Just wondering what everyone's thoughts were on paying to get a picture/ autograph with actors and such.
I first saw this at comic con and have mixed feelings

I think it's a big thing with celebs at conventions. Some celebrities are cooler then others. A lot of times it's free to get a picture with them when you have your own camera. Then autographs would cost money if you had them sign stuff you brought or their pictures for sale. I know my dad had to pay money though to get a picture with Ray Park (Darth Maul/Toad/Snake Eyes). Though I guess Lou Ferigno (Hulk) remembers my dad from a con years back. But I think it really depends on who you're trying to meet.
I had this happen to me when I went to Anime Central in Chicago. Some of the original Power Rangers were there. I used my iPhone for free photos and then it was free for them to sign the convention program. However, the anime Voice Actors there were really cool and did it for free but had CDs and stuff for sale. I think they do it to earn some money because they may be actors but may not have steady work. I recommend watching the Wrestler to get an idea of what I mean.

I wouldn't pay a penny for a picture with any celebrity.

I think people who pay for pictures and autographs are nuts, but to each their own.

Yeah I'm not one to ask for autographs or take pictures with celebrities. However, in terms of charging for them at conventions I mean they have the right. Their time is money and I'm sure the arrangements they make with the con organizers ensure that they can sell their image or autographs so by the time you see them on the con floor just pay or move on.
But yeah personally I'm not impressed by that stuff.

They only charge because people pay.... plus there's ridiculous people who get them to sign 100 pictures and then sell them on ebay, the celebrity is well within their rights to take a cut of that. Just a shame that means that a little kid can't get a picture with some one they admire these days without ponying up the dough.

If you snap a pic of Lou just sitting at the desk doing other things, do they hassle you for 30 bucks? Or is it 30 bucks for a pic WITH Lou? Do you get anything beyond the picture?
I just don't see it. I get that he has the right to charge whatever people are willing to pay.. and I'm not willing to pay for it. I think it's different when I get something tangible like a sketch or something.

Just get in range, turn your back to Lou, hold up the camera in front of your face, press the shutter and then run like a god-damn sonofabitch... pardon my French. :p
Solved.

I'm of two minds on this subject. I've hit plenty of conventions and met every type of personality when it comes to celebrity and it just depends on how they are about the whole thing. I don't mind paying the person for a photo they are selling to be signed or for an item, but, I think that anyone that is pushy/rude/indignant about it is just setting themselves up for PR issues. They rely on pretty much their talent/personality for their livelihood and with media making the transitions it has been lately this may be one of their few points that they can exude control and make some honest to goodness cash.
Just remember that they have people ask for autographs and pictures pretty much every day of their lives and time=money so charging is just a screening method to keep certain jerks out of line and from wasting the person's time.
I have a hard time thinking of many people I'd pay much to have an autograph or a pic with... aside from the TRS boys. :) That being said, I don't mind it especially when I've seen the ebay hawks harrassing those people for autograph after autograph after autograph... I think that pretty much shuts them down since they wouldn't be able to make a profit and that's a good thing for sure. Also, I don't mind supporting people who make content that I love in whatever way I can and if I can get something out of it to boot (even if its just an auto or a pic) I think I'm cool with that.

Like some people have said, I think they have every right to charge for autographs/pictures with them. But personally, I think if I asked someone for an autograph and he asked for money, I'd no longer want to have his autograph. I'd be asking because I enjoy this person's work and want to commemorate the experience of meeting them, charging for it turns it into a product in my mind. And charging for a picture you get of the celebrity just walking by, especially at a convention, is crazy. If you're famous and you go to a convention filled with thousands of fans, yes, they're going to take your picture. You are in public. If you don't want that, don't go.
But then I've never been famous or been mobbed for autographs or had people snapping pictures of me all day; I can see how that would get on your nerves.

I'd like to think that any celebrity I'd actually care to have an autograph from wouldn't be one of these douchebags that charge money for it.
And I would never pay for one.

Neither has he.
Ohhh, bad joke, I'm a little ashamed of myself.
Shari Belafonte and Anne Archer were at my play tonight and then we went across the street to a restaurant for beers afterwrads and Jamie Kennedy was sitting there.

I feel sorry for celebs when the autograph hound is the e-bay seller. They are the ones who have 7-8 pictures and are basically asking for the celeb to work for them ("I need 7 signed from your last picture, then 5 more from your early work. What, you don' sign autographs for your fans? Asshole!).

In all the major cities we used to go to on my tour, we would have that. Pro's with a trunk full of hundeds of celebs headshots. Several times, it was a hotel employeee calling them to tip them off. We had 6 giant Wisconsin bread, chesee eatin, pale, wrestling fan security guards though. We always seperated those guys from the 'actual' herd and dealt with them personally and privately.

I am not a big fan of the pay for the autograph pic thing, that said I have ponied up. Anakin desperately wanted to meet Grant and Kari from the Mythbusters, and well, I have a crush on Tori, so I paid $60 to get a pic of the three of them autographed.
What is funny is that pic is sitting in a folder somewhere. I have a pic of Anakin and the three of them on stage together up on my living room wall and Grant autographed Anakin's copy of his book on Robotics for free. So go figure.
I just feel bad because like at GenCon there are a lot of kids and their parents and not every parent has a buttload of money to drop on getting Autographs for their kids, and when you have celebs that appeal to kids it almost feels like they are setting them up with the higher range autograph prices.
