Any of you guys upgrade to Snow Leopard yet? I haven't yet, but I used it. I like it, though I understand why it was only $30 (consumers could care less about the behind the scenes enhancements). The various enhancements they made are really nice though.

[quote]You know what's funny? You don't hear conservatives complain about the bailouts Reagan did during the savings and loan crisis.

I guess it's only SOCIALISM when a democrat does it. [/qoute]

Most Republicans did not want the bailout. You can always tell a Democrat, as they always have there hand out.

Huh? What the hell are you talking about? He asked about Snow Leopard.

I've got a copy on order, I'll be installing it next week on my office Mac.

The reviews I've seen are all positive, and at that price there's no reason NOT to update unless it breaks some third party app you must have.

That's in my sig moron. Take it to the politics forum.

I'm going to wait a little bit to give them time to work out any potential bugs but I do plan on upgrading.

I'll be "trading" Apple for it.
I'll give them 120 bucks to simply open my iMac Case and reseat my eSATA cable, and they'll let me use the 30 buck disc to upgrade from Tiger, instead of spending 170 bucks to do it "properly" in their "bundle" with other software I don't want or need.

Deal? Deal.

Hypocrite.

A true republican would pay for the software and not rely on charity computers.

So, as a Linux user I guess you are quite happy to put your hand out for the free stuff? Does that make you a Democrat or (gasp) Socialist??

But, as Phatlip pointed out, that is in his sig file. Take it to the politics forum.

I'm not agreeing with anything here. But damn tokenuser, are you sure your name shouldn't be tokenmod? You are pathetic.

How about you take your simple minded wannabe cranky moods to the linux forum? Or do you want to go and post a 'digg' in the Diggnation forum about me?

If that was your attempt at modding you should fuck off. If you want to be a snide little shit do it without trying to push your weight around.

Let us see how many rules you claim I broke here?

I'm usually up for political debate, but kids, this ain't the place. Take it where it belongs...and get off my lawn :)

So far I've not heard anything massively disastrous about Snow Leopard. Hopefully they are past things like in Leopard where in the initial release the firewall was not turned on even when you turned it on and stuff like that.

Well, it IS only $30 so it's hard to bitch that much. I'm surprised Leo isn't impressed though. Being a tech guy, I thought he would appreciate all the behind the scenes changes.

He did say he'd be pissed if it was more than 30, but on macbreak this week he agreed with Ihnatko about why the underlying tech was awesome, So I think he is kinda ambivilent.

I think a lot of the problem is people were expecting some massive new OS, not what basically amounts to a big service pack. The fact that its on sale at Best Buy for $25 ($43.99 for the 5-license family pack) should tell people its not a major upgrade.

Of course, Apple could be just pricing it cheap to make up for how they have already bent all their customers over the computer desk on the price of the hardware...

IDK, I don't think charity and socialism are the same thing. Charity is done by individuals out of their own free will; socialism is the government giving stuff away for free --- against the will of a subset of the taxpayers.

Leo seems rather anti-Apple lately. Leo has been making some Mussolini comparisons to Apple. He has mentioned that using the iphone is like living in Mussolini's Italy.

Heard that on MacBreak, or one of his shows. I think he's just disapointed.

A service pack? They did make some pretty major changes, it's just you can't see most of them.

Further supporting 64 bit, Grand Central, OpenGL, Finder re-write etc.

I've tried several times to upgrade my Macbook Pro to Snow Leopard but the last 2 times its crashed during install. I've yet to see anything online about similar problems so I'll just wait until I'm done with my current projects and do a clean install.

Still very interested to play around with all the performance enhancements.

Let's also not forget, removing support for non-Intel Macs. Although it is a bit more than just a service pack (IMO, not that much), I'd also say that for the average end user even $30 is a stretch. Yea, they might notice some performance improvements, but overall it's $30 for the same thing they already had.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I like the changes they made to Stacks, though I feel like it should have worked like that from the start. I discovered you can "edit" video in the new Quicktime today though. The UI looks very similar to that on the iPhone (when trimming video clips that is). Kind of cool.

Thank you Bill O'Reilly Jr. Way to take it out of context. What Leo said was that Mussolini's Italy was fascist, but "the trains ran on time." In correlation to Apple, their products are expensive, their customer service sucks, and their public relations suck, but at least their products look good and work. Do you get it now, or do I have to spell it out in your Alpha-bits?

Leo Laporte: But, using the iPhone is kind of like living in Mussolini’s Italy.
Peter Rojas: Trains run on time.
Leo Laporte: The trains run on time and there is some bad stuff going on.
Peter Rojas: You know what happened to Mussolini?
Leo Laporte: I know.
Peter Rojas: They hung him upside down in the square and kicked him in the head.

I doubt that comparing anything to Mussolini's Italy is going to be a positive comparison by any stretch of the imagination. If you think a fascist comparison is not being made --- that is your business. I'll let Leo and his friends speak for themselves.

WOW, there are folks so bored with their lives they type up podcast transcripts and put them on Wikis? God, I hope they get paid for that. So they can pay for the broadband in their mothers basements.

In this economy you got to do what you can to make a buck :D. And yea, Pods In Print looks like a business, so they would get paid.

I'm definitely going to have to disagree with you on the customer service. Apple is pretty well known for having excellent customer service.

Doesn't work with my main reason for needing to tolerate Apple hardware.

I kind of suspected it, but the custom-developed app suite that I use doesn't work under SL. Fortunately as it happens, the last Apple for a while I purchased was shipped after the SL release, but clearly prepped before.

Making it compatible isn't an option at the moment: The devs recently liquidated their company and in doing so tore up my development / support contract (they want to start over again / extract more money from me, and that just ain't happening).

Looks like I'll be running Leopard for quite a while, although I might update a couple of my home Macs to SL. I've phased out all my Tiger-era stuff, running a mix of Harpertown/Nehalem Crap Pros & Xserves, an all-'09 Crapbook Air/Pro lineup, as well as enough spares to keep me running until 2012. And hopefully by the end of that period I'll have ended my Apple dependency - for work at least.
