Just saying this first: Veronica, like your hair - great highlights!

Agreed it looked very nice!

Just got done watching the episode! and now leaving for the Rifftack show to see more Veronica and others! Also I think show should start with Veronica singing what the show is about with her Stevie Nicks voice all the time now ;)

Literally am in the middle of backing up. Paused the show because Patrick Norton said so.

Is the 2.5 mm jack strictly stereo audio out like a headphone jack or a combined mic in and stereo audio out for phone calls?

If the jack is just used for headphones, isn't there an audio adapter that doesn't have a cable (unlike the adapter shown in a slide during the review) that will go from the jack to a 1/8" plug?

How does the Nokia Surge handle Java?

Symbian is the most popular smartphone operating system in the world. It is open-source and does true multitasking from what I understand. Why isn't there more of it i the United States? Is device availability an issue?

Regarding the LG Chocolate phone:
Patrick returned it after three days, but the Chocolate 3 is by far the best phone for a high school or college kid like myself. There is no internet or data plan, so its super cheap. It also has really good media controls, a standard headphone jack, and the Chocolate 3 has a built in FM transmitter for the car. Its a cheap phone with a good mp3 player that you will need a microSD memory card for, but it is WAY cheaper than a Blackberry, iphone, or separate Zune or ipod.

In ep 102 Patrick Norton said that Nokia and other great phones(out side US) get their ass kicked by the phones in USA, but that's not the case, people in USA didn't have a chance to use all the phones that are available worldwide, which people out side of USA does. In US only a few types of Nokia and other phones are available.

So before saying any statements like this please say the situation in US

I've never used the freezer method so I can't say anything about whether or not it works. But I have, and regularly it seems, use the "smack the drive on the desk" method for sticktion or other reasons the drive motor won't initially spin up. Whapping the side of the computer case with the fist also works for that. Three Stooges School of Computer Repair

Yowza sounded interesting, and so did the new Nokia phone. Too bad they're both on a piece of cow dung network like AT&T.

I had a Chocolate, and it really is a good phone. Only reason I got rid of it is I started texting more and wanted something with a qwerty keyboard.

All of the FastStone utilities are good, not just Image Resizer. If anyone takes away my Image Viewer I'll definitely go postal on 'em.

As for the locked up hard drive, I have used the twist the wrist method first before going rambo on a drive. Besides most hd makers have software that comes in the box that will help you recover a drive by moving bad sectors and allow the drive to be bootable or at least readable more often than not. You did not chunk that cd did you?

With some of the new Arm based cpu's coming out will not even need a fan. The old Via cpus could also almost run without a fan also.

Yowza reminds me of the payola days of radio.

Don't use a cell phone, but I do use voip.

Using green drives in a raid is like using street tires on a race car,,,,,,,

Yes, its just product placements. Probably will work well, but after listening to the segment, I wanted a shower.

I don't mind the highlights. woah, that sizziling Heat touch on her side was cheesy! I mean seriously cheesy. Even more cheesy than the worst "Tekzilla starts Nao" iterations by Patrick. Wonder if the hair is making her more kinky, or if its just a biproduct of of her new found kinkiness(thats a real word).

something was missing from this episode. maybe its clips from outside, real clips not booring people.

Spinrite is bad. Nobody should ever use it regardless of their operating system. Even one of the original developers says it is bad but one of them is still flogging it without a conscience because it's free money to him.

The thermals of Intel chips vary wildly between models. Whoever asked that question should look up their processor on http://processorfinder.intel.com/ to find the correct temperature for theirs. In my experience, all Core 2 Duos throttle themselves at 85'C and turn off a little higher than that. 100+ (the temperature given in the episode) would definitely melt it. I have had a Merom (Core 2 Duo Mobile 65nm) melt once because it was consistently overheating and shutting down and the damage all adds up.

When I was about 8 (probably running MSDOS but possibly Windows 3.1) I used to just plain threaten my computer and I found that worked pretty well too.

jeez. smacking it on the desk. heh, that should definitely help it

davmoo, that reminds me of an old computer of mine
back in the day when i had an NEC pc, and it was running Winders ME. that stupid OS made me abuse my computer, given I had anger issues back then. every day when it would freeze up on me/bsod or somin, i would start abusing the box. i would start off by punching it on the side, and i'd even go as far as body slamming the box sometimes. so i attest to your suggested methods ;)

Actually, yeah, it does. It gives the disks just enough momentum to break the sticktion of the heads or other defective component(s) that are holding it in place, and allows the bad drive to spin up properly. Since the alternative is the drive does not spin up and the data thus becomes completely unreadable, I don't see a problem here. Smack the drive, get it spinning, and read the data off to a non-defective drive. When a company is risking data loss from a defective drive and they ignored the advice to back up their data (and they all ignore it until the first time they lose data), they don't care whether or not your fix is graceful. All they care about is did you recover the data.

That depends if you use the RAID for safety or for speed.

RAID is not backup. It provides very little, if any, safety. You want safety, do a backup.

...it got better in the end .. thankfully ..

Please please please stop the product placements..
You have the ads...isnt that enough?
why not get apple as a sponsor .. and some Hero actor . .then leave the shows time for the show.

...otherwise .. who cares about yet another app..doing stuff that existed 6 years ago, but failed?

...freezing the harddrive have never worked for me...its an old trick from the 80's ...and in desperate times when the simple bang approce didnt work either, ive tried it in diffrent occation ... never worked what so ever.

I never claimed RAID was backup .. but you can use it for safety anyway..
...a drive can fail .. you dont have to copy a backup..just continue to run, replace the drive and you loose no server up time, rendering time...or what ever you are into.

RAID can offer safety, it just depends on how you define it.

sure your data is still in one place so if you house burns down there is no safety in that.
...and if lightning tells your UPS to fuck of and jumps the current anyway and fries you drives and controller ..no safety there. . (yes that can happen in a home if its a direct hit .. )

but if a drive fails .. there is safety in that . you dont loose any data. and it can save time and money not having to deal with restoring a backup. just hotswapping the drive for a new.

...of course you still have to do backups..

a seatbelt does not prevent you for getting damaged in a carcrash, but it could save your life, leaving you with a broken arm.
But if you drive of a cliff into the ocean ..the seatbelt does not help much.

That doesnt meen the seatbelt cant provide safety. :O)

Ugh... I can't stand it.

First, I still say Spinrite, even if you have to yank the drive out of your Mac and shove it into a PC (hint: most of them are IDE or SATA drives, it's just Mac Partitioning) or BootCamp off of a FireWire drive to a SYSLINUX-booting Linux partition (because SYSLINUX can run MEMDISK and boot an image of Spinrite -- done it before).

Why? Because if the drive's stuck, Spinrite will tell you. If the drive's SMART firmware is flagged that it's dying, Spinrite will tell you. If the drive's overheating, Spinrite will stop, tell you, and let the drive cool off before continuing.

There is one downside, though. Spinrite is only for if the drive is acting flaky and can't read the sectors on the drive, but otherwize the mechanism is good. The developer, Steve Gibson of Gibson Research Corp, tells you there's a limit that software can do. If it turns out the heads are stuck, and it tells you, or your drive's knocking, you need to send your drive out to get it rebuilt.

How do I know this? Steve tells you that as he hosts the Security Now podcast (http://grc.com/securitynow) with Leo Laporte, and invites comments both via his form or via his sole Usenet server (read: forums before there was forums -- grab Thunderbird to read 'em). So if you got problems with Spinrite, drop Steve a note, so he can improve Spinrite 6 into Spinrite 7... after he codes up CryptoLink.

Jeez, I didn't think it was "product placement" or an ad! He didn't pay us to be on the show. I thought it would be interesting to have someone come on and talk about their experience developing an app, and what goes into it. Also, he's on freaking Heroes, which I thought our geek audience would appreciate or at least get a kick out of.

Sorry if you didn't find the interview interesting or worthwhile.

Any chance you could do an interview in the future with the folks who did the actual coding? I thought the interview with Greg was good (although I'm not a Heros fan), but a lot of his answers to your questions were words to the effect of "the other guys did that".

Really, I'd love to see real tech on Tekzilla. I have no clue who this celebrity was, I don't watch network/cable TV. There may be a chance it really invented it, he seemed pumped up on the business issues of the startup. But if you strip out the self promotion in the piece, there wasn't much tech there.

Sure, an Apple iPhone can do nearly anything, its a computer after all. But it can only do what AT&T and Apple let it do. I wish there was competition for it, (Yo, Google, get some Android phones out in the market) but since it costs nearly $2400 to buy (try getting one without a two year contract) I don't need another marketing guy telling me about value propositions.

I like you guys and your show but I got to tell ya. The last show was not what I was hoping for. I hate to jump on the ban wagon but it seemed like an infomercial for Greg's app at times. I agree with someone else here that would like to heard for the developer and not just the promoter.
Just to balance things out a little, I'll say that the segment on green drive was good and is the type of stuff I keep coming back for. Oh, here's an idea, how about a segment every now and then devoted to a distro of linux.
