View Full Version : DVDs on Blu-ray players with HDMI?

I got a LG BD 370 player (on a 37LG5010 TV) and it was all going well on a HDMI cable until I tried to play a DVD in there. Every time I hit play, it switches to the next HDMI up (so if I am on HDMI 2, it switches to 3) and when I go back to that HDMI, it goes back to the menu.

I actually had to plug in a composite cable, which looked terrible even for the menu, and unplug the HDMI to be able to watch a DVD.

I know that things like HDCP can be a PITA but is this really the way it is supposed to work? I have to physically plug in a composite *and* unplug the HDMI cable to play a DVD in a LG player on a LG TV?

Could it be that the two remotes, seeing as how they are the same brand, are conflicting with one another and one of them needs a change of address?

I've already tried that. It's definitely the player or the TV itself that is switching it. I tried both covering up the receiver so that the remote was unable to do anything and also tried playing it with the buttons on the front of the player.

On a related note, the remotes actually work very well together. There is almost no use in having the TV remote any more because the Blu-ray remote does 99% of what the TV remote does.

After some playing around with it, I can now view anything on HDMI 3 (the one on the side of the TV) but not 1 or 2.

If I try to play something on 1 it switches to 2, if I try to play something on 2 it switches to 1. When I try to switch back to one that is already playing it stops.

This happens for DVDs, data DVDs with video files on them and even full blown Blu-rays.

I tried factory resetting both the TV and the Blu-ray player.

Would HDMI 3 be different in some way from 1 or 2? HDMI 1 has "DVI" written on it but the rest just say "HDMI 2/3". For example, would 3 not have HDCP? This is the only reason I can think of that it won't play on anything but 3 but if that is the case, why won't full blown retail Blu-ray movies from the shop play on them?

If it doesn't have HDCP and that is why it is only working on 3, it is at least a lot better than the composite cable but is it still full quality 1080p and so on or is it reduced?

I wouldn't think HDMI 1 or 2 would be any different than HDMI 3 other than their location. Does the OSD have the current display resolution? Does your LG TV have upgradable firmware? Perhaps one is available that might address this issue. Have you tried contacting LG tech support?

Sorry, more questions than answers, but I've run out of ideas.
