Hi All,

I have recently been studying QoS and was wondering if someone could clear up my confusion.

Initially I thought that QoS was alive and kicking on the net today and that when I use Skype the QoS was in full swing ensuring my voice packets were a priority...

However, after some well needed research I have found this is not the case. And QoS would only really be in place on a private network where the network admin has set the QoS up for the network and any calls leaving that network would have their QoS priorities ignored once another network has been reached.

So I was wondering;

If what I have written above is correct
and
Is it possible to have a application which uses QoS over the public internet?

Cheers

QoS is done by each router, no it isn't possible for you to control your ISP's routers, at least not legally.

If you configure your personal router to ensure prioritised packets are the first out of your connection when it receives them, it will have grater chance of been processed first by the ISPs routers.

Thanks Boris,

So if I get my router to prioritise its down to each of the ISP's routers discretion, if they want to honour the priority they can and if they dont want to they wont.

Not quite like that. If you tell your router to make skype traffic (for example) 'leave' as fast as possible, your ISPs routers won't know that is actually happening. Traffic doesn't have a priority tied to it, each router has it's own priorities.
