i've tried zonealarm and comodo i didn't really like comodo so i went back to zonealarm. I'm no that happy as i think it freezes up after a while. what does everyone else use. I previously used norton but that's pretty shockingly bad.

I travel a lot, so my laptop (which contains contract and proposal submission information) gets connected to all sorts of public networks in hotels, airports, coffee shops, etc. All I have on my laptop is the stock standard MS Firewall that comes with XP. Its fine, and takes few system resources. I also have a antivirus and antispyware apps installed. Between the three, my machine is pretty secure - especially since it pops on/off networks in different locations fairly regularly.

BUT, when I am at home, I use the firewall built into my router. A hardware firewall will always be better than a software based one.

Just don't go overboard. If you are practicing "safe net", then commonsense will stopped you from being hacked ... and when it comes down to it, why would anyone target your machine anyway? Do you have a particulalry awesome stash of porn or MP3s loaded??

Agreed, Sygate is the one I now use after dumping ZoneAlarm years ago...

Sygate is the best. Since norton bought it, there havent been any updates. But there hasnt been anything that needs fixing either. There's literally like 4 minor bugs or something. IE 7 fully updated has more major bugs for example :p

you wanna get real geeky, setup a linux box as your firewall, then you can use iptables or other free firewalls that are out there for it. Works great! and you dont need a crazy machine to run it.
