I am looking to get a macbook sometime next spring. Will I see much of a performance difference if I get the low end white macbook w/ 1GB of ram vs. the mid range macbook standard configuration. It will be using for general computing most but aslo some audio recording and video editing. '

You will want the highest end Macbook you can afford, or be willing to put up with the time taken to perform the task on a lower end machine.

The low end Macbooks are great for someone that wants to listen to music, watch a video, edit a paper, surf the web - the stuff I'd guess 80% of Macusers do ... but once you start getting into heavy duty photoshopping, or video editting you will appreciate the faster CPU and increased RAM.

If you want to use Final Cut Pro (video editing) you will need a MacBook Pro.

Look at the System Requirements for Final Cut Pro (http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/specs.html).

AGP Quartz Extreme or PCI Express graphics card (Final Cut Studio is not supported on systems using the Intel Extreme Graphics 950 GMA)

MacBook's use the Intel Extreme Graphics chips, which is not supported with Final Cut Pro.

Thats true, but I would guess that most of his needs would be met by iLife (iDVD app) - which is supported by Macbooks.

Final Cut is pretty heavy duty for the casual video creator.

Very true. I just wanted to make sure that he was aware that Final Cut Pro wouldn't run on a standard MacBook.

What about the fact that you don't get the super drive with the low end model? You only get a DVD/CD-RW, you don't get the Dual Layer DVD burner, and increased hard drive space (you are dealing with videos, and they take up A LOT of space). Since there isn't much of a price difference at all (less than 200 bucks, when you include the upgrade to a 1 gb ram) go for the mid range macbook for sure.

Indeed! I would definatley save up the extra cash and get everything you want in a laptop, because laptops aren't easy to upgrade. You can always upgrade the RAM, but I would definatley get the super-drive and a large HDD.

When I said video editing originally, I meant the casual home movie once or twice a month

iDVD and iMovie HD will do all that just fine on a MacBook.

But like I said earlier, definatley get the super-drive model, and as large a HDD as you can afford.

I am getting the Black Macbook with 2 gbs of RAM as soon as the new OSX Leopard is released. I hope they were right on MacBreak Weekly when they said they think they are releasing it at Macworld.

Dude, if they release a flash based 12 inch macbook I will shit my pants and post the pictures for everyone to see. And that's for two reasons:
1) I don't think it will happen, and
2) I would be really happy if it did.
