I love the little 'trick' card games.. where they feel like they have the upper hand, but in reality you do. Much better than the ones where they feel that there is obviously something not in their favor... such as the one shown long ago where you have specific cards in a small deck, and whomever gets the 'marked card' so to speak.. will always lose

on the second bet, if you pull out 4 tens and an ace, and they decide to pull out all 4 of either J's Q's or K's and an ace to beat you with a higher 4 of a kind.....how are you gonna discard to get your royal??????

A straight flush of any kind will beat their four of a kind, then. It doesn't have to be royal. If they go low, you whip them by going high. If they go high, you can do a lower straight flush.

I love this one. I find this one quite interesting.
I'm gonna try to pull this one on my friends next time we play poker.

I thought that you were limited to three cards (in which case that wouldn't work) but I was apparently wrong, it's just a common house rule according to Wikipedia.
In any case, the scam is really to allow yourself to draw your cards after the guy did, even though you picked your cards first.
BB picks 10-10-10-10-A.
The guy picks K-K-K-K-A and says he doesn't want to change anything.
BB withdraws 10-10-10-A for 8-9-J-Q to make a straight flush.
The guy should be able to draw then, not before BB and get a royal flush himself and beat BB. If he had started with straight flush like in the video, BB could get a royal flush and the guy could then change his cards for a royal flush as well.
Am I missing something?
Tim
PS: I know it's not a real game, and that the goal is to social-engineer yourself into bending the rules :)

By poker rules, you can draw as many cards as you like... all 5 if you want.
Remember, the cards you trade in are gone. They don't go back into the deck. Your friend can't get them.
If you pick 10,10,10,10,A, and your friend picks K,K,K,K,A, trade your cards to get Q,J,10,9,8 suited. Your friend can't get a 10 (since yours are discarded), so the best they could make is 9,8,7,6,5. You win by having the higher straight flush, even if though you don't get a royal flush.
If they take all the queens, you get J,10,9,8,7. Jacks, you get 10,9,8,7,6. No matter, what, they can't get a 10, so you'll always have the higher straight flush. If they do anything else, you get a royal flush.
When you take the 10's, the best they can get is 9,8,7,6,5.

Oh ok. I didn't think about that… Now I see why it's a good trick :)
Thanks for the explanation!

yes.. it wouldnt work if didnt take all 4 10s 1st and an A... then they cant get a royal flush. I cant wait to use this one...
except 1 "established" (common) rule on 5 card Draw is that U cant draw 4 cards unless holding an A. Might take some finesse to talk way outta same/similar 5 card "rules"
Very nice.
BTW... I'm playing NL Holdem online right now as I'm typing.
I guess my Job Title is "Professional Gambler"... since my only income (other than disability) is the 30 cents I might win on my dime entry into a tournament. :)
More Poker/card related tricks.. I've started carrying a deck of cards w/ me... (Tho its a deck w/ a hole punched thru the middle because... a "friend of a friend" worked for Atlantic City's Tropicana Casino.... I have maybe 30 decks of cards w/ a hole punched thru them

I already performed this trick on three of my friends, which really pissed them off because I kept on winning, during a game of poker at school.
The only thing that ruined it for is that my teacher was watching and wrecked it for me by telling the others what I was doing!

I got three drinks out of this one last night!
The first two were as BB demonstrated. He went for 4 kings to beat my 4 tens. I drew for a straight flush, and when he went looking for his royal flush, the 10's were nowhere to be found. My other buddies were howling at this point.
Then things got interesting.
Not to be dismayed, he decided he could beat me at this game. Not tie, beat. Another beer was bet, but he wanted to go first. He grabbed AAAAK. I grabbed QQQQK.
Sucker.

Perhaps I'm stuck on the semantics of the proposition. If the rules state:
"...you pull out whatever cards you want and you still couldn't beat me."
Could that include cards from the other person's hand?

I think we make it pretty clear that we're playing by regular draw poker rules, with the only difference being that we pick our own starting cards from the face-up deck. And since it's regular rules, you can't take any discarded cards.

I've actually used this one before. It's also described in a great book by Harry Anderson (Harry the Hat from Cheers; the judge on Night Court) called, I believe, "Games You Can't Lose"

That's exactly what happened to me both times I tried this. It never even occured to them to go for a straight flush, 4Ks beats 4 10s, there's no way to make a straight after discarding 3 cards...

Are you not allowed to discard 4 cards? If you take four 10s and an Ace, and they take four Kings and an Ace, you can still win by discarding four cards.
Example:
You: 10 10 10 10 A
Them: K K K K A
You discard all but one 10, pick up 8 9 J Q of same suit to get a straight flush. 8, 9, 10, J, Q
No matter what they discard, they can't get a higher flush than you because all other 10s are buried in the discard pile. Even if they keep King and Ace of same suit, they can only go as low as the Jack, which is only a four-card straight. Highest straight flush they can get is 9, 8, 7, 6, 5. Right?
