I learned quite a bit, especially about lighting green screen (the blue gel, separate lighting, and separation) and as an editor I appreciated that quick tip. Hopefully youtube videos see a sudden improvement.

Also, I came. Too much sex appeal.

Another great episode and great sketch.
Thanks for the tips on green screening, I've been doing it for 4 years now but I had to teach everything myself, I think I learned more in that one video than I did in the last 4 years. Hopefully my keying shall be much better now.

I'm really loving the 'quick tips', I figured out about cutting dialog a while ago but it was still I help, I really wish the podcast was around a couple of years ago when I was trying to figure all this stuff out.

Ya have to watch the whole show til the credits. Actually I end up watching the entire show 4-5 times during the week until the next Ep.

Best Show ever. The opening Sketch I Died laughing, She was epic, Best line ever, is when YOu steal the car and yelling for her to get in, the car takes off and you hear her yell "Rock N Roll" hilarious.

Awesome episode. Thanks for the tips on greenscreen and keying. Tried it on a very very limited budget a little while ago and it was less than stellar. This will definitely help.

I love the skits you guys come up with. They're hilarious and definitely need to keep them coming. And the little girl was amazing. I noticed in the credits she's got the same last name as Ryan and Josh. Sister? Daughter? Most of the cast this episode seems to be family, which is awesome that they're up to it. My family probably wouldn't be up to that.

Another great episode from one of the best shows of the ever.

She is my little sister. Since the show teaches low-budget filmmaking, I decided to shoot that way as well. So I just use friends and family for the most part. The only person in the show with any REAL acting experience so far has been Todd (the other Mafia guy in the netflix ad).

Expect to see a lot more of Emily though. :)

It is a licensed song from APM. I don't think there is anywhere that you can find it otherwise.

Thanks I was going to ask that very question.

Indeed. Although he should have been looking over his left shoulder ;)

Where was the fire used in the background (and foreground) from? Detonationfilms? or somewhere else?

Yeah great episode, funny stuff here. I'm one of those viewers that has absolutely nothing to do with green screens, filming, or anything remotely close to it.. but i like seeing this behind the scenes stuff.. actually mostly I think i'm watching it for the laughs. I've been high five/slap in the facing people all week!

It was actually from videocopilot's new Action Essentials 2. It is amazing! And only $100. Check it out on their site - videocopilot.net

Trying to do a cheap green screen in your dorm room, with less lighting than necessary, and then trying to make it work in post is a gigantic nightmare.
I spent the entirety of my spring break this year, in my room, painstakingly going through half an hour's worth of footage of puppets, trying to make it look clean enough to work.
Also I was using a really cruddy old mini DV camera, which had horrible picture quality on it, so that left a lot of artifacts in the footage.

Thanks for pointing out a lot of things I can do to make me want to hang myself less the next time I try to do anything with a greenscreen.

Did they add lyrics for the guitar riffs from MXC? or is that an actual song?

Yea MiniDV comes out horrible when I try to greenscreen, I find the best thing is to plug the camera into your computer through firewire and capture the footage directly.
Also when I had horrible greenscreens in the past I ended up doing the effect 3 or 4 times to remove each shade of green and then blurring the edges a lot afterwards.

Ya, I've never had a huge amount of success with Green screen, of course back then i had zero budget, literally eating Ramen Noodles for 6 months. (I miss those days).. Now days I'm just really waiting for a project that i may need to use it.

Weirdly as I get better at green-screening I seem to be using it less and less.
Every year I do a Christmas film with kids from the local church.
The first year we ran out of time, so shot the entire thing in one after noon on a tiny green screen and it looked AWFUL, I mean I was only 11 but still, I used animations from M$ clipart as the backgrounds. :o
In the most recent Christmas film there was only one short green screen shot that lasted less than a minute and looked pretty darn good, now I have finally seen this filmriot and improved my green screening, it looks like it won't be used at all in this years film (yes I do plan ahead that far).
Life's weard that way, I think as I'm getting more perfesinal in my film making I'm using less effects, I used to think the more effects you used the more pro you looked, now I just try to do effects only when needed and do them well.

I've just relaised I've been making films for more than 7 years.

Thanks to this episode, my hubby has become obsessed with getting a green screen to function properly. We made a huge one out of neon green posterboard, which is the closest we could get to chroma-key green. And we have multiple lights set up, trying to get rid of the "halo" effect around him, but we're still having issues, it's very frustrating.

He finally gave up and ordered an actual green-screen off eBay this week, so hopefully maybe that'll help. I'm about ready to just tear the damn wood panelling off our basement wall & just paint the drywall in chroma-green at this point so he'll stop bitching! :)

Question: with our lights in multiple positions, he's really well lit on one side, but on his other side we're still getting a halo effect when we try to key out the background. Any suggestions? I'd post a link to a clip, but I'm at work & YouTube is blocked. :( Is the secret to get one of your lights up high and one down low, to eliminate that? Or is he just having to fiddle with the opacity too much in keying out the green, and that's giving off the halo?

Specs: we're using our ghetto-posterboard green screen, a Canon HD camcorder, and as for lighting, we've got 2 of those yellow square halogen work lights from Walmart.

Also, how do you guys use bright lighting without going blind or melting? Seriously, he has to wear sunglasses when he's filming to keep from being blinded by those lights!

OK enough rambling. :)

Just noticed this recent posting:

Shows professional use of green screen in shots you'd never have guessed would have required green screen. Guess it cuts down on costs of a real location shoot.
