i have grayscale image that has been posturized into 3 colours. White, mid-tones, and blacks. I want to separate each colour into its own layer and am having a lot of trouble getting this done. Does anyone have any suggestiongs?

If there are only 3 colors in the image I'm sure a simple Select > Color Range would do the trick. It will allow you to select only the colors you tell it to, and then you can easily separate them into their own layer. I should be able to accomplish this with Channels as well, though I think the Color Range selection works well when you've got large blocks of solid color. You can adjust the "fuzziness" as well, which will essentially make the antialiasing more noticeable.

Hope that helps.
