Losing music on iPhone after FW upgrade.

I manually manage the music on my iPhone since my iTunes library is larger then the free space on my iPhone....But every time I upgrade the firmware I have to go back through my music library and manually add each album again. Its just a pain spending time making a nice library on the phone and then having to try and remember exactly what all albums I previously had on the phone. Is there a easier way to do this?

I have a playlist made called 'iPhone songs.' I just throw all the songs I want in there and tell iTunes to sync that. I've had it clear my music a few times, but its as easy as checking a checkbox to put them back.
