This is easily some of the most impressive artwork I've ever seen, and I just had to share it here! He uses everyday blue ball point pens to make photo realistic artwork based of pictures of his friends. For something so amazing to come from something so simple that well all take for granted... I find it just stunning! The artist's name is Juan Francisco Casas.

The article doesn't say how he does it, but there's a popular technique where you project the image onto the canvas and then trace it. I's guess that's how he does it. What I really find impressive about this is the accuracy of the strokes and the different levels of pressure it takes to create different values, especially when working on such a large canvas. And not to mention the patience Crazily awesome. I use a ballpoint in some of my work, but not in the same way, and god knows I don't have the skills :p

Yeah, I'm wondering how he got the shading down with the pen, especially to mimic skin texture quite nicely. Most impressive! I think I'd go nuts trying to do something like that.

Wow, that's impressive. He must use super fine cross hatching.

Kinda along the same lines...A guy I work with does a lot of drawing with pencil and pen.

Here's an example:

It's amazing how they can get such detail and shading using only a single instrument.

Looks like something you can make with a photoshop filter...so if its truly drawn with the hand that gives it all the more credibility. great stuff.

He has quite the attractive friend/model/etc. I can see why he keeps drawing her.

Also, that is friggen fantastic. Being so utterly unartistic, people like this just blow my mind.

Haha, thanks - but there's no way I could ever claim that I can do this sort of thing. That said, it's not the kind of art I'm interested in. But again, even if it was, I probably couldn't pull it off.
