I've heard that Hawkman is a badass. But I don't know which books are his best. Can someone give some suggestions?

Martian Manhunter is New Frontier was AWESOME!! Is there more?

Aquaman ... well, it seems his stories are old-school. Anyone have any suggestions for him? Blackest Night #8 doesn't count. :p

I haven't heard that Geoff John's Hawkman isn't terrible, but I haven't heard its awesome either. I would recommend that though because Johns is flippin' awesome.

If you can find a copy, JLA: Year One by Mark Waid and Barry Kitson features some Aquaman and Martian Manhunter goodness. Also, Morrison' JLA run (which is available in trade and is being collected in HC) features these characters prominently.

Sadly, I don't know of much solo stuff for either character that's any good.

While I've never had the chance to read it (I don't think it's been properly collected in a trade), I've heard that Jim Aparo's run on Aquaman was one of, if not THE best run for the character. The big problem with Aquaman is that so many people are down on him he tends to get treated as the dork of the sea or turns dark and channels The Submariner.

Also, while I have yet to read the Justice League International series, I've heard that there's some good Martian Manhunter moments in it. Manhunter seems like somebody who is often better as a member of a group, rather then as a solo guy, as I seldom hear anyone talk about any of his solo books.

Hawkman's tough. Save for Geoff John's run I haven't heard of any solo run of the character being amazing. Plus, as Conor has said in the past, he's the character continuity killed.

Of course you could always pick up some Showcase Presents volumes, but those are very Silver Age... especially MM, his adventures seem to get pretty weird by the second volume.

I just flipped through a great collection of old Martian Manhunter stories from the earliest days (I don't know when that was, 60s maybe). Soft cover, black and white, about two or three inches thick. Very tempting. This is the stuff that Darwyn Cooke had in mind when he wrote New Frontier. I considered getting it, but I just don't have the space for a big volume of Silver Age stories. But I did think about it....

I just looked up what I found at the store - I think I was looking at a Showcase Presents, Volume 1 or 2, collecting Martian Manhunter stories from the 1960s. Very tempting.

Yeah, if you want a bunch of old school comics on the cheap the Showcase Presents are a good deal. On average it's about $14 for around 500 pages. Black and white or no, it's a great way to delve into old school silver age stuff.

Also, if your still looking for Martian Manhunter stories, I remembered this old blog article. Basically, when DC's 52 series was going they had their backup feature suggesting a character's 'Essential Storylines'. Here, he looks at the stuff they suggested, then lists all of the important stuff they left out. Check it out.

Scroll down a bit, you'll find it.
