he's against real-time virus protection because it's an annoyance and hogs system resources--if you're smart, just don't download viruses. I'm sure he also has similar opinions on HD tech. I trust Robert, and would love to hear more in depth his thoughts on the HD world.

I sometimes get the feeling that sometimes when they're talking about a product or a feature, Robert is thinking "it's absolute BS" or "just a bunch of marketing nonsense," but instead he respectfully tones down his opinions. On the contrary, Robert, lots of us really respect and trust you and would love to hear precisely what you think.

Could you do a segment on stuck and dead pixels (what's the difference)? Is it possible for dead pixels to appear after a couple months, or if they aren't there from the beginning, they won't show up later? Do different methods to fix stuck pixels actually work (like applying pressure, or using software that flashes bright colors)?

Maybe you could kill some myths and give us some real facts :-)

Thanks.

I'd like to see at least one episode on front screen projectors. Explain which one should I choose for what room size. And explain all the jargon that goes with these projectors like throw ratios and keystone correction.

And I agree with the rest of the people who want to see an HTPC episode. Walk through building a MythTV.

I would like to see you guys discuss the Audio part of HD.

Choosing a good receiver, what to look for, rms? Whats a good deal?
Comparing 7.1 vs. 5.1. Noticeable difference? Are all DVD/BluRay movies using 7.1 now?
Listening to Music on 7.1?

Choosing good speakers. Wattage considerations? What brands besides Bose.
Is there a difference in speakers if using mostly for Music?
Use different Speakers for front left/right than rear left/right speakers?
How do you guys listen to your music? 5.1? 2.1 Stereo?

Fine Tuning HD Home Theater Audio systems. I've seen some come with a microphone that you place where you sit, and it automatically calibrates the speakers.
Does the THX Setup feature of THX DVD's have Audio calibration?

I actually emailed them through the show's email address asking for some advice regarding a home theater system that can give me THX level theater sound in a 10 ft by 10 ft room.

Ok i have heard Pat, and Rob talk about 5.1 positioning many times but they are always setup as if the tv is in the middle of the room. Now most of the setups that me and my family have, the TV is setup in the corner of rectangular room. Its just the way the house is setup. It is the only way that works. Can you do a segment on 5.1 speaker setup when not in a perfect middle of the room setup? I know i could just go of basic degree radius from the sweet spot but i honestly dont know if that is optimal for the situation.

That is just my suggest for a segment.

Hey Patrick and Robert

I just got done doing an update to my Insignia NS-BDLIVE01 (the Best Buy house brand) so I could watch The Ultimate Matrix. I could not turn off any of the special features. Anyways, it occurred to me that this player is jacked into the net. Why can't it go out and do it's own updates? Are there any players that can do their own firmware updates?

This also brings up another thing, is Blu-ray a completed spec or are we live beta testing? I know HD-DVD was said to be a completed spec.

Thanks

My LG BD370 does its own firmware and driver updates via Ethernet. In fact, it tells you that you can do it manually with USB or optical media but it didn't work at all for me and I *had to* use the Ethernet.

Blu-ray is a complete spec but specs get revised over time. I believe it is up to version 3.0 now or something. 2.0 added BD Live I think.

Good to see Robert on Revision3.

I have a 1080p Samsung 61" LED DLP (I know rear projection dead) and enjoy it very much. Now I've seen articles about a new non-standard 1440p resolution.

Robert, is 1440p for real and do you know if it will be added to the high definition standard?

Just want to know if I need to buy a new HDTV. Please discuss on an upcoming show.

There are 1440x900 TVs usually listed as "HD Ready" (at least in this country they are) because they can do 720p. I have had a 19" TV for years that used that resolution over DVI from a PC (Samsung SM940W).

Wikipedia (the most trustworthy source of information in the known universe) says that 1440p is a non standard resolution with twice the lines of 720p so I assume this is different from 1440x900. Presumably it is 2560x1440.

I had read a long time ago that the next iteration after 1080 was going to be 1600 but it would make sense for that to be the 16:10 while 1440 is the 16:9, as they would have the same horizontal resolution of 2560.

As far as I know, for what is actually used at the moment, everything is done in 2K, 4K, 8K, etc. I would assume that when something replaces 1080 in the home, it will be 4K as this is what the material is already in.

I wouldn't touch it with a 10' pole unless it is standardised but to tell the truth, I don't know who standardises this. They may have documents already available like the IETF does for their standards (RFCs). The best place to find out whether it will ever be standardised is going directly to the people who standardise it. You don't want to fork out money for a 1440p TV if it never becomes a standard and hence you never have any media that makes use of it. Even worse would be if it is completely passed over and the next generation is higher than 1440p and you are stuck only being able to play 1080p content on it.

The current standard for Blu-ray certainly won't let you use anything higher than 1080 so that standard would have to be redefined or you would need a different medium entirely. I don't see this happening anywhere in the near future so even if you did get the single Chinese 1440p device available today, at best it would just upscale from 1080.

Apologies if someone has already suggested it but would like to see something on wireless solutions for streaming HD around the home. I know there are solutions from D-Link, Linksys and there's the Slingbox products but they all seem to do different things and I'd like to know what's going to be worth splashing out on and avoiding the conversation with my wife that starts "you know that thing I bought that meant we could do x well we need a y to allow us to connect it to the other thing so that we can see it on the tv"

How can you not even mention Ken Burns' National Parks: America's Best Idea on the show. Considering it's free.99 on PBSHD over the air, it's a glaring omission from the show. Fix that.

This may be tough to cover in a future show... but attempting reviews of TV providers would be awesome. For example.. I am moving soon and thinking about getting U-Verse... but hear terrible things. It'd be nice to see a review done by experts.

Also, new to the show and catching up... so if you already covered it, my apologies.

I know you have enough cameras to pull it off, so I think the issue is finding someone with the right software to composite the raw footage into a red/blue master before you do your ridiculous 100-format encoding.

How about covering some products to make the home theater experience as close to an actual movie theater as possible. A few years ago on some home DIY type of show, they showed this really cool home theater that someone had built. There was a small ticket window and just inside a small hallway was a concession area with a popcorn machine, display case with Junior Mints, Red Vines, nacho cheese machine, etc.. Then you walk inside the theater part, and there were like 10 theater style seats and the floor sloped down towards the projector screen. The budget wasn't too high, just hard work and imagination. You guys could visit people's homes and let them show you what equipment they have in their home theaters.

I've seen AspireRevo Nettop AR1600-U910H at the local BB and noticed NVIDIA Ion LE listed in the specs. I've seen mixed reviews on how it handles streaming video from Hulu to a HDTV. I would like to see Robert & Patrick's review and thoughts about this box.

I want to hear the guy's thoughts on the new Zune marketplace on the 360. 1080p streaming with 5.1. There weren't any movies in particular that I wanted to see or wants to spent 6 dollars to "rent" but I tried an episode of a show and it looked great but obviously not blu ray great. I'd like to hear how it holds up technically by the experts.

It would be cool to see a comparison of various hdmi cables. Personally I have bought all of my cables from monoprice.com, with no issues at all. The ability to choose different colors and any size, while being low priced is great. I always wonder though if the cables are decent when compared to some higher priced cables such as monster cable, even though I know there has been some controversy over this brand....

I would enjoy to hear your thoughts.

How about, looking at low end best all round Budget setup you can get for your money, many shows are combining, different budgets, you could maybe have 2 or 3 shows, reviewing and talking about best budget, TVs audio, cables, hd providers, providers, cost, streaming cost, all areas of and equipment that is HD Compatible, etc etc, even compare to higher price setups etc...

Dunno if this has been covered, or if a area worth looking into again?

My wife wants a TV in the kitchen and one near the tub. Since we have DirectTV, I don't want to get another box to hook up for limited use. I was thinking of using an old monitor with HDMI and built in speakers along with a splitter to copy the signal from the living room. Are there any affordable means of wirelessly transmitting HDMI signals? Our house is fairly new and has conduit to run a long HDMI cable, but wireless would be much easier.

I recently heard that ESPN and Discovery will both have channels dedicated to 3d by years end. So, the big question is for those that are on the fence due to a really really old HDTV should we wait longer? Or will the price stay outrageous for awhile?

Also, if possible can we review the Internet Apps/Widgets that are available on TVs. What manufacturer has it what it can do etc? Would be something others haven't covered like that yet.

Thanks,
Chad

I'd like to see more reviews on LED tv's like samsung and LG's 1.2" tv's.

You could also bring up Clouding / Bleeding and if there are any fixes to them.

Had a aquaintance of mine get a samsung series 8 LED tv and he had some trouble with clouding and he claims to have resolved it by hanging a 20mm computerfan on the back end (its on a table stand)

Is the Roku box not really panning out? Seems like one gets a real bang for the buck but after the initial hype (from all the various tech shows I watch and listen too) there hasn't really been much in the way of follow up discussion.

Be honest. Is there something wrong with it?

I want to get one of these things but I also want to know which is the best right now seeing as the prices are pretty fair across the board.

Is the Boxee box the way to go? Why?

Why not secure a few review units and do a bit of a shoot out comparing these along with the newest popcorn hour one in addition to the higher end options.

It's just me but I would like to see an entire episode devoted to this topic.

I know on your last show you eluded to producing a show on building a HTPC. I think that is a great idea but I like to suggest an additional show or two to go with it.

The first covering the topic of Home Theater apps or shells. Not just windows mc but MythTv, OpenBoxieBox and such. How/can they be installed on a linux box?

Secondly an actual install and setup. For example have the home theater shell accessing home movies or music on a samba server. The PVR aspect would be interesting too. Can any of theses work with a Harmony controller?

BTW I never miss a show, great work, thanks

I know you guys already try to cover all tiers of equipment, from the super high end to the entry level but it would be nice to have a segment where you take a need, for example, a new HD monitor and approach it from three sides.

Side 1. If money wasn't an issue, this is what I would get.

Side 2. Money is an issue but I still want high(er) end parts.

Side 3. I ain't got no money but dude, my old monitor died and I really need a new one.

I fall into the second camp but I am sure there are plenty of people in the first and third camps as well.

I haven't yet seen all episodes, but I think HD broadcast has not yet been covered. I wanted to this over the web, but I have also never seen a service, or equipment to do so, maybe HD is too much for the web for live streaming? I am not very experienced in the field, but there should be some solution. The highest quality of live broadcast I know, would come from DV through firewire. I found an internal capture device called Black Magic, but I wonder if there would be a web service to go with that. Would you guys be the gurus in this, or should I head on over to Tekzilla?

You just finished covering your HTPC build. On March 31, 2010 a company call CetonCorp is releasing a Quad-cable card tuner for PCs. Think it would be great if you could give a product review on this. Their saying it should support Windows 7 Media Center. Think this peace would change the way people build HTPC.

So it appears that this year MLB.TV is out of BETA on the ROKU and will be in full support. ROKU also has added a few new models and other content channels since mid-2009. Any chance we can get a revisit into the MLB on ROKU? Or an update on the state of ROKU vs. BOXEE (on Apple TV or Mac Mini)? Differences in what you can get and best bang for your buck?

The 2010 offerings from MLB.TV are quite substantial it seems - available on ROKU and apparently somehow through BOXEE, watch live video with an app for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad ($15 for the app), and on your computer browser. Standard MLB.TV subscription is $100, and the premium that lets you choose home or away stream (and some other stuff) is $120. The price isn't "cheap" but it's not that bad for another out of market, displaced Mets fan...

I've done MLB Extra Innings on Comcast cable (Philly market) for the past two years and have been disappointed. They don't have HD options at all, the picture is 4:3 and looks awful (blocky, blurry and jittery) on my 40" Sony 720p/1080i screen, and their overall service is quite terrible. Honestly, the picture quality is about on par with a VCD that's being upscaled. YouTube looks better... If DirectTV was an option I could do (live in a condo that faces the wrong way for a dish) then I'd consider changing service. FiOS won't be available for another 10 years apparently...

FYI, the rumored pricing from IN-DEMAND for the 2010 MLB Season is as follows:
MLB Regular Season is April 6, 2010 - October 4, 2010
Early Bird (February 17, 2010 - April 11, 2010) $179
Regular Season (April 12, 2010 - July 11, 2010) $199
Half Season (July 12, 2010 - September 5, 2010) $139
Pennant Race Package (September 6, 2010 - October 3,2010) $69.00
Free Preview: April 5-April 11

This is something that you guys have not talked about, but it is a HUGE issue with WMC if the default settings are not correct for your HDTV. WMC black levels looked terrible on my Samsung HDTV, and it took me some digging around until I came across the following website: http://www.hack7mc.com/2009/06/fixing-media-centers-poor-black-levels.html
The problem had was caused by the dynamic range settings (0-255 vs 16-235). In my case I had to run the registry editor that set the WMC dynamic range to 0-255 (which is just the opposite of what is suggested on the link).

Great show, guys!

I'm about to buy a new AV receiver. There's now a sh*tload of Audio formats available, which ones are important and have market share? Which ones do I need to have on a new receiver?

Is there any advantage / disadvantage to getting the audio from the optical output of my monitor or should I run the Video from the AVR to the TV and do the input switching on the AV receiver.

I have a Vizio VF552XVT set with all those little internet thingies. If I use the AVR as my HDMI switcher won't I have to give them up? I like the Pandora, Vudu and Rhapsody on the tv.

Can I suggest you guys take a look at Screen Innovations' newest screen technology, Black Diamond.

We (myself and my colleagues) have seen these screens in action here in Australia on a low brightness Runco LED projector which clocks in at about 350 ansi-lumens "at the screen".
In a fully lit conference room I must say it was very watchable. Even during the darker scenes of the latest Star Trek flick.

Using a brighter 2000+ ansi-lumens projector, we have been assured by SI rep's that for under $10,000AUD (more like $5000USD) you can have a 100"+ DAYTIME watchable screen solution.
We are hoping to run an 80" SI Black Diamond screen in conjunction with the Vivitek 1080H projector. (Another sub $1000US FHD option [$3299AUD :( ]) Which in our honest opinion, out performs the Optoma HD20 in brightness, contrast and image smoothing.

Sorry for the machine gun info, but might be worth a look in. If your'e after some more info, please PM me.

New for 2010 more 1080 60p camcorders... but beyond AVCHD specs, computers ability to process well (Double the content of 60i) & beyond TV & PS3 ability to play it!

It would be awesome to talk about HD camcorders recording in 24p, 60p, 60i etc, whats best to record in considering CPU power, TV capabilities, playback etc.

Very much like the Logitech PS3 bluetooth keyboard and they are both nice IMO.

What I REALLY want is an illuminated and wireless keyboard that works like my remote. Touch it and you can see to type in a dark room, but after a few seconds - blink, off it goes. No how cool is that!

Suggestions for the show.

For the love of God, find the RED light sources in you ceiling and get rid of them. Also throw some black sheets over the foam egg carton, I understand thier purpose but they're creating visual artifacts in the downloaded medium that are burning my retinas.

Been a faithful viewer since Episode 8. I watch on the PC via iTunes as well as stream via my PopcornHour. Both medium handle the egg carton/red bulb combination badly.

I regularily watch a number of other Revision3 shows and have never had artifacting issues with the video. This is something specific to the HD Nation program. I honestly suspect its the egg cartons.

It's better to stick with a uniform background with digital TV. The more surfaces in the picture, the more compression artifacts you will get because there is more detail needed. I actually have to watch the show in SD because the HD version has way too many artifacts. It also appears on my screen oversharpened. It's sad watching HD nation in SD.

Been using a couple of Kodak HD camcorders (Zi8 and Zx1). After the 8gig SD Cards are full I've been dumping them to a hard drive and also backing up the raw files on DVD. Problem is that the HD files are not playing back smoothly off a DVD. Sensing that the bitrate must be too high for DVD media and drives. What should I be archiving these files to? Will BluRay discs solve the playback issue? or should I be transcoding the video to something other than the native Quicktime HD that the Kodak is using, and thusly defeating the purpose of recording in HD. Or is a Hard Drive the prefered method of storage? What I'm looking for is an old fashioned "family movies in a box" type of solution for the long haul. How can I get these HD files to disc and play them back succesfully? Thanks for all you know.

I'd like a comparison of Win7 MC (with Ceton tuner) versus Tivo. I'm dying to dump my Tivos and truly be able to watch my recorded content throughout my house and remotely (Vail). I've tested it using a QAM card and it was fairly rock solid. I'm just worried about how the tuning adapter will work with Win7 (using Cox in Tempe, AZ).

Hey guys I need some help setting up my DirectTV2PC. The software is still in Beta but it has great potential.

My system is:
XP Home Service Pack 3
AMD Anthlon 64x2 Dual,
Core Processor 6400+
4GHz of Ram
GeForce 9500 GT 1GB DDR2

I have a Samsung 720p TV hooked up to my PC via DVI converted to HDMI.
The stream coming from my Direct TV receiver is over my network and it plays
SD content but the HD content stutters and stops.
Click to watch sample Video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEP6gaXqafY

I want to upgrade my network with:
Netgear Rangemax WNDR3700 Dual Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router,
NETGEAR GS108 ProSafe 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Desktop Switch,
NETGEAR GA311 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Adapter by Netgear,
as well as Cat6 or 7 Ethernet Cables. What would you suggest ?

If you have DirectTV you should try this on your own system and
let us know your experience with the new software.

This is last justifiable reason to keep DirectTV.

Thanks, great show

PS where is Sumi Das ?

I would appreciate a show on front projection as I would love to know your opinion on how long front projection will be around for especially with HD moving to 4K technology and the hope that 3D is going to stick around (as I am one to think that 3D is a Fad, except in gaming).

Would love to know your current top 5 front projectors and since you guys love to kick-it old skool, would love to know your top 5 RGB projectors. Ebay has a bunch of old 3 gun projectors out there and they are a steal....if people think they are worth it from a quality point of view.

Love the show and the format

It would be nice if the guys would talk more about Windows Media Center, its Extenders, and some needed plugins for the program. I think a majority of HTPC owners use this software with their tuners to create a whole home solution.

"WiFi + Network Troubleshooting"
Why can't ISP, Wireless Router,& DSL gateways play nice with each other 95% of time instead of less 75%.
Please talk about some solutions like:
A. Is better to buy a wired router connected to PC and a wireless router to get better wired reliability? I just find that PC wired to DSL gateway is much better the Wireless Router middleman.
B. Update firmware or the router itself
C. Dial down the security protocol WEP and WPA
D. Channel switching

"Speedup a Budget Laptop/Netbook without new hardware & an OS"
Please tell us if the following are good or very bad tweaks:
A. Increase the multiplier for CPU,RAM

D. Plugging in 4+ USB devices(KeyB,Mouse,DVD Dr., Cooler Fan)
F. Running under 35 processes on Windows 7 Home Prem.
E. Which programs are hardware accelerated besides Flash 10.1, Win. Media Player & VLC?
G. Are hardw. acce. video encoder out their in the webbie?

I haven't yet seen all episodes, but I think HD broadcast has not yet been covered. I wanted to this over the web, but I have also never seen a service, or equipment to do so, maybe HD is too much for the web for live streaming? I am not very experienced in the field, but there should be some solution. The highest quality of live broadcast I know, would come from DV through firewire. I found an internal capture device called Black Magic, but I wonder if there would be a web service to go with that. Would you guys be the gurus in this, or should I head on over to Tekzilla?

Nevermind, I found out that Ustream can do this through the Ustream Producer program for the PC and Mac. Only you need a good graphics card and processor and fast internet connection if you want to do HD live. It's free, but it doesn't have too many options, and the paid version is pretty expensive ($200, if you need certain codecs, they are $100 extra), but it does a lot more things, mainly, more transitions and support multiple cameras.

I know this was originally an email I sent to hdnation@revision3.com but I'm trying to spread the news as much as possible... Go read, it sounds promising!

Howdy Robert and Patrick! I bring GREAT news from Texas!

I just wanted to start off by saying thank you for all you do for the tech community. I grew up as a young kid watching ZDTV which eventually turned into TechTV so I have been idolizing every person to grace the airwaves of those channels since then. Through your love for technology, you definitely have inspired me and MANY others to learn and grow in knowledge for the gadget-filled HD nation we live in today!

On a less mushy and more interesting note, I was up late looking through my RSS subscriptions and came across an intriguing article over at Boing Boing. The article quoted Judge Emilio Garza, a judge on the US Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit saying that you can break DRM if you're not doing so to infringe copyright! Yes, you read that right.. And yes, that means the 1080p Blu-Ray content we all have come to love could potentially become less of a controversy to rip for personal/home use. This issue deals with way more than just Blu-Ray movies and other kinds of media with DRM but definitely will have an impact on us geeks. Since Judge Garza was originally born and raised in Texas, I couldn't help but send this amazing news to you guys.

Here is the judge's exact quote:
"Merely bypassing a technological protection that restricts a user from viewing or using a work is insufficient to trigger the (Digital Millennium Copyright Act's) anti-circumvention provision... The DMCA prohibits only forms of access that would violate or impinge on the protections that the Copyright Act otherwise affords copyright owners."

Keep up the great work!

Hello. I was just wondering if on future shows, when discussing receivers, it could be mentioned whether or not they provide pre-outs. I stand by separate amplification but sometimes find it a PITA to find out whether a particular receiver in which I'm interested has this capability. Very few reviewers take the required second to specify this. It's even rarely mentioned in product descriptions. Thanks.

In addition to this, I would be interested to see what other receivers Patrick considered, what their plus and minuses were, and why they didn't fit what he was looking for. I think it would be quite informative to see Patrick's decision process for choosing devices.

Microsoft calls Media center an 'enthusiast' market, while google will release Google TV for everybody.

Those of us who know the joy and pain of running a HTPC need all the support and info we can get!

I'd love the guys to look into all the great media center plugins (Media Browser, Media Center Master, Media Center Studio).

The HTPC experience can be a glorious and daunting but watching HD Nation and all my Rev3 shows on the 52" instead of my laptop is a User-Interface joygasm.

I have been looking for a receiver for a few weeks and can't believe how many brands are under one company (ie. Onkyo, Denon, Marantz).

A couple of questions:

Can you give your staff the task of putting together a complete system (TV, Video, no restrictions, etc) with a $2,000 budget and then describe the results. It would be interesting in seeing what your staff would pick as they live and breathe this stuff. It would be interesting to see if they would pick similar components, etc. The only guideline is a setup in a small space such as a studio apt, etc. I think a ton of us dont have the big $$$ and would like to know what they would pick.

Have you/can you review the Sony KDL32BX300. Discuss the 720p vs 1080i argument on such small sets and the advantage of different manufactures picture quality. In other word; I want to know the 'best' 720p only set.

Also; whatever happened to the 'hypersonic sound' product that was announced way back in the day and never appeared. I thought that this technology was going to remove the need of the 5,6 or 7 speaker setups.

Patrick and Robert. You should do a show on the hacked firmware available for the WDTV Live Plus. I just installed it today and it gives many more features some of which requre it to be accessed via pointing a web browser at the WDTV. Also I can watch the Revision3 and CNET shows on it just like on a roku or popbox . See websites www.b-rad.cc and wdlxtv.com for more information.

I have used so many senseless hours at night researching HTPC’s, servers, NAS software options... potential hacks to use what i have etc. I think it would be great to have all the facets of revesion3 to pioneer a solid online DIY series for the typical consumer. Starting with room lay out, TV, receiver speakers, running wires, decent HTPC build (with old parts and new part options), a Server build and NAS, to SOftware and accessories. Each show could take on a portion and describe in detail what to do or how to do it. It would be very interactive and fulfilling to follow you geniuses and have a product at the end that i was able to create wit the confidence that it was done correctly.

Hi Robert and Patrick,

Love the show. I have two topics I would like to suggest for your show.

One is the recent FCC ruling that cable companies must allow subscribers to use any compatible set top box they choose and not be forced to pay for one from the cable company. This kind of mirrors the telephone and AT&T (pre-break up) where you rented your phones from the phone company and they all looked the same. This story was touched on briefly on CNET's Loaded podcast 10/18.

Somewhat related, would be reviewing the Sezmi DMR-1000 as a potential cable-cutter device. I've looked at many of these free-standing DVRs online but it seems like all you can see is a feature list on Amazon and very little about the user interface. So I really find it helpful when you run these thru the gauntlet.

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Guys,

I don't think I've seen you cover the homebrew firmware side of the set top boxes.

I've owned a couple of versions of the WDTV boxes and while they're superb out of the box they can be turned into some pretty primo devices with the non-official firmware.

Check out http://b-rad.cc/ and http://forum.wdlxtv.com/

And yes Rev3 is fully supported!

Popbox has had a lively community for quite some time over at http://www.networkedmediatank.com/index.php and it's hard to forget the various flavors of XMBC that are out there running on a myriad of platforms.

Something that's also close to my heart is kicking cable, I cut the cord with Comcast about 18 months ago and invested in a couple of Hauppauge 2250's and a MythTV setup. It's a little bit more hands on but a damn sight more reliable than those Kankers @ KomKast ;)

And, you can't beat free!

First off love the show, keep up the outstanding work. Don't know if you guys have heard about it but Vizio put some details of their new 3d tv on their website and you can even check out the TV's manuals, http://www.vizio.com/xvt3d554sv.html?form=success, and Amazon.com is already letting customer's pre-ordering, http://www.amazon.com/VIZIO-XVT3D554SV-55-Inch-TruLED-Internet/dp/B0045TYDXC/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1288487007&sr=1-1. Wish List - I think it would be awesome for Apple TV to stream 3d movies and 3d trailers.
Currently Cable Channel ESPN3d transmit in half Side by Side 720p and looks
great on my Samsung 3dtv. I'd like Apple to do the same.
Tivo Australia currently have some independent 3d movies and 3d Disney Trailers
in this format for download to Tivo Series 3 Tivo boxes in Australia to view on 3dtv's
I think Apple could do a good job a good Steve job in pushing the 3d band wagon.

Please make a segment on this on one of your shows.
as I'd like the masses to rally behind this idea.

Hey guys got something I've been fighting with. I've got Divx avi files that I've made to use on my PS3 and WDTV Plus. I've found a way to make art to the files in WDTV but I can't seem to find a good answer to it on the PS3. I want to be able to keep my favorite movies on my PS3 for when I go on vacation. Is there a way to add album art to these files that will work on the PS3? Or is there another format that I can add album art to that will work on both these devices? I would like to see more emphasis on Home Theater setups, my particular interests lie with HTPC and projectors. Perhaps I am an unusual case, my home theater is also my home office and I actually use my HTPC projected onto a smooth wall with special paint for work as well as entertainment. My current dilemma is in buying a new projector. I want to get a full HD experiance but I dont want to lose screen real estate. Currently I use a 1024x768 projector (NEC HT1100) and if I use a 1080p projector I will have a much better picture for my hd content but a much smaller workspace for my PC desktop and a smaller picture for my older content. It seems odd to me that in the projector space 16x9 was so quickly adopted rather than 4:3 with higher resolutions. Ideally I would like a 1920x1440 solution in order to be able to project full hd but 1600x1200 would provide better than 720p while still providing me a full sized 4:3 projection for work and SD. I would love to see if there are any comsumer priced projectors worthy of your review.

I haven't seen you guys give out your email address for questions that you answer on the show lately, so I'm gonna try this.

I'm finally ready to buy a Blu-ray player to go with my Vizio XVT553. I was looking at the WD Live HD network media player recently and remembered that some Blu-Ray players have DLNA or some network capabilities built into them now. After looking through some reviews I found alot of disappointments in the network media player capabilities. The BDP93 or 95 seem to do alright with it though. Price issue with those models though.
What is your experience with this feature on players and what would you recommend to eliminate needing to buy multiple boxes? I need another box or remote control like I need a hole in my head.
Looking for two boxes in one,
Thanks guys. Love the show.

What would be your recommendation for a good AVR? I think a good modern AVR would have good video switching capabilities, and good video processing to up-convert those older devices. Not everything uses HDMI - my Wii is, at best, still using a component connection, and I have other, older devices I still have plugged into my home theater. It would be wonderful if you could give us a couple of recommendations at different price ranges.

Also, what do you think is the minimum speaker setup for a good AVR - 5.1? 7.1? Even more?

Thanks and love the show - been watching since episode 1!

The TV Calibration segments were great, but only covered basics, which probably most of your long term followers already undersrtand.

What I would like to see is a short segment on the available calibration products (software and hardware) for Home Theatre owners, that want more than just using their eyes with a basic DVD product.

You frequently talk about colour temperature, and show the other more technical graphs, but never explain what products you recommend for producing and working with this information.

I did as I was told and asked this via twitter, but was ingored, and that was just a waste of my time....

I hope posting here actually gets a response....

I want more personal thoughts on ripping software that use nvdia cuda, foxreal bluray ripper is one interest even though it says blu ray it still does dvd unlike some im not sure of dvdfab blu ray. I would think something that supports graphic card tech would run more faster than a processor.
